Renegade the Dream

January 2016, Astro & the Intergalactic Space Monks signed to Mausay Records, and immediately caught jazz lovers’attention with their quirky perfomances and resound fusion of traditional jazz genres, including swing,  smooth jazz, funk, latin, sounds of the world, RnB, Blues, and more intense sounds like discotheque, psychedelic rock and grunge. Priding themselves on musical versatility and pure, raw performance; it is no wonder that the band is speedily on its way to the top. Already having opened for big South African acts like The Sextons and a few other well known projects, the band is set to debut its six-song EP, “Sounds of a Spectrum”in the 3rd quarter of 2016. ‘Sounds of a Spectrum’ is the 6 track first effort from Astro & the Intergalactic Space Monks, and features heavy genius in the fusion of multiple genres, ranging from discotheque, smooth jazz, acoustic jazz, and disco-funk to acid jazz, grunge, and blues.The mastery of the traditional ability for jazz music improvisation and a keen, resonant understanding of jazz time and key signatures allows the band to pull off some incredible feats on their debut EP, weaving a story that could only ever be told in the form of jazz fusion, and fusing genres and time signatures with astounding ease, as heard on “28th Avenue”, a disco-funk song that fuses an odd time signature,  (7/4) with common time( 4/4), for a pounding and groovy smash with tight fills, persistent percussion, a gospel organ, crunchy guitar leads. The vocals are light and fun in the odd verses, and burst into the chorus of a feel-good song with meaningful lyrics and powerful melismas and clean belts. The bassline seems to encompass all that, and make it a song you will be jamming out to for a while.
