Both the longest and most comprehensive mix I have edited together yet, "5,000 Fathoms" compiles over 40 unique ambient artists into a 90 minute underwater journey. The sounds of a harbor can be heard as you set out on a small boat and soon plunge overboard. The concept continues from there but I'll leave that for you to discover. Throughout the journey, found underwater sounds are interwoven, including actual recordings of humpback whales (not mine, referenced below) and the constant manipulation of water sounds effects (scuba breathing). Each track was specifically chosen that both worked within an ambient anthology context, as well as a nautical theme ("Deep Blue Day", "By the Harbor") or a feeling of being isolated deep underwater (Basinski, Popnoname). Plug in your headphones and enjoy.

It's been long over due but we were finally able to get Carmack one on one. He is definitely one of the most forward thinking artists of the new generation. If you produce then there is a good chance that you know who Carmack is. He has inspired many all over the world and has pretty much created his own genre of sound. This guy has been a big part of Soulection's growth and history and it felt good to finally sit down with my bro to talk about his growth and current inspirations. We talked about how his move to L.A. changed his life, how he feels about other producers who create music that sounds like his, his relationship with drugs and why he calls his music drugs, when we can expect the next album, and much more.

Loscil Tribute Live Mixed by Fingers in the Noise

On this mix, originally appearing on Headphone Commute podcast in May of 2017, we celebrate some of the pioneers of early electronic ambient music, with the help of a long-time contributor, Fingers in the Noise. Here are all of the first explorations into the then unnamed genre, sometimes referred to as avant-garde, new-music, or simply electronic music. Pictured for the cover art of this mix is Laurie Spiegel, an American composer, who, while working in Bell Laboratories in the early 70s, composed with analog synthesizers using interactive software she wrote herself. Some of this music is hard to come by, with the early experiments a bit difficult to digest, so I thank Laurent Bisch for his wonderful selection of tracks for this very special tribute.

A curated series where we commission artists to make an hour long mix of whatever inspires them to experiment, produce, play out and what they listen to.

Often the biggest inspiration lies in very basic harmonic structures or textures that’s why i combined some of my favourite ambient pieces with a number of, partially binaural, field recordings i took in the black forest last year. Ben Lukas Boysen has made a career out of transforming unusual sounds into compelling music. His first electronic compositions at 18 were experiments with samplers and tape loops leading to an album in 2003 and the subsequent foundation of his own Berlin studio. Since, he has produced multiple albums (many under the alias HECQ), and led numerous workshops on composition and sound aesthetics, as well as creating custom sound design for films, commercials, video games and installations. Boysen’s first film score for „Restive" premiered in 2011, followed by his debut album under his own name in 2013, and the award-winning score for the Sony Playstation game, Everything, in 2016 as well as Amazon series „BEAT“ in 2018 and the score for the  film adaptation of best seller „The Collini Case“ in 2019.
