Ravingman is one of Asphalt’s alma mater. More than a scholar, he is the school per se, and his archeological mixes are sonic cathedrals assembled with the building blocks of the ‘nuums knowledge. It’s no coincidence that on what is considered the saddest week of the year, we pay homage to the dark ages with this mix based on the intersection of jungle & hardcore also known as Darkcore.  	

To provide further clarity on the matter, Ravingman lit a candle, put on his cloak, and sharpened his quill: “My favorite moment of jungle’s genesis stands between 93 and 94, when a massive ecstasy intake led to a paranoia phase in which the euphoric sounds of rave turned into darkness, right before the advent of jungle and dnb. The once far away dystopian and paranoid future of 1994, has become after 30 years, today 's doomed present. A present rich in crowd controlling technologies, addiction to mobile devices and social media which ironically leads to antisocial behavior. The darker sounds of 93/94 are now 2024’s perfect soundtrack.

On top of well known architects such as Dilinja, Photek o 4hero, this mix features a second line of producers in the trio Intense, Dj Fokus, Essence of Aura, Tango, Love Dove Jay, Skanna and the legendary Studio Monroe for whom Pete Voyager Parsons sound engineered, as well as a bunch of obscure white-labels (pun intended). The mixing style, rich in breakdowns, effects and small insertions between tracks, is fully intentional, and crafted to emphasize the cinematic paranoia aspect of it. 

Darkcore got quickly buried when many of these producers migrated to greener pastures, -such as the jazz influenced jungle of 95-, while others simply retired. Nowadays, this sound is seeing the light again thanks to a flurry of represses that are bringing back darkness to a new generation. As a footnote, the duo Vex’D paid homage to the metallic and abrasive track Vexxed which is featured in this mix, but in a 2005 dubstep context. Its title became the blueprint for their moniker.”

The cover was shot by our black and white magician Vansalaman, who sent us a picture that could very well be paying posthumous homage to our revered Juan Mendez aka Silent Servant. His loss has caused absolute devastation in the community, and coincided with the reception of our darker podcast, in a rather macabre and horrendous turn of events.
