Something about Vic Spencer's music makes you want to punch someone in the mouth. Seems like he's speaking to all of us because we know someone like this. He's bold enough to express it on Red Eye.

"I named it Red Eye because I had looked at my face in the Red Eye (a Chicago-based newspaper, free to the public) paper with Chance the Rapper and I was wasn't dead. I used to think being in the newspaper, if you are black, you in there because you're dead or something bad happened where my mugshot is the headline" Spencer says. "I was in the paper because I was heading to SXSW to do a show with King Louie & Chance and that year we were all over the headlines. But, I'm a hardcore rapper, you feel me?"

Red Eye is for the Red Button Series: Part 2 and serves as an appetizer for what's in store for Spencer in 2015. He's scheduled to drop an album produced entirely with Doc da Mindbenda called Modern Masters, which is curated/presented by the well-known artist Will Prince. I personally can't wait for that. Nasty shit, but funny and informative. Vic Spencer let loose another hot one off the grill entitled Pork Chops today for the Red Button Series. Produced by Stay Humble ENT rapper Tony Stanza, this is Vic on speaking to the gutter side of Chicago hip-hop

"I get criticized for rapping", Vic says. "It's a big ass gap between bullshit records and Vic Spencer records. I'm coming for that gap and I don't feel like I need to do radio or sellout to fill that gap! I feel like if I wasn't liked as a MC, we would hear more jokes about my raps than anything because I confidently boast about my music. But nobody says shit. It's the vision of hearing someone say 'I don't eat pork' but lowkey they smacking on some barbecue cracklings. People don't rock with the music publicly but soon when they see me in the street ask me 'how is your music going?' It's crazy."

A collective of Hip-Hop & Soul musicians who came together in the late 90s, and thrived as a unit through the early 00s, the Soulquarians represent the continuation of a thread beginning with artists like Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Aretha Franklin. One that extends up to artists from today's generation like The Internet, Kaytranada, Dreamville, & TDE.

I recently DJed an event where the theme was All-Soulquarian. And the response to the just the theme alone was amazing. We all know Dilla changed our lives, but what about the others? Questlove has touched more modern mainstream and underground music than most know about. And Mos Def's guest appearance listing is pages and pages long.

I didn't record my set that night, because I knew the wormhole that was about to open. There are volumes and volumes of this waiting to be made! So for this installment, I tried to stay away from doing an all-hits mix and instead went for deeper cuts and remixes along with some fan favs. If you see any glaring omissions, take it all in stride friends. We'll get to more on Volume 2...
