DENMAN - Point Blank Records Guest Mix - August 2023

Volume 4 in the series, a House & G affair with mostly records I've owned for the last 10 or so years and a few recent purchases. 
UK and US stuff throughout from '94-'98.
The Initial Pressure idea was born around 2013 and has finally come back 10 years later.

Towards the end of 1995 into 1996, Garage DJs were moving away from solely playing US imports at +6 and sets started to feature a lot more UK-produced records with higher energy, heavier basslines and lavish melodies. 

By ‘96 labels like Urban Beat, Confetti and Underground Classics were putting out incredible tunes that were distinctly different to what came before. 

Sped-up records from New York were still prevalent but sets were predominantly made up of a fresh, totally London-based sound. Stations like Freek FM were pushing Garage in a new direction with DJ Maddness and EZ at the forefront, building on what the likes of Hermit and Dominic Spreadlove had been doing for the previous few years at Gass Club in Leicester Square. 

EZ’s Flavour Zone and Maddness’s KMA shows on Freek are personally my favourite mixes ever and what got me into Garage to begin with.

During 1997 the sound completely evolved again with skippy, chunkier drums, even bigger basslines and a more experimental feel. 2 Step and Speed Garage took hold by the end of the year and while this is definitely the trendier side of Garage these days, the period just before this has always been my preference; a blend of those amazing US House records and London’s new take on them. 

I wanted this to feel like a Freek FM show so everything in the mix is from around those brilliant years of 1996 & 1997, apart from a few new tunes produced by me. Pure House & G flava. 

This is probably my favourite mix I’ve recorded tune-wise with some of the (I think) best records I own, a lot of which I’ve had for 10+ years but never put in a mix. Enjoy.
