Chill Collective - Polar [C Recordings] PREMIERE

One of my most personal mixes. For this one I really tried to go outside the box conceptually - who would have thought to do a fantasy role-playing themed drum and bass mix? Having been a life long Dungeons and Dragons fan, I thought it would be cool to basically let everyone know that I was into role-playing games. And for the intro I was able to lock down the voice of Optimus Prime himself Peter Cullen! During the recording process I was patched into his headphones when he was in the studio and was even able to direct him. It wasn't until later that I discovered he had voiced the character of Venger on the 80's cartoon series Dungeons and Dragons. Awesome! The artwork was once again handled by the legendary Akira Takahashi. One of the coolest parts of the art is the reoccurring image of a dragon which is an exact copy of the dragon tattoo on my back. I always thought Akira was very clever to incorporate that image so deeply throughout the design. Though you cannot see it here, I spent a lot of time working on the liner notes so that they kind of read like stuff you would find in Dungeons and Dragons rulebooks. One of the coolest things about this project was being able to get remixes made of popular non-dnb artists like Tiësto, Sasha, Josh Wink and BT. It really sort of pushed this thing over the top at the time. Finally there is something that needs to be said about one of the tracks on here. The Paul B + Subwave remix isn't of the Tiësto tune "Flight 643". It is a remix of his track "Lethal Industry". I can't remember why this happened in the first place, but there you go! Enjoy :)

Cosmic Bridge launches its newly minted CBD (Cosmic Bridge Digital) imprint with the Innermost EP from Bristolian producer Neuropol.

Following releases for Shogun Audio's sister label SGN:LTD and Bristol's Inflect, Innermost is an autobiographical hybrid of bass, hip-hop, footwork and field recording influenced Drum’n’Bass.

"Neuropol has a rare blend of skills and history that mean he can put his life experience and his technical talent into his music, with this project he's really exploring an uplifting and emotive feel similar to modern pop which appealed to me instantly, given that he's taken that pop feel and melded it with some of the vibe we have pushed with the label already in a very tasteful way"

The EP's opener "No More" makes the whole record worth your attention alone; Neuropol calls on the vocal talents of singer Marlene Abuah and together they tenderly build on the timeless Bristol sound, updating with 160 halftime tempo, Reese bass and lump-in-throat brilliance. Poignant, icy and intense they inject emotion and personal experience into a beautiful, forlorn, filmic palette making it almost impossible not to feel something deep lurking amongst the slowfast production flourishes. 

"The Rise" goes harder, hi-tech halfstep borrowing from the syntax of collaborator Om Unit's 160 footwork/jungle explorations with rhythmic swagger and rasping staccato synth stabs it's hyper-funk under aerated sweeping orchestral chords. More Multi-layered business on "Mile Out"; Think breaks, contemporary jungle grammar and uplifting piano motifs spar deftly with half-time hip hop bounce, sculpted atmosphere, melodic sub bass and ricochet rimshots. 

Pensive stepper "25th Hour" closes the EP, pulsing with dub delay and reverb. The ever present emotive and cinematic qualities of Neuropol's music are as pronounced here as anywhere in the record, wide arcing synth pads and sound system sonics providing further moments of climax/collapse to the subtle soul and vulnerability that pervade the whole record.

Innermost EP is released on 20th November on Cosmic Bridge's new CBD Imprint which is designed to showcase new music and new artists in a more direct way in this ever-shifting musical landscape.

Translation revisits Theory’s ‘Babylon Dem’ from the Solstice EP (2010), through the eyes of its creator, The Untouchables, Double 0, and Mantra – each deliver fresh interpretations of the original, while maintaining its infectious rebel sound. Up first, Theory sets the foundation with his ‘Dem A Pree Remix’, an update for 2016 that re-explores the critical interplay between the chords and dark swirling FX of its predecessor. Next, The Untouchables brighten things up with a dub/reggae-inspired version, with a live feel to it. Veteran producer Double 0 flexes his musical versatility on the ‘Dubwise Remix’, a heavyweight rhythm for the dance with fluttering renegade sonics and a nasty low-end thump. Mantra opts for a more abstract deconstruction of the original on the ‘Charlatan Remix’, crafting a menacing and hypnotic tribal sound from the echo chamber, with sinister reverberations to close things out.

