Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. What did these tracks mean to you once?

A: Every single track in this mix means pretty much everything to me. It sums up 100% what I used to play in Berlin - in the year 2003 & 2005 & 2007. I played each of these tracks a million times probably back then:) The first 2 hours were mixed on Vinyl. It’s a mix of Rap, Dope Beats, Soul & Funk, Nu-Jazz, Electroclash, Indie Dance, Disco Rock, Aristocratic Booty Beats, B-More, Mash-Ups, Favela Funk, Post Cash Pop & Pre-Madonna, Low-End, Hiptronica, Dubstep, Jungle. I am still realizing how much these records mean to me (even if some of them are very cheesy but HEY so much fun!)  than those billions of MP3s I carry around in my USB stick now. 

Q: How did you follow the development of electronic music the past decades?

A: I used to be a Hip Hop DJ in the middle / late 1990ies but got quickly bored with just playing one style. I bought records from various genres. I went in tons of different Vinyl stores in Berlin and was always looking for the perfect beat - no matter what genre and then try to mix it up and present my music history / background to the audience. I later started ordering some Vinyl in Manchester via Picadilly Records - I guess around 2004. They were early on with the Indie Dance sound which seems to be popular in these days again. Via Broken Beats, UK Garage, Disco & Indie Dance I  got more into House / Deep House / Acid and a bit of Techno (the good one - not the bad one) later. I used to have a weekly 2 hour radio show on Radio Fritz in Berlin/Potsdam - from 2008 until 2016 - I always covered lots of different dance genres. Anything was possible and still is for me these days.

Q: Which future Shir Khan projects are currently on the way - so: What's coming next?

A: Gonna release a new Black Jukebox edition in September. Black Jukebox is my Disco House Vinyl Series. Go and have a look for: Shir Khan Presents Black Jukebox 32. It’s hot! Besides that I am keeping busy with my label Exploited and also focus on some new projects here in Asia. Living in Bangkok since some years now and currently enjoying island life on Koh Phangan, Thailand. Sadly we are still in sort of a lockdown - but I am trying to stay optimistic & focused meanwhile.

Q: Let's talk about your mix. Why did you choose these tracks?

A: Because in the old days they made me realize the importance of bass and what kind of mood it can create. Because it also made me understand how important low frequencies are for our mood. They meant a lot to me back in the days and still mean a lot to me nowadays.

Q: How have you experienced the pandemic over the past two years and how do you reflect this period today?

A: That was a break that none of us DJs would ever have done for fun. Since it was forced, I practiced acceptance and tried to make the best of it. I was recovering from traveling and doing streams because I wanted to keep DJing. I thought to myself: Before I do this alone at home, people can also experience it. That's why I prefer to hang up a few cameras and let them participate. I did a lot of music production and studio work and used the time to check my status quo. During this phase, I also decided to move away from Germany, which probably wouldn't have happened so quickly without the pandemic. Anyway, I can say that since the pandemic is over and we're back on tour, I'm enjoying my job and techno almost even more than I ever have before. So this break did something good for me.

Q: What projects are you working on right now and what's coming up?

A: I re-started my label CLR and I'm currently working on a lot of remixes and own productions that will be out soon. And I have a collaboration going on that I don't want to say anything about just yet, but it's something to look forward to. I'm also working on new material for Mute, for example another EP that will follow my "Another Day" album. In 2023 I'll be working on a new album again.

3 QUESTIONS to OBERST & BUCHNER:

Q: Let's get into the mood for your mix. Why did you choose these tracks and how did they connect you with the bass once?

A: The mix shows our transition from rock to electronic music. It consists of tracks from Indie, ambient rock, progressive- and postrock, as well as different genres of electronica. It resonates influences that guided us from our band era 2005-2009 to electronic music. At this time we also tried to incorporate synths and synthetic drums to our post-rock projects clearly influenced by acts like Radiohead, the Notwist or John Frusciante to name a few. Maybe one realises our shift from rock to electronic music with acts like modeselektor, console or pantha du prince, who became relevant for us because they didn’t change aesthetics in terms of atmosphere of our former musical taste and outcome. Without forgetting the routes in the epic sound walls of 2010s postrock and indie hymns - from where we derive as musicians - we still try to incorporate those elements into our music. 

Q: Reflecting the past 2+ years of pandemic: What did you do in this time and how did you handle lockdown and creativity in one?

A: On the one hand, the pandemic finally gave us the time to do music again, and realize a very big project like our second album „marble arch“. Since we normally both have day jobs beside the Oberst & Buchner project and the Heimlich Musik label, we finally had the freedom to get up in the morning and jam the whole day. We were not on the road at weekends so weekends where dedicated to producing music. In the first three weeks of lockdown we finished 10 remixes and an EP. Things that would have taken us a year normally. On the other hand it was hard to gain creativity for club music when clubs where closed and the most important part of clubbing, which is „being in a club“ was missing. 

Q: Talking about future projects: What's on the way, what's coming next?

A: Up next we release a remix for Dina Summer (Kalipo & Local Suicide) on Iptamenos Records. Currently we are working on an EP with vocalists Tobias Koett and Toby Whyle, And preparing remixes for Tosca on K7! an the band Nihils.

3 QUESTIONS to ELIF:
Q: What a huge storyteller. Guess you could have mixed 300+ tracks. So why did you choose these tracks now and what did they mean to you once and still mean to you today? 

A: Thank youuu! I have been a fan of this brilliant podcast series for some time and it's a huge honor to be invited. So, yes, it was a big process to record this mix, a very special one for me, especially to decide on which tracks I wanted to include in it. And the thought process behind it. I think I can say that I have never put so much thought in another mix I have recorded. The story of How I Met The Bass definitely received very special attention from me. I tried to include as many influences as I could, but like you said, I could easily make a 10 hour mix. The elimination process happened with the flow of the story, and obviously I had to leave out so many other amazing tracks that shaped my musical understanding today. But these are still a good representation of my musical influence and I am happy with the journey I created. 

Q: How would you describe your own musical development since you first got in touch with Electronic Music? 

A: It is very similar to me, how I am as a person, I would say. Changing and evolving all the time, while keeping the very core of it untouched. A little bit like having that something special that hits the spot in common in so many different forms.

Q: What projects are you currently working on and what can we expect from you soon? 

A: I am obsessively and enthusiastically working on my new label: Marginalia. I am excited to create a platform to support, nurture and develop the incredible output of the producers whose music I have been playing all over the world over the past years. The concept of Marginalia itself dates back to the 11th Century and references the wildly inventive notes, markings, doodles and sketches made in the margins of medieval books and scriptures — a place where the human imagination was free to run wild. To translate this age-old creative even witty tradition into a twenty-first century paradigm, I am looking forward to hopefully and humbly giving back to the incredible pool of artists I admire and think deserve more recognition. The first release should come around September. Non-stop touring and creating a passion project at the same time is already taking lots of my time, yet I try to also produce whenever I have the time & inspiration. So we can expect lots of fresh music!
