002 – USAW live

(interview & english version below)

Als zweite Ausgabe unseres Podcast präsentieren wir euch den live act USAW aus Berlin. Das Duo will ein unverwechselbares Erlebnis schaffen, ohne dabei das Hauptaugenmerk von Techno zu vernachlässigen: die Leute zum Tanzen zu bringen. Ihre Releases erschienen bei OECUS sowie bei Suara und ARTS. Das Liveset wurde am 31.05.2024 im OHM Berlin bei der ‚Kind Intimate Sound Session‘ (KISS) aufgenommen.


INTERVIEW
Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt und beschlossen, gemeinsam Musik zu machen?

Wir sind in unserer Heimatstadt in Italien in denselben Club zum Tanzen gegangen. Von da an wurden wir Brüder, das ist mehr als 10 Jahre her. Als Lawrence 2021 für die Sommerpause nach Italien zurückkehrte, trafen wir uns wieder und gingen in Giuse's Studio, um zu jammen und einen Nachmittag zusammen zu verbringen. 
Am Ende des Tages waren wir beide der Meinung: „Ja, das funktioniert, es muss passieren, und zwar jetzt“.

Wie plant ihr eure Live-Sets? Gibt es einen festen Ablauf oder improvisiert ihr viel?

Ein bisschen von beidem. Wir sind uns bewusst, dass unsere Tracks eine gewisse Wirkung auf den Dancefloor haben. Also nehmen wir sie auseinander (Bass, Kick, Melodien, MIDIs, etc.), vereinfachen sie und stellen sie live nach. Daraus schöpfen wir die meisten Teile unserer Sets. Zusätzlich gehen wir auch einfach mit dem Flow und improvisieren mit unseren Hardware-Synths.

Gibt es besondere Momente oder gemeinsame Erlebnisse, die eure Zusammenarbeit geprägt haben?

Auf jeden Fall das erste Mal, als wir zusammen live gespielt haben. Nachdem wir fertig waren und auf den Stopp-Knopf gedrückt haben, hatten wir beide einen Moment der Erkenntnis, in dem wir dachten „Moment mal, das ist wirklich passiert!“. Vor allem, weil die Idee, ein Live-Set zu machen, in einer Zeitspanne von etwa 2 Wochen überlegt und umgesetzt wurde. Wir wussten einfach, dass dies die Richtung war, die wir einschlagen mussten, also haben wir uns voll und ganz in die Vorbereitung des Sets gestürzt und uns selbst gepushed, es zu verwirklichen.

As the second edition of our podcast, we present you the live act USAW from Berlin. The duo aims to create a distinctive experience without neglecting techno's main focus: to make people dance. Their releases were published on OECUS, followed by Suara and ARTS. The live set was recorded on 31 May 2024 at the OHM Berlin at the ‘Kind Intimate Sound Session’ (KISS).


INTERVIEW
How did you get to know each other and decide to make music together?

We used to go dancing at the same club in our hometown in Italy. From there on we became brothers, that’s more than 10 years ago. In 2021 when Lawrence went back to Italy for the summer break we met again and we went to Giuse’s studio just to jam and to spend an afternoon together. 
At the end of the day we both were like “yeah this works, it needs to happen and it needs to happen now”.

How do you plan your live sets? Is there a set schedule or do you improvise a lot?

A little bit of both. We are aware that our productions have a certain impact on the dancefloor. So we strip them down (Bass, Kick, Melodie, MIDIs, etc.) and recreate them live. Then we have most parts of our sets in which we just go with the flow and we improvise with the hardware synths that we have.

Are there any special moments or shared experiences that have characterised your collaboration?

Definitely the first time we played live together. After we were done and we hit the stop button we both had a moment of realization where we both were like “wait a second, this really, really happened!”, especially because the idea of doing a live set was conceived and realized in a time span of roughly 2 weeks. We just knew it was the direction we had to take so we fully immersed in the preparation of the set and pushed ourselves to make it happen.

Release day!

This eleventh podcast of the Elata Series features michael ius, a Romanian artist, a classical guitarist who turned into a techno producer.
He started producing techno in 2019 and developed his sound through constant experimentation.
Now, with releases on Maloer Records, WSNWGBTZ, OUT OF PLACE, SYXT, Duplicity, and his own IUS series on Bandcamp, he is supported by underground artists and labels.

We are extremely happy to have Michael on our Series. When we discovered his music, we directly felt a special connection with what we want to express and played countless of his tracks during our different events. We also had the chance to meet him and we discovered a lovely human on top of a very talented producer and we are sure we will have much ore collaboration in the future.

TRYCK is a DJ & producer based in Berlin. As a member of Oxytocin Berlin, a collective dedicated to hard techno and trance, he is known for his distinctive focus on groove-driven sounds with a particular passion for hardgroove music. He has played at renowned Berlin venues such as Re:mise, Oxi, and ://about blank. He has also performed at events both within and beyond the city. His main inspiration comes from early 90s and 00s techno, especially from artists like Regis, Surgeon, Luke Slater, Remco Beekwilder, Lars Klein and Robert Natus. In addition to his label work and solo productions, TRYCK is also one half of the duo project ‘Ultraflash’. Above all, he values groovy and hypnotic sounds that create a driving momentum, inviting listeners to lose themselves on the dancefloor.
