METAPHYSIX: III, CORRESPONDENCE

The third law of Metaphysix is titled Correspondence, which refers to a universal law that states “as above so below, and vice versa"—in other words, the universe is a fractal, and it's all connected. In this series, we look at the relationship and musical connection between Paris and Ultramajic.  We invited our close friends to take part of this compilation, and we also have a new artist joining the ranks: Crystal Bandito. 

This is the Ultramajic correspondence: Five ostensibly disparate producers from around the world translating similar musical ideas through cultural barriers. Label boss Jimmy Edgar finds a common ground with French talents Bambounou, French Fries, and Bobmo in rigid Chicago-influenced drum workouts, dusty drum hits, and staccato blasts. The two mysterious names on the track list, on the other hand—Aden and Crystal Bandito—offer a massive stomper with chunky hip-hop vocals and a unhinged techno tune with rashes of metallic percussion, respectively.

Newfangled LA duo Crown Ruff might be a new name, but the duo exhibit a steady hand in the sunset vibes of "Keep Up." The blissed-out synth line is propped up by a laid-back version of a techno stab in the background, suggesting that this one might be the perfect transition tune from daytime pool party to night time rager.

The Lost Mixes Part 3

After a two and half year absence, The Lost Mixes makes a welcome return to Saved Records. Part 3 has come to fruition after a recent trip to the Saved vaults unearthed two hidden gems that simply demanded the right to see the light of day with a proper release. Nic Fanciulli & Butch’s lost remix of Lauren Lane’s “Cool Kids” and Mark Fanciulli’s “8 Track” Terrace Mix finally stand up to take the limelight they deserve.

Nic Fanciulli & Butch hone in on “Cool Kids” distinctive bassline for their delightfully playful remix. Keeping it simple, the pair inject a sense of swing into the grove courtesy of jostling beats and a frenetic top end. Laidback and fun, the remix finds a highly addictive quality through its own simplicity.

Mark Fanciulli ramps up the energy and dives headfirst into an unadulterated driving techno groove on “8 Track." Echoed brass parts and impassioned vocals fill the remix with a carnival spirit that runs right the way through the booming 4/4s and deep, driving basslines that provide the backbone.

OG UK house music don Dave Seaman is about to drop his new Gumball EP next week, and we're premiering the on-point tech house reworking from Hive Audio heavyweight Dario D'Attis.

No clubhead can argue with Swiss producer's dramatically worked version of 'Gumball' as it's a deep, sinister roller that'll could muscle its way in around 2am and get the floor really working.

Little known fact, but Seaman was one of Mixmag's early editors back in the 80's, so its only appropriate that we tip the cap to this scene legend.

DJ Koze's 2013 album opus Amygdala has continued to bewitch all who encounter it since its release. Tipped as his own personal Sgt. Pepper, the sublime long-player revealed a fully-realised and personal body of work, complete with a classic songwriting at its core, House in its heart, and veins coursing with psychedelic color. La Duquesa' was the album's dreamy single standout, a journey into deep, tropical ecstasy. XTC' begins in the same spirit, and captures the all the blissful allusions of its name, but its initial gentility belies the deep intensity to come. Floating pads glow with celestial ambience as a kick drum is gradually coaxed into solid form, and the introduction of spoken text begins the second act. Many people are experimenting with the drug Ecstasy,' it says, ...is the drug like the lie and meditation the truth Or am I missing something that could really help me". XTC' then transforms: sweetly imploring tones become demanding, gentle gradients between chords turn hard-edged, and sharp hi-hats cut through the haze. Complete with Koze's signature percussive quirks, it drives towards the track's final pay off: an undeniable, all-consuming, irresistible high. Knee On Belly' recalls Koze at his most tongue-in-cheek and overt, it is bright, bold and literally brassy, using cut-up horns of all shapes and sizes to patchwork together his own unique arrangement. With the highs and mid ranges accounted for, Koze adds in a swollen, thrumming bass line to mix to bring this floor-filler to life. Knee on Belly' recalls a raw, filtered and funky approach to groove, with a nod to disco house and the art of artful sampling, as it orbits between its own neon highs and simmering lows.

Doctor Dru - The Grain (Original Mix)

2015 will see German techno mainstay Stephan Bodzin ready to unleash his next full-length musical vision on the world. Entitled “Powers of Ten”, the 10-track album will land in June 2015 on his own Herzblut Recordings and provides another great insight into the melodically rich muscle mind of this modern great.
Says Stephan Bodzin of the LP: “Powers of Ten has been with me all my life and is named after a book that has been my background hiss, its confusing truth is my only real faith and its infinity shows me its finiteness. The album is about harmonies, melodies, rhythms. It is an homage to Bob Moog, full of techno beats and sounds and space and party and ecstasy and dancing and listening, and crying and feeling. It is a journey, a philosophy of life, a view of the world, a vague perception. It is my wife, my children, my family, my friends, my passion, my enemy, my greatest fulfillment, my fear, my deepest peace, my power, all my love.”
As such, this album is hugely personal and is filled with cerebral messages and well thought out concepts. All this shines through and makes it an all the more engaging listen from start to finish. Kicking off with the spine tingling chords and louche beats of ‘Singularity’ cuts like ‘Lila’ then continue to confirm that Stephan Bodzin has a classical understanding of melody that is way beyond your average.
‘Blue Giant’, ‘Wir’ and ‘Ix’ all manage to be uplifting and thoughtful at the same time as driven and groovy, whilst ‘Birth’ comes on with a hymnal high note, long tailed pads and subtly shifting beats. The ghostly grooves of ‘Zulu’ mark a majestic mid point to the album, which then continues to seduce with spiritual synths and more beautiful melodies on cuts like ‘Odyssee’ as well as the album’s standout title track.
Unfolding coherently and in soothing fashion, this album once again proves that few producers in the modern world have a knack for melody and an ear for sonic ingenuity quite like Stephan Bodzin.

Premiere: Boys Noize & T.E.E.D 'Spacer'

Miss Kittin returns to Anja Schneider’s Mobilee on this naughty little techno number.
Teaming up with Southern French producer Nicolas Massayeff, who has seen releases on the likes of Suara, Tsuba and Noir, the June EP sees a release as part of the Mobilee ten-year anniversary celebrations and features four solid, dance-floor focussed gems. 

Taken from the EP, i-D are pleased to premiere, My Man. The closing track from the EP rolls straight in with tight percussion and breathy strings from the off, quickly moving into a deep groove and haunting vocal that moves all the way through you lighting up the dance floor every time.

Gold & Glad is the first track of the ep, it's a declaration of love as a metaphor, on a funky background. Studio 54 is a kind of homage to the Grand Cerrone, and how his career took another turn. Hit Explosion is a title that is listened to and savored until the explosion of the title.
NCDS is a title for the live, which created a symbiosis between the arrival of the Internet and electronic devices that we know, with the master guitar Lilian know always to make the music better. And finally, the fifth track of the Ep which is called J. Fox Lorean DMC, is a return in the year 80s, with synthesizers that put us in the sci-fi universe of time. Gold & Glad, is a melting pot of several events and periods in the past without forgetting to learn from ours. Colorful, warm, full of life and groove, this Ep is only here to make you dance, sing, and that you spend a wonderful evening beside a swimming pool or enjoying a delicious cocktail by the Sea. ✧
