On July 13th, 2021, one of my all-time favourite labels, named after its inception date, 130701 celebrated its 20th birthday. What can I say about its output, its delicate curation, and its monumental impact on our lives? Just look at the roster of its artists, many of which are showcased in this exclusive mix put together by Dave Howell, and you will immediately be swept away in the beautiful torrent of music that has been so extraordinary comforting in the last two decades. I would even proclaim that because of this imprint, on which many of today’s biggest names made their debut, the world is a different place, a richer place, and definitely better. Just look at HC’s coverage of its releases – I think I wrote about every single one! There is so much more praise which I would like to publish, but Dave has also written a little bit about this special mix, and so I’d like to give him the stage for a moment. A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, play out and what they listen to.


"This particular mix blends together many of the influences that follow me around in my every day work. Often the biggest inspiration lies in very basic harmonic structures or textures that’s why i combined some of my favourite ambient pieces with a number of, partially binaural, field recordings i took in the black forest last year. I’d love this to be an inspiration and relaxation tool that sparks ideas in good and bad times alike" - Ben Lukas Boysen

Ben Lukas Boysen has made a career out of transforming unusual sounds into compelling music. His first electronic compositions at 18 were experiments with samplers and tape loops leading to an album in 2003 and the subsequent foundation of his own Berlin studio. Since, he has produced multiple albums (many under the alias HECQ), and led numerous workshops on composition and sound aesthetics, as well as creating custom sound design for films, commercials, video games and installations. Boysen’s first film score for „Restive" premiered in 2011, followed by his debut album under his own name in 2013, and the award-winning score for the Sony Playstation game, Everything, in 2016 as well as Amazon series „BEAT“ in 2018 and the score for the  film adaptation of best seller „The Collini Case“ in 2019.

Mesh Series 06: Ben Lukas Boysen

Glåsbird is an anonymous composer whose albums are the score to imaginary films.
The artist is building a series of works about various geographical locations as well as providing music for film, sound design and remixes.
Their sound contains evident influences from modern classical and ambient music genres and this mix for Deep Breakfast is an epic two hour journey through modern classical composition.
The artwork is provided by Aldona Pivoriene and was taken at the location for the new Glåsbird album out now on the wonderful Whitelabrecs: https://whitelabrecs.bandcamp.com/album/norskfj-r-r
The undulating landscape in the image is one of clear beauty and depicts the traditional instruments used throughout this mix. Whereas the electricity pylons that run through the valley represents the subtle electronic techniques used in many of the selections.

New show by Giraffe Tapes is kicking in on Mutant Radio! In the first episode the guest is Hidekazu Imashige, aka Gallery Six, an artist and composer who is based in Miyoshi Hiroshima, Japan. His new album called "The Waves Wiped Memory Away" was released on "Giraffe Tapes" label. Gallery Six has been making sound sketches, mixing drone sounds mainly created from synthesizer and materials field-recorded when he goes wherever his heart leads.
