This track was Commissioned by ‘Waywords and Meansigns’ an ambitious and forward looking project to set Joyce's seminal and experimental novel to music. Over Seventeen international artists and musicians, each assigned to render a chapter took part.

For my chapter, I recorded the reading on a portable recorder as quickly and naturally as I could, enjoying the flow and musicality of Joyce's text. I only recorded second takes for when I stumbled too much on a section, and felt fine about keeping in the odd fluffed line. I used this reading as a template and sonic palimpsest for the sound collage I layered on top - it seemed in keeping with the idea of The Wake. The density built up slowly, some later sounds almost obliterating others, although I tried to keep the reading in the foreground throughout. I stopped working on it when my deadline was up, but felt I could have gone on adding to the recording almost indefinitely.

Neil Campbell has been active on the lunatic fringe of the UK's underground music scene since at least 1979. In that time he has performed and recorded widely as solo performer, ad hoc collaborator with people like Richard Youngs, John Clyde-Evans and Matthew Bower, and core member of groups such as Vibracathedral Orchestra, A Band and Astral Social Club. Writers have described him variously as "a one-man subculture", a "grandfather figure" with "hallucinogenically inclined pallet". Neil shares his birthday with Grace Jones, Malcolm X, Ho Chi Minh, Pol Pot and Joey Ramone - LOOKOUT!
