Little River was a late addition to the album. It was written in just about a day, recorded over the course of four days, and mixed & mastered over the course of about a week. This was one of the fastest I've ever thrown a song together, and it gives me hope- I'm actually feeling myself getting better at this.

The song is about a river, but it's more than that. It's about all of us, and this dreary environment we've created for ourselves, and how it feels like no one is even trying to right the ship. It's not the deepest metaphor, I imagine most people will be able to pick that up on the first listen if they're really tuned into the words. 

This is going to be the third song on the album. So far, the plan is to release half the album as singles and then release the second half of the album all at once. The goal is to gain a bit of traction with each release and maybe by the end of this I actually have some fans. 7 decades of pop music, created in a new style of the 2020's: synth ska. 

Sad Songs With Happy Endings, which came out on July 4th of this year, was pop ska- ska with pop influence. This includes synth, but it also includes skanking guitars. This is not synth ska.

Jubilee, our first album, was ska pop- pop with ska influence. But on that album were a few songs that took it a step further, and actually used synths to play the classic ska offbeat rhythm. This is synth ska.

I only speak with such authority on this distinction because as of today, the only releases on Bandcamp tagged as Synth Ska came from Atlas & Oracle. I'm not kidding, check it out: https://bandcamp.com/tag/synth-ska

We honestly don't know if there's demand for this kind of music (though the success of Walls Come Crashing may say something), but we have a lot of fun making it. This one has been in the works for a long time- initial recording sessions kicked off about 14 months ago. 

A lot has happened during that time. I feel like we could all use some songs that just sound pretty.

Frightened

December is upon us, and already Christmas is fast approaching. Me and my producer were bouncing this track back and forth for the last few days, and it finally feels like it's in a place where I can share it. Of course, there's always going to be a few last things I wish I could change. That's life.

It's going to be about 5 days before I can post this track to Spotify and the rest. Apple Music might be a bit quicker. Still, it sucks that I won't be getting this out until 2 weeks before Christmas. Ideally I would have had it done last week, but the mix always takes a bit to get just right, and I didn't even get the idea until the week before. It's like that sometimes- preparation is key, but so often the idea only comes once the season is upon us. That's life, too.

Time is funny. While the months have felt like years, the days pass by quickly. Over these waves, progress is made or lost by the choices we make in the moment. I've been doing well. I'm choosing productivity more often. Every day I'm trying to get a little better, a little further towards my goals. Sometimes it feels a little easier, but sometimes it's not. That's life, as far as I can tell, stripped down to its barest essentials.

Quarantine Christmas

A Little Comfort, the first song off my upcoming debut album, released today. It's a simple song, straight from the heart- I hope you'll consider giving it a listen 😊

This was written at the beginning of quarantine. I was living a thousand miles away from my love, and all I wanted to do was escape and find a little place for us to be together. Months later, we've found that little place, where we have been weathering the storm together. I hope you find that place as well.

I sat on the intro to this song for a long time, when suddenly the verse structure came to me in a flash of creativity. From there, the verse just laid itself out before me, and when I reached the chorus again I knew what I wanted to say: I hope you'll find a little comfort here.
