Departures 17/09/23

A slightly different show this week... instead of the usual Departures format, I recreated a special set of music I played for the launch event of the latest edition of Popeye Magazine at Systems Studio a few days earlier.  The edition features an article about Peter Kapos, director of Das Programm, one of the leading authorities on the design philosophy of Dieter Rams and owner of the largest archive of Braun and Vitsoe designs and artefacts.

Peter and I originally met many years back due to my work as an industrial designer and our shared fascination for Dieter Rams and Braun. He invited me to create a set of music for the event, inspired by the incredible environment of the studio, the designs inside and the people in attendance, and perform it using a hybrid of my own modern day equipment as well as a vintage Braun turntable, amp and electrostatic speakers from the archive itself.

Expect a unique set of music pushing the connections between old and new, classic and contemporary, analogue and digital. Featuring music from artists such as Brian Eno, Aphex Twin, Nils Frahm, Swayzak and Joy Orbison, to Floating Points, Curtis Mayfield, Diana Ross and Syl Johnson.

Expect a unique set of music reflecting the point at which London and Italian culture overlaps, and inspired by the food, environment and people of the event itself. Blending vintage jazz, neo-classical, ambient electronica, Italo Disco and deep techno, and featuring music from artists such as Nina Simone, Donna Summer, Donatella Viggiano and The Dave Brubeck Quarter, through to Leifur James, Ishmael Ensemble, Øro, Lars Bartkuhn and Skee Mask.

Departures for Bloop 09/03/20 (music only)

As we all hunker down at home for survival from the Corona virus, I'm unable to get to the studio to do my usual live weekly radio show. So I've decided instead to record a weekly mix from home. Similar in style to Departures, featuring new and recent music, but selected and arranged to reflect some of the feelings we're all facing in these unprecedented times.

Like a lot of places, we're in the midst of a second lockdown here in the UK.  This combined with the damper, duller days of winter, is adding an extra level of challenge to staying motivated and upbeat through these difficult times.  I've designed this mix to encapsulate some of those slightly dark, muddy, unsettled feelings, and contrasted them with a few of the hazy touches of summer that I'm craving, that feel more like a distant dream at the moment.  If like me, you're feeling little low right now, then you might as well go with it but the hope is that the summery touches give you a lift and the mix leaves you in a better place at the end.  Stay positive, turn it up and enjoy...

Stay At Home Series - Seasonal Affective Disorder

A classically trained musician with a foundation in jazz and classical music, Asubu found his way into electronic music through hedonistic scene of 90’s London and followed it's progression through House, Techno, Drum and Bass, Electronica and everything in between.  This introduction and hunger for new sounds combined with his eclectic taste, informs his sound as a DJ.  His main aim being to lace together all the sounds he loves in a cohesive way to suit the time and environment, creating emotive sets of music, limited by nothing but quality, innovation and ultimately the desire for escapism through music.
