PART 2a: starting from around midnight

Last month I played an all-night set at Nowadays in NY, which I’ve described to many friends since as probably the best DJing experience of my life. 

As a DJ you’re constantly seeking a connection with those you play to, and sometimes it’s there, sometimes not. But I have never felt so intimately close to, and in tune with, an audience – whose faces I could barely even see – for the entire duration of a night. 

I’d slept for 2 hours, was jetlagged to the point of delirium and woefully underprepared for a 9-hour set. By the last hour and a half I had a crippling stomach cramp and was falling asleep on my feet. But by some cosmic rave miracle I had somehow slipped into a groove from the beginning and found myself tracing an arc that felt like it was drawing itself, as if all I had to do was relax and watch my own hands play the music. There were moments of intensity and euphoria and nostalgia and energetic catharsis, but throughout the entire set I felt fully empowered to meander in deep, subtle and confounding directions, somehow confident that wherever I went, the dancefloor would follow. 

The final stretch descended into a nostalgic parade of old and poignant favourites which, coming out of a recent period of personal upheaval, kinda knocked me sideways and left me frequently close to tears. I was a physical and emotional wreck by the time I finished. But it was a completely magical experience from beginning to end, which felt shared in a very genuine way by everyone in the room, and honestly I don’t care if anyone would listen to a 9-hour recording these days because I just want there to be a document of the night in its entirety out there for posterity. 

So here you go – a four part recording of the whole set, hopefully conveying at least some of the joy I felt on the night. Heartfelt thanks to Nowadays and to every person who was there. ♥️

This is my 4 hour opening set from the December edition of Group Therapy in Copenhagen (@grouptherapy_cph). I was really sick in the week running up to this party and very nearly pulled out but am so glad I made it. 

The party was a world AIDS day fundraiser raising money for AIDS-Fondet and “Ungegruppen”. It was also the first party in their new venue Den Anden Side. The vibes were incredibly special and I was honoured to play the first songs in their new home. This was my love letter to everyone we lost to AIDS and a chance to play some of my most cherished records.

This mix was recorded live from Reaktor's Katharsis event in 2017.  For those that don't know, Katharsis happens once a year and is dedicated to the faster, harder and more industrial side of techno.  This was my entire 3 hour set from that night.

Over the last few years we have built a steady relationship doing events together and sharing our passion for this music.  We are teaming up once again for ADE 2018 and releasing this mix as a thank you to all our followers and supporters.
