In the modern socio-cultural war, there is a constant artistic attempt to strike back through sonic manifestos, participation in networks and establishment of countercultures using sonic weapons. Urban ghettos constitute the internal south of the global system. Thus, contemporary music interconnects and joins forces with rhythms and sounds from the colonised and the oppressed in the present and the past, inspiring and mobilising for freedom and equality.

This mix includes records, audio files and a tape delay blending experimental ambience, slow and heavy gems, all considered as appropriate for the late summer moon’s phase also known as Hunter’s moon.

Ioannis (Monoscopic Studio) and Foukodian Rhythms (Anopolis Records) have been collaborating since 2011. Co-founders of KOCMOC collective, they try to deliver their perspective through designing, mixing, djing and producing.

With the winter solstice still weeks away in Western Europe, this is a dark time in more ways than one. Heralding from Finland, Elina Tapio is accustomed to endless nights. During the colder months in the Nordic country, the sun rises below the horizon, meaning there is little to no daylight. For this instalment of the Knekelhuis series, together with Hannah Pezzack, she presents a mix dedicated to the darkness: gothic ambient, ethereal voices, potent industrial and eerie experimentation.  

Having met in Amsterdam, the pair hold a residency on Tbilisi's Mutant Radio which airs ‘Scrying the Landscape’ – a show exploring uncanny and ecological compositions – on a bi-monthly basis. Originally from the UK, Hannah Pezzack is an editor and music journalist who has contributed liner notes to Knekelhuis, as well as to Osàre! Editions and Dekmantel. As a duo, Hannah and Elina are united by their love for spectral, sonic storytelling.

A wintry mix featuring music I tend to frequent at the outset of colder months, balancing modern classical roughness and ambient music steeped in depth. 

As with last year, around this time I recall the reasons why I began this project - to map sounds which I feel are perfect to listen to whilst with someone else, or when wishing not to be alone. I think this mix hits the sonic spot when it comes to loneliness, or being solitary, which one way or another both seem to rear their heads at this time of year. 

Plenty of love to @Glacial_Movements and @enmossed, both of which have kept me going this year with their ever-excellent curation.

Vivian Koch is a Berlin based musician and DJ who runs the Olympe party series and is also co-runs the project Olympe Fatale with her partner Jessica Tille, where she combines visual and conceptual art with electronic music. In this mix, she flows between mellow, melodic electro and energetic breaky electronics. Next year she has a number of events and exhibitions planned across Germany and abroad.

Identified Patient’s Bleep mix is a journey into darkside psychedelia and netherworld electronics which tops 100 minutes in length. The tracklisting is hugely varied in style - dark ambient, mutant junglism, caustic industrial experiments, leftfield techno and just about any other style with a confrontational, challenging aesthetic is roped into service by Identified Patient here. However, no matter which genre the producer/DJ is operating in at a given moment, the uniform feeling one gets from this mix is of dark energy. From the wandering drones and trip-hop lopes which kick things off to the frenetic rhythm work of the home straight, this mix remains as seductive as it is ominous.

"When acoustic-based electro and industrial sounds come together, it gives a kind of musical tension and discomfort that I really like. In a way, I feel this mix is a reflection of that. We are delighted to open the new year with a wonderful mix by Istanbul's treasure Ece Özel. She has been shining the light on her local scene for the last couple of years, either through the refined selection in her mixes, programming Year Zero radio, or running the label Müstesna Records. She had a chat on facebook with Jonáš Verešpej (@still-sparkling) about the empty streets of Istanbul, being in the fashion industry, and developing the progression of her mixes.
