Ensemble Entendu is the collaborative project of Astro Nautico co-founder and co-owner Sam O.B. (f.k.a. Obey City) and label artist Photay. 

Since July 2014, inspired by back-to-back deejay sets at Astro Nautico parties and around New York, O.B. and Photay have been linking their individual production styles between Brooklyn studios in order to create a form dance music that centralizes the timeless power of the drum. 

With a track entitled ‘Cause ‘N’ Effect,’ the oldest (c. 2014) collected on the Ensemble’s debut release Selected Rhythm Works, Vol. 1, the duo raises the question: who in this collaboration is causing what effect on whom? There are rhythmic and melodic idiosyncrasies of both artists present on each track. Footprints stepping in footprints. And beyond or behind the artists are the sound signatures of house music, new jack, African polyrhythm, dub reggae, ‘80s prog (roto toms!), P-funk, dancehall, and much more. This flurry of styles stitches a Trans-Atlantic tapestry of drumming across generations and seas, with a center nowhere but the dance floor. 

Ensemble Entendu’s debut is sampling notions of library music and rhythm tracks. The duo’s name refers to deju entendu, the psychic phenomenon that occurs when you hear something you think you’ve heard before, even though the sound may be being heard for the first time. Selected Rhythm Works, Vol. 1 (a nominal reference to Aphex Twin) loosens the threads of connection between then and now and tomorrow, allowing listeners to weave their own journeys in historical time through body movement.

Nature documentaries of the 1970s used synthesizer music to score messages about species endangerment and environmental disaster prevention. Electronic instrumentation was in itself an ominous warning of the reckless advancement of technology and an effort to audition a utopian harmony between people and machines and nature. 

Photay’s debut full-length ​Onism​ inherits the same historical tension in an age of climate change and social media addiction. It is also a reflection of personal conditions, a meditation on place, community, and its creator’s own embodied history. The word ‘onism,’ invented by John Koenig, means the frustration of being stuck in just one body that inhabits only one place at a time. 

To grasp onism is to be apprised of how little of the world you have experienced, are experiencing, or will ever experience. Photay (Evan Shornstein) composed ​Onism​ in the heart of Brooklyn and shrouded by the silence of national parks or on trips home to the woodlands of the Hudson Valley in between touring the urban centers of foreign countries. Scattered but connected, ​Onism’s​ music is a constellation that rips across the night sky of time, charting an emotional reality defined by sadness and joy, dread and wonder.

L'Rain - Heavy (But Not In Wait)

Billa Bronx’s ‘Lithium’ is a tape-driven jungle anthem driven by rebellious mourning. It is the last material to be released by Astro Nautico co-head Bennett Kuhn under the Billa Bronx moniker. 

'Lithium' was born out of emotional extremes. Kuhn recorded the track during the 2012 Father Forgive EP sessions, a time when music became a drug of sorts — part medicine, part poison — used for modulating moods, defying numbness, and revolting against the fate of losing a parent to ALS. The Billa Bronx recordings were improvised using hardware synthesizers, a loop pedal, and 1999 breakbeat editing software and recorded in single takes. Today the raw kinetics of these sessions appear an Icarian flight: just months after composing them, Kuhn was twice hospitalized and diagnosed with type-II bipolar disorder. 

Releasing ’Lithium’ six years later attests to the moments of precarity and pain in between as well as ongoing work of re-inheritance and becoming in affinity with other psychiatric survivors, ex-patients, allies, and grieving people. With commitment to the thought that music can play a central role in ongoing health justice movements everywhere, ‘Lithium’ is dedicated to Kuhn’s co-organizers at the Creative Resilience Collective, a health justice and design group based in Philadelphia. 

‘Lithium’ is available now as a digital single or bundled with limited-run screen-printed Billa Bronx t-shirts featuring original artwork by Bennett Kuhn. 

Note: Recognizing that black British immigrants from Jamaica and the West Indies were progenitors of jungle culture, gross proceeds from this release will be donated to a travel fund offering cultural exchange opportunities to youth internationally. (uccollab.org)

We all feel the passing of time, for better or for worse, but in this case it’s marked with celebration for the past, present and future. A jubilant romper, 'Time Is Certainly Passing' pays homage to stadium pop legends like Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel in a balearic adaptation more suited to intimate, fluorescent dancefloors. Driven by a rhythm at once tropical, disco and afro-beat, painted with soaringly cosmic synth orchestration washed through grand canyons of reverb, Ensemble Entendu have announced their re-arrival here underlined and bold, a testament to the confidence both artists have achieved together over time with their sound as a powerhouse creative tag-team.
