Er ist Experte in Sachen Musikelektronik und Körper und untersucht die ästhetischen Bedingungen für einen live-elektronischen Musikraum. "Anstatt Zeit und Raum durch Klang zu kontrollieren, erstelle ich Architekturen für kollektive musikalische Prozesse", so Atau Tanaka über seine Arbeit. In diesem Semester hat er die Edgard-Varèse-Gastprofessur im Fachgebiet Audiokommunikation an der Technischen Universität Berlin inne.

Made from the rests. I brought my laptop home after my Ted X Sorbonne gig to find the Max patch still running. In the buffers were guitar licks and me scatting and beatboxing very badly, but all segmented and concatenating randomy as background noise. Lo and behold, turning up the energy sliders by hand (instead of sending live accelerometer signals in) let me gear up into actual non-noise segments from the recording creating a more joyful noise. Just stick it on, a 20min journey of the rejected, the unwanted, the rests.

Atau Tanaka’s first inspirations came  meeting John Cage. He studied at CCRMA with John Chowning and conducted research at IRCAM and Sony CSL. He formed Sensorband with Zbigniew Karkowski and Edwin van der Heide, S_S_S with Cecile Babiole and Laurent Dailleau, and performed with Merzbow, Otomo, and KK Null. He has presented his work at Ars Electronica, ZKM, Sonar, Transmediale, Eyebeam, SFMOMA.
