Who's There

I made this track using only sounds I recorded with a micro tracker. Some of the sounds I captured, manipulated, and rendered in this composition include a toaster, the deadbolt on my front door, my fingers snapping, and even the flush of a toilet.

This was the first time I've ever done anything like this, and it was an awesome experience. The possibilities are endless, and the creative process when constructing this piece was unique compared to that of previous works.

a track i created in ableton live, which i have been getting to know for the last few weeks, using my new apc40 controller. it was tons of fun to create, the editing process will be dope as well, and im looking forward to more mad science as i continue to mix potions in my lab with joyous and reckless abandon:)

c. 2007, samson oceanfront park, sunny isles beach, miami, florida, nighttime, i was hanging out with some of jehovah's witnesses at my condo building across the street, when i just felt like they were all "normal" people, and i, a weird guy, had to get away to love and be true to myself, so, i grabbed my laptop and mic and went to the beach, i knew that my religion at the time taught that i should be hanging out, or associating, with other witnesses, that i shouldn't be isolating myself, so i sang the scripture that came to mind about that (proverbs 18:1), the bible i had on my laptop had cross references for every verse, so i sang the cross references too, layering them on top of each other, the beat and melody (really no baseline) were simple, because i was in an acutely emotional mood, i felt very clear, even if conflicted socially, lyrics: (proverbs 18:1) "one isolating himself will seek his own selfish longing, against all practical wisdom he will break forth", (exodus 33:16) "and by what, now, will it be known that i have found favor in your eyes, i and your people? is it not by your going along with us, in that i and your people have been made distinct from all the other people who are upon the surface of the ground?", (romans 14:7) "none of us, in fact, lives with regard to himself only, and no one dies with regard to himself only", (hebrews 10:25) "not forsaking the gathering of ourselves together, as some have the custom, but encouraging one another, and all the more so as you behold the day drawing near", (proverbs 15:22) "there is a frustrating of plans where there is no confidential talk, but in the multitude of counselors there is accomplishment", i've always liked this song for its simplicity and concept of concurrently sung verses, but it kinda sounds muddy and should be executed better in the future

Associating With Jehovah's People

c. 2008, Miami Beach, I was a waiter at the popular News Cafe, I can't remember exactly why I had a bad "day" (it was actually night), but, you know, someone pisses you off or something, at the time I worked with this beautiful Israeli girl named Natalie, and so after work I  sat out in the front garden area of my apartments (Campton Apartments next to Club Camio, boom-boom-boom-boom all night every night + occasional dj air horns, the same apartments Ace Ventura stayed in, in Pet Detective) and made this song in Ableton on my Celeron Dell laptop, I kinda' sang words impromptu including Natalie's name, because thinking of her was comforting, but the rest of my vocals are just emotional decompression, of course I beatboxed (since 7th grade) and resampled the beats, so I could splice them up

c. 2003, Madtracker software with various randomizing VST plug-ins, and since OMD days, i've always loved choir sounds, not much more to say here

c. 2003, I've always liked this song, a beat, yes, then a melody, all done on MadTracker, I recorded audio off Skype of my old best friend, Jesse Buckler, he was on his computer, and you can hear his wife in the background, finally my sad melody comes in, and this almost becomes a song

Astro Raph (born Jacob Shier) began producing Jungle/Drum’nBass, Trip Hop and House and DJing in 1993. He moved to Boulder, Colorado where he did a weekly 3 hour show on Amino Internet Radio; even landing the opportunity to open for Ambient DJ Mix Master Morris (aka The Irresistible Force). In ’98 he appeared on a compilation known as “Awake In The Lap Of A Dream” through the record label Freakie People. 

It was in 2005 when Astro moved to Hawaii and hooked up with local DJ crew ‘ChillTown Maui’ before getting signed with Cold Busted Records. His first release with the label being a remix of Gramatik’s “Tearin’ It Up”. In 2011, he won 2nd place in the Mauitimes ‘Weekly Best Of” for best DJ on the island. 

2014 saw Astro Raph getting signed to Gravitas Records with a release titled “Eternal Spirit”. It includes collaborations with Audio Diplomats and Keen Klaws, and features remixes by Wolf-e-Wolf and Soulular.

In 2016, he released with another label focused on ambient and electronica with chill-trap influences, Cyborg Recordings. In 2018 he landed gigs with Proper Chicago Drum & Bass crew and worked an internship with Maek Records. 

In 2020 Astro started releasing deep house and techno with Trax Mission Records. He currently holds down a weekly Mixcloud show at www.mixcloud.com/live/astro303/ on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Mondays at 5pm [CDT] and is in Full Sail University getting a degree in Music Production.
