Alessandro Adriani Presents - British Post-Punk 78-83: 25th March '25

UK based record label Weapons of Desire was born on the 30th November 2017. The brain child of three friends Alex Handley, Mick Clarke and Toni Aslam. Alex and Toni first met Mick two years before when they had a couple of Auto Sound City EPs out on Mick’s long running Flight Recorder label. 

The saying “Being around the block a few times” is an understatement when you look at the recording history of them all. Playing, making and releasing music all the way back to the 80’s (even further in Mick’s case) seemed like a natural progression when talking about a potential label and the vision they had before its creation using their recording names (Iron Blu and Auto Sound City) to make the kind of music they wanted to dance to. The ethos was and still is to release tough dancefloor publications as stated in the label description "Spinning an endless cable of steel sound".

Over the years Weapons Of Desire has released vinyl as single-sided two track hand stamped records, four track EPs, a couple of six track compilations entitled Machine Funk Vol. 1 and 2, double packs and an album. The label Is also now fully integrated with regular digital releases too.

31 releases and a total of 33 different artists, Weapons of Desire has a seat firmly at the table with more chairs added for 2025. Afterall without great music, life would most certainly be a mistake

Italian dj raised in the outskirts of Geneva, Pastram steps out under the banner of Cruel Machine Booking. Distinctly drawn towards dark atmospheres, Pastram developed a strong focus on raw rhythmics, assuming an intense form of communication where cathartic echoes and cold synths become intricate. An intense musical fusion of the past and the present transcending the line between body music, grinding post punk, industrial, and wave.

Her style is driven by the tension between the underbelly of society and the uneasy question of whether humankind is a virus or merely a vessel for its own unraveling. Informed by formative years in the 2000s American DIY and noise underground she is drawn to the grit, resolve, and outsider spirit that shape certain sounds. Her sets move through desire, grief, dissociation, and euphoria with sounds that
bypass language to states of hypnosis, dissonance, and raw physicality.

With its 10th edition, Dalmata Daniel’s split series brings together two artists who have both left their mark on the label’s compilations, now presenting their first full releases on the imprint. Anatolian Weapons and The Spy approach electronic music from different angles, one rooted in hypnotic techno rituals, the other in raw electro and post-punk energy. Both craft sounds that thrive in the shadows of the dancefloor.

On the A-side, Anatolian Weapons delivers three cold, hypnotic cuts. "Trapped" opens with heavy EBM percussion and a buzzkill bassline, setting a tense, mechanical tone. "Further Spiralling Down" sinks deeper into darkness with a grinding low end, tight drums, and electro-tinged claps, forming the side’s relentless highlight. "Apathy Through Shock" closes with pounding, catatonic rhythms and a mournful, otherworldly melody, pushing the listener into disorienting depths.

Flipping over, The Spy’s raw, electro-driven energy takes hold. "Same Blur" channels sharp electro beats with a punkish sneer and cosmic synth lines. "Falling", featuring The Spy’s own vocals, leans into melancholic new wave, pairing bouncy rhythms with bittersweet melodies. The closing "Pretending" drifts into the darkest corners, offering low-slung, haunted electro layered with distant, spectral harmonies.

A collaboration between Aphex Twin (Richard D. James) and µ–Ziq (Mike Paradinas), Mike & Rich - ’Expert Knob Twiddlers’ was made back in 1994. Richard edited the tracks into shape later in 1996 with his new Apple Mac computer and it was released later that year on Rephlex, the label he co-owned and which released the first two albums by µ-Ziq.

This new reissued version has been carefully cleaned up, re-edited and remastered from the original DAT tapes, put into a more fitting order and, more excitingly, seven new bonus tracks and alternative versions have also been added.

The album was recorded over a few days during the 1994 World Cup, back when Richard lived in a big shared flat in Stoke Newington. Richard had tried to collaborate with a few other likeminded artists but something clicked when Mike and Rich worked together and the sessions have a unique feel; playful and at times actually drunk. These are fun experiments in the spirit of lighthearted moog pop and ripe 70s British TV themes, standing out from the po-faced electronica of the time with a garish glee.

The record was made on what is now seen as pretty primitive gear - an Atari, Roland MKS-80, Memorymoog, Roland R8 and a handful of samples on a Casio FZ-10M - but it’s to their credit that it resonates well with the hardware workouts coming out today. There's a broadminded but sloppy funk to the record, even whistling, singing and harpsichord in 'Reg' and wonky beat pile-ons in 'Jelly Fish'. There's latin piano and wheezy drunken techno in ‘Vodka’, or the sleepy spaced out ambience of ‘Bu Bu Bu Ba' with its barely contained laughter which seems to reflect the absurdity. 

The new versions and bonus tracks are an absolute delight and well worth the purchase - from a trancier version of ‘Vodka' to the wonky bounce of ‘Portamento Gosh', The 3/4 dub of 'Waltz,' the banging door bass of' Brivert and Muonds', the creepy seasick atmosphere of 'Clissold Bathroom' and finishing with the strangely graceful and serious 'Organ Plodder'. A generous and welcome return to the racks.

One of the biggest surprises in the still young history of Modeselektor's Monkeytown Records was the alliance with Mouse on Mars, who released their 10th studio album "Parastrophics" after a 5 years long break this February.

The album didn't just mark the very welcome return of these legendary producers, it also meant a significant change in sound for the ever progressing Mouse on Mars. Playing with various elements of contemporary club music mixed with their trademark sound research, the now Berliners have proven to be as current and modern as ever, even almost 20 years after the release of their first album "Vulvaland" on Too Pure Records.

"They Know Your Name" featuring Dodo Nkishi is one of the stand out tracks of the album "Parastrophics". The extremely limited 7inch single contains a brand new Mouse on Mars rework on the A-Side, while the B-Side hosts a remix by Machinedrum of Merck, Planet Mu and Lucky Me fame.
