IFF 1. Still

Performed by Corey Klein and Damaris Richerts 

The concept behind this duet involves an exploration of the liminal
area between sleeping and waking, consciousness and
unconsciousness, the dreamless depths of sleep and surface REM
sleep, and the limits or boundaries of this area.

In terms of sound, this translates as the area between breath and
sound, manifesting as pitched and upitched air sounds, multiphonics
and split tones. By collaborating closely with the two musicians, we
were able to develop a vocabulary of these sounds using a
combination of unusual techniques. Despite the linear narrative that
informed the mental process of its writing, the piece avoids
presenting clear-cut sections and instead seeks to express the
evolving/revolving of this sound-world.
The staging of the piece, which takes into account the direction of
the instruments' bells and the potential for antiphony, combined with
the fact that I wish for the musicians to communicate aurally rather
than visually, adds an element of acoustic sculpting and erodes the
convention of the audience-performer placement dynamic as the
performers frequently do not face the audience.

Soundtrack to A Sibila (The Sybil): Quina's Theme

'Lune' is the first movement of a larger piece, 'Lune et l'autre' for mixed amateur choir. 

Commissioned by Choeur des Concerts Saint-Mandéens, it was performed by them and conducted by Antonin Rey in Paris, 8 December 2015.

NB: this recording is not an ideal rendition of the piece: this choir found their first encounter with less-conventional music quite challenging!

‘Inici’ means ‘beginnings’ in Catalan. The initial layered fabric of sounds recalls a natural environment, starting with the sound of wind through the trees. A dance emerges from the scattered fragments and develops into a chaos of real-time harmonies made dissonant by their reflections. 

For alto recorder and digital delay with echoes at 5, 10, 13, and 15 seconds.

For most of us the universe is a locus of the imagination. The
conceptual size of it pulls width into our minds. From Galileo’s
telescope to photographic fly-bys, the more we glean the more
fantastical it seems. How can descriptions of red snow,
century-long storms, and ice volcanoes do anything but elicit
wonder?

Neptune, dark, cold and swept by supersonic winds, is not visible from Earth with the naked eye.

The largest of its thirteen moons is peculiar: unlike its misshapen brother, Proteus, Triton orbits the (other) blue planet ‘backwards’. The only moon in the entire solar system known to do so, ‘strange’ and ‘independent’ Triton trails a retrograde-rotating question about its origin.

Named after the trumpeting messenger of the sea, distant Triton is at the very edge of our knowledge: we know it is one of the coolest objects in our solar system (-237.6ºC); that it is one of the few volcanically active moons (eruptions constantly shift its topography); and Voyager 2 captured a partial photo of its surface in 1989.

Triton Is One Of The Coolest

Athena has lived in the United States, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, England, Italy, France, and the Netherlands: a physical nomadism which generates a delving curiosity and demands a multilingualism which is in itself a web of sound combinations. 
 
Born in 1989, Athena graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class Honours BA in Music, followed by two years of composition at the Conservatorio G. Verdi in Milan, Italy. Her compositions have been performed in Ireland, England, Spain, Italy, France, Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden and the USA.
