Bapari (aka Arielle Baptiste) is a Haitian-American musician, producer and DJ. They have released music with Popcan Records, Mollyhouse Records, Chroma NY, XXIII and Internet Friends. In addition to producing for a number of recording artists, their debut solo EP ‘Daybreak’ released this past March. Bapari has created soundtracks and scores that have been featured at Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, Redbull Music x Compose LA, as well as New York Fashion Week. They’ve headlined Boiler Room LA, played Melting Point & Papi Juice in New York, as well as numerous parties across the USA. Bapari DJs and hosts the monthly show Puffy on NTS radio and last year served as the tour DJ for Steve Lacy. Their musical style explores electronic experimentation by fusing cinematics, the avant-garde and dance music elements to create anywhere from unique underground club tracks to genre-bending sonic landscapes. Most recently Bapari was selected for the LANDxAIR artist residency program hosted by Nomadic Divisions and Werkärtz and last year they were accepted into a two-year residency program by NAVEL, the artist collective and performance space in downtown Los Angeles. They formerly played drums in the punk band F U Pay Us, as well as soccer for the Haitian national team.

In the late 1980s when techno and house were becoming increasingly popular in Europe, a DJ from Curacao was performing at Den Haag’s Club Voltage. DJ Moortje accidentally dropped a dancehall track at 45rpm rather than 33, and he let it play out. The crowd loved it. That's how bubbling, also known as bubbling house, was born, and from this point became a crucial part of Holland’s Afro-diasporic club circuit. 

Den Haag-based producer De Schuurman helped evolve the sound in the late 2000s, as spotlighted on the Nyege Nyege Tapes release Bubbling Inside, mostly made up of archival tracks made between 2007-2009, but also including recent productions. De Schuurmans sets are full of bubbling house squeaky vocals, rapid beats mixed with rap and R&B samples, trance synths, and electro wobbles.

It’s a privilege to have the Bristol-based and half of the mighty duo @giantswan , @munsing  (Harry Wright) playing on the second half of my show. 
Mun Sing’s uncompromising ingenuity of sonic weaponry explores bone rattling, fragmented cyber grime and radioactive trap templates. An attack of fluctuating polyrhythms that pan from left to right creating a delirious effect. Amplified dissonant noise. Syncopated and visceral neo-EBM drum patterns that disintegrate, dissolve and accelerate then starkly shrink with an adrenaline fuelled industrial intensity.
Mun Sing is Wright’s tool to challenge the conventions and aesthetics of modern day club culture. To experiment with ideas of inclusivity and positivity, influenced by mainstream pop music by injecting pop’s marketing methods into the more serious, austere club world. Dance routines, obnoxious visuals and brash costumes all feature in the live show, where Mun Sing uses these elements as a means to highlight inclusivity, movement and fun.

Crystallmess at Positive Education Festival 2021

One early morning in Athens during a little online digging session I stumbled across Ecuador-based artist Entrañas' Bandcamp page - a rich treasure trove of self-released EPs and singles that only dates back two years - a surprising discovery since there's so much music on there! I was instantly drawn to his experimental club take on Latin American soundscapes, incorporating elements of reggaeton and dembow whilst keeping this very futuristic and often metallic feeling to the records. He also runs the CUMBIA.TU.MENTE (CTM) record label, also launched in 2020, where he has released music from the likes of NTFL (who he collaborates with often), Kaifo, PVSSY, Malafama, Hannah Lee and more. There was also the recent release of a mammoth 17-track compilation 'CTM / DEATH IS NOT THE END', out in December last year, with tracks contributions from a lot of the label's staples. Entrañas has also contributed mixes to platforms such as NAAFI's NTS show, JEROME and Discos Paraiso. 

Speaking about his contribution to 909's mix series, Entrañas says, "darkness, syncopations, polyrhythms and rich textures mark this mix in which I show my fascination for broken rhythms and heavy bass."

Taipei’s B E N N brings his club-convulsing blend of sounds into the Rhythmic Culture podcast this week. After an extended stop over in London, the Over My Body co-founder temporarily returned to Taiwan inspired, with a commitment to create. He has since been producing high definition, percussion-heavy hard drum tracks at a furious rate. His style draws from genres on the bass continuum, merged with traditional Taiwanese sounds and his innate and unique sense of rhythm. We’re ready to go, are you?
