art:cast °115 | Steffan Todorović

One of the thriving forces of the northern European electronic music scene, it's Steffan Todorović who is lined-up next for the art:cast series. As the founder and co-founder of Gestalt Records respectively Coymix Ltd, which Steffan runs with Timo Deeprhythms, the artist lets followers of the arts discover aspiring and renowned artists from the scene. It looks differently when it comes to his production project Abdul Raeva, where he specifically shares his own vision and approach of music together with his partner in crime Joonas, also known as Rashida Prime. The latest output was a contribution of the duo to Mint Tea's V/A Basic Contact alongside artists such as Zobol, Boulderhead and Toke and a track for Gestalt Records anniversary sampler, while in 2020 Steffan released music on Neptune Discs or Dance All Day Records among and others. Whether or not there's more music to come this year, the present has Steffan mixing and compiling a flawless art:cast covering fresh, older and upcoming bits of music viscerally put together to make you move through time and space, to get lost in the pads and stomp to lush bass lines.

🇫🇷 Maelita n'en est pas à son premier coup d'essai musical puisque c'est à 7 ans qu'elle commence la musique en tant que pianiste.
Une dizaine d'années plus tard, c'est derrière les platines qu'on la retrouve avec la volonté de casser les genres en proposant des sets toujours variés et éclectiques. Un seul but, déconstruire les idéaux afin de partager son amour de la musique.
Elle fait ses armes dans des endroits comme l'ampérage et la belle électrique à Grenoble aux côtés d'artistes comme Lena Willikens et 0ptimo. 
C'est désormais à Lyon qu'elle opère, ville qui l'inspire par ses multiples influences. Elle a rejoint depuis peu l'écurie Everybody Trance où elle peut manifester son style musical qui oscille entre break trance ou encore acid.

🇬🇧 Maelita isn’t new to the scene; she started playing music at 7 as a pianist. Years later, she now operates behind the decks, with a will to break from conventions by putting together versatile and unexpected sets. Her main goal is to deconstruct common ideals through her love for music.
She started out in places like l’Ampérage and the Belle Electrique in Grenoble alongside artists such as Lena Wilikens or Optimo. She’s now based in Lyon, a bustling city that inspires her. 
She’s now with the Everybody Trance crew, with which she can express her style as freely as possible, oscillating between breaks, trance and even acid.

Despite productions appearing here and there since 2015, Yuzo Iwata has kept a relatively low output. Contributing tracks to compilations and releasing singles under aliases Fabio Lazaro and Almost East, Iwata is also affiliated with Junki Inoue’s recent SAISEI label, editing pioneering early Japanese techno from the likes of Suzukiski and COLOGNe for rerelease.After ‘Acid House’ appeared on the Butter Sessions Come Together 12” in 2020, the label now play host to Yuzo Iwata’s first ever full length. The 10 tracks span a wide variety of tempos and show a consistent approach to unusual sound design first evidenced in Iwata’s RA Mix of the Day for Clubberia (100% originals recorded circa 2017).

Kaizu unfolds with dense environmental ambient textures before ‘Neverland’ takes us into broken dancehall rhythms and acid-tinged dub. ‘Funclub’ is reminiscent of Japanese video game soundtracks and 80s fusion whilst further into Side A the balearic energy continues to captivate, closing with the beautiful ‘Heroes Show Up Late’. This short piece is built around a looping vocal sample and shuffling drum work that all come together perfectly. There’s even a trace of Brazilian MPB influence at play with the vocal/synth interplay. It’s Iwata’s knack for percussion that is most evident across the album however, with Side B opening cut ‘Gamelion’ taking an Indonesian inspired approach to modern techno. It runs in a similar vein to Komodo Kolektif’s work and might be the dancefloor highlight of the whole LP. ‘Sundance’ follows with more Japanese motifs, recalling Haruomi Hosono’s F.O.E project. Another strong rhythmic workout suited to the floor. The environmental ambient textures return with the closing piece ‘Time 2 L’, strings, bird calls and droning synthesiser winding down the proceedings. Letting us know it’s time 2 leave?

🇬🇧  Resident on the amazing Lyl Radio, Lyon native Salma Rosa dips into jazz, downtempo, tribal, psychedelic rock and krautrock influences to build a universe that sounds like her. 

With a deep and finely selected bag of records, she creates unique adventures to take the listener along with her. However, she is as versatile as it gets: she knows how to select only the best records and moves freely between bass music, rave and acid sounds, to bring the club up to maximum temperature.