Yet again, Label-Owner Gaze ill joins forces with the Danish Dubstep ambassador RDG, this time for a 4 track collaborative EP. On the A-side the artists’ minds melt together in two pieces of Dubstep-science. As the title suggests, RDG and Gaze ill show what Dubstep is made of with ‘Keepin’ It Real’ that’s characterized by a pressuring hardness, and uplifting energy. ‘The Zone’ follows with its progressive universe that evolves in just the right way with perfect timing. The B-side shows off the two artists’ individual skills with immense, paranoid vibrations on RDG’s ‘Shapeshift’, and thrillingly deep basslines on Gaze ill’s ‘Combo’. The EP is a refreshing showcase of the genre’s finest offerings - original sound with a well-balanced diversity. RDG and Gaze ill keep it real for this first vinyl release on Cue Line Records.

RDG & Gaze ill - Keepin' It Real EP - (CLV001)

I started DJing and producing music in 2001 and early on I was captivated by this dark, almost industrial style of Drum & Bass being created by artists such as Kemal, Dom & Roland and Technical Itch and championed by DJs like Dieselboy. This music went on to influence what eventually became my early works under the pseudonym SPL.  After connecting with other producers and some of my heroes on the chat client AOL Instant Messenger (thanks Infiltrata AKA 12th Planet), my first release came out in 2005, a 12" vinyl release on Sinuous Records based in the UK. 

Shortly afterwards, I partnered up with another producer who goes by the name Limewax. We produced mostly on our individual projects, trading our progress over AOL internet chat and getting together weekly in the Netherlands (where I was living at the time). During this era we focused on pushing the limits of our sound on influential dark DnB labels such as Tech Itch recordings, Dylan's Freak Recordings and Renegade Hardware's Barcode imprint.  After building an audience in the scene, I started my on vinyl label "Lost Soul Recordings" which I would use as a launch pad for my own more experimental efforts and other work that I thought was important. From that point on, I contributed as SPL to over 35 different dark DnB vinyl releases which received DJ support from many of the genres great DJs as well as some experimental music legends and outsiders, as far reaching as folks like Aphex Twin. 

This mix features tracks that I was influenced by early on, what I consider to be darker classics, as well as music by my contemporaries and myself.  I also touch on newer music towards the end of the mix that I feel captures some of the lost vibe of "Golden Age Dark DnB".  Usually in DnB retrospective mixes, this darker sound is underrepresented so I'm putting this out to the world so people hear this important style.  These tracks are close to my heart and I hope that you enjoy the mix.

Noisia Radio S04E08 (Dj-set At Let It Roll Winter Edition 2018)

Fresh from releases on Artikal Music, Navy Cut, Modern Hypnosis, and Green King Cuts, Melbourne-based badman Alex Dickson AKA Pugilist delivers a study in contrast for ZamZam 66, with two choice cuts, “Roll Off” and “Hemisphere.”  

A-Side “Roll Off” calls all dancers to the floor with a massive dubwise take on dark garage, often imagined in fever dreams of bass madness but seldom heard in real life.  808 bass propels distorted kicks and slapping snares through rifts of reverb & space torn open by the relentless percussion. Call it bruk-techno, 130-jungle, ruffneck-raggabreaks or whatever you like, “Roll Off” will have the floor shocking out and demanding a pull-up.  

A depth charge of dubness, B-side “Hemisphere” goes two miles straight down, as a minimalist cycling bass figure pulls us deeper and deeper, martial drum fills and ricocheting high hats like gaseous bubbles rising from deep-sea vents where no light penetrates.  Lonely stabs and lasers pierce the darkness intermittently, only to be swallowed again by the void. Deep, swaggering dub techno mapping a desolate but beautiful landscape. Sounds from the Well indeed.
