Mechanica Cellorum blends two worlds in a single phrase:
Mechanica – the machine, the engineered, the AI-driven element of the project.
Cellorum – Latin genitive plural of cello (literally “of the cellos”), giving it the gravitas of old-world classical language.
Together it can be read as “The Machinery of the Cellos” or “Machine of the Cellos,” mirroring a hybrid album where centuries-old wooden instruments are pushed from Baroque counterpoint through Romantic lyricism to Apocalyptica-style metal, all with an AI-assisted edge. It carries both the antique dignity of Latin and the industrial/futurist bite of “Mechanica.” 

Since I started playing the cello I have been interested in seeing how far the boundaries can be stretched, and began to experiment with rock music at an early age. Today I play classical and all kinds of other music on traditional cellos and electric instruments. I love the instrument - you can put so much of yourself into it, and it can be so atmospheric.

With my experimentation with AI, I wanted to stretch the boundaries into new areas to see what could be done. I have seen various cellists (eg Matthew Barley) using technology in live classical performances with experimental music and thought that it would be interesting to see what could be done here. 

I have gone into the musical structures of the Bach Cello Suites - a wonderful and challenging world of music for the classical cellist, and have reimagined what a further suite might sound like. I have also gone further with 2, 3 and 4 cellos, merged with drums and electric guitars. The result is an album which contains the wide variety of cello playing that interests me.
