Introduction to Sun Devil Psych Online, the Pod

In this very first episode of Sun Devil Psych Online, the Pod, ASU teaching professors and co-hosts, Dr. Laura Petrolle Clemons and Dr. Natalie Fabert, introduce the podcast series and interview each other. You will learn about their professional and educational backgrounds and their inspiration for “The Pod.”  The co-hosts also reflect on their experiences teaching online courses and discuss resources and courses of interest to online psychology students.  Potential future podcast episodes are proposed. Finally, the co-hosts put out a call for help with their podcast series “jingle.”

Episode 1: Meet your hosts

In this episode, Dr. Clemons and Dr. Fabert welcome guest, Dr. Karen Weston – Dr. Weston is the director of Psychology Digital Immersion Programs (BA/BS/MS) and an assistant teaching professor of psychology for the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, here at ASU.

In this interview, we learn from Dr. Weston’s insights into these programs and unique program offerings. Dr. Weston introduces us to several degree pathways in psychology and discusses some of the distinctive learning opportunities offered in our psych online program - such as the 4+1 option and the NCUIRE research option. Dr. Clemons, Dr. Fabert, and Dr. Weston make a very exciting announcement: the launch of the positive psychology concentration slated to debut this fall.

Episode 2: Getting psyched about psych degrees with Dr. Weston

In this episode, Dr. Clemons and Dr. Fabert discuss "special topics" courses in psychology offered online through ASU's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences.  
 
Dr. Fabert spotlights her new course, PSY 394: The Social Psychology of Cults. This course is offered for the first time this summer of 2023 during Session B.  
 
Dr. Clemons spotlights PSY 494: Professional Field Experience (PFE) which provides advanced students (both undergraduate and graduate students) an opportunity to apply psychological principles across real-world settings within the field and to cultivate experiential knowledge of agencies and other institutions that can serve to inform academic and career trajectories. Enrolled students are required to complete a 40-hour field placement over the course of the session (5 to 10 hours per week), in addition to a series of didactic assignments that involve self-reflection and integration of psychological concepts.

Episode 3: Getting psyched about special topics courses

In this episode, Dr. Clemons and Dr. Fabert welcome guests, Dr. Elisa Kawam – Master of Social Work (MSW) Program Coordinator and Assistant Teaching Professor with Arizona State University (ASU) School of Social Work and Dr. Marcos Martinez - Online MSW Program Coordinator Assistant Teaching Professor with ASU’s School of Social Work. In this interview, we learn about the field of Social Work as well as the social work degree offerings at ASU.  

Notably, we learn about how our undergraduate psychology students are uniquely well-prepared for the MSW programs at ASU including ASU’s online MSW program which prepares students for licensure and practice. The online MSW program trains students to work with individuals, families, communities and in the world at large. ASU’s online MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Episode 4: Getting psyched about social work

In this episode, Dr. Clemons and Dr. Fabert welcome guest, Dakota Webber. Dakota is the Assistant Director of Career Readiness with ASU’s Career and Professional Development Services. Dakota is also the Pat Tillman Veteran Center - Career Services liaison. Dakota is adept in creating relevant and effective career readiness programming and support for our students.  Dakota earned her Master’s in Education with a focus in Higher & Post-Secondary Education Administration from ASU and a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology with an emphasis in Military Psychology from ASU.  In this interview, we learn from our fellow Sun Devil about some really meaningful services and resources provided by ASU Career and Professional Development Services.

Lisa is a recent graduate of our psychology online program as well as our campus immersion master’s of counseling program. Lisa is a current Psy.D. candidate at Midwestern University. Join us as we learn more about Lisa’s experiences in the program and beyond and engage a meaningful discussion around our psychology degree and pathways.
