Exploring Morn 2-19

Experimenting with the mix, tried a few things here and there and I like where this mix is headed. I also tried to use a VST ampsim called Emissary by Ignite Amps instead of the POD and I must say, this is the best amp simulator I have heard so far. I usually need to do a bit of pre EQ and use stomps before the amp because my guitar lacks bite but I didn't need any of this with this amp. What you hear is the guitar straight into the amp, straight into the cab which is quite impressive.

The song is an old quickie I wrote a few years ago when I tried to make Superior Drummer presets, no idea what the idea means anymore and it is nothing groundbreaking at all but it was fun to play!

Growing up in Portland, OR Nathaniel is highly influenced by his environment as it manifests itself through nature and urban landscapes. Creative inspiration is also realized through a highly spiritualized upbringing, and his obsessive fascination with the minuscule and seemingly meaningless observations of his present domain. This immense satisfaction with the mundane affords him the ability to visualize and conceptualize in ways others may consider unconventional. When not working in the sonic medium or managing the logistical demandings of Blankstairs Nathaniel works as a photographer.

*Note from the host: Some shows don't go your way - maybe technology isn't on your side or sometimes you just don't have the stuff. For me, this was one of these shows. Perhaps it was something in the L.A. tap water? The barometric pressure? Maybe the state of the world had me down and messed with my focus? I don't know for sure. One thing I do know is that musicians like @au-teurist lift my spirits and give me hope that no matter how many mistakes I make during a 2-hour radio program, there will always be 30 minutes of gold. I'm grateful to have those 30 minutes to count on. 

In a series of extremely unfortunate events, the recording of last night's program has been lost forever. Luckily, we still have the mix file on hand which will suffice for this week's upload.

Blankstairs is thrilled to announce its newest release, Dream City’s Forward, a collaboration between S. Deelay and C. Perez (head of PDX’s consistently innovative Pastel Voids imprint).

The project marks an impressively focused exchange for the pair, mixing the deep atmospherics of Perez’s Metropol project with the raw eclecticism and crate-digging expertise of Deelay’s Insane Deelay handle.  Having first met several years prior in Portland, the pair has collaborated on and off for several years, including a 2014 release on Pastel Voids, a throbbing, smoke-stained cassette that charted fertile ground for future work.  Since then, the pair has followed their respective paths on opposite sides of the Atlantic in recent years, while maintaining a fertile dialogue between their evolving styles and musical vocabularies, one that sees a natural point of convergence on "Forward". 

The record serves as an exercise between each artist’s honed approach to both DJ’ing and live production, twisting the grooves and functionality of classic jack tracks and bass tunes through a haze of processed electronics and swirling, multi-textured arrangements.  Lead cut, "Down 2", for instance, spins fragments of classic Chicago acid through an abstracted cloud of synth swells and pulsing bass, while "Hopeful Visions" slows the pace down, allowing snippets of chopped vocal sampling and swirling pads to pair off against a thudding main figure.  These are workouts exploring both patience and density, drawing on the pair’s sense of development and progression to create engrossing, evolving final products that mark a fittingly deep expansion of the pair's ongoing collaboration, and each artist's solo work in turn.

The record features four tracks from the project, alongside a properly misted out, deconstructed re-work of "Hopeful Visions" by Max McFerren, and an added, digital-only bonus featuring Perez’s Metropol take on "Down 2".

I despise electric guitars and yelling or mumbling nonsense. I've got a small weak spot for dubstepish whatnot somewhere in my left thigh. 
I try to spend my life doing whatever I enjoy. Often to great excess. I try not to work. I try not to need crap. I try not to let my mind float away.
I whistle. I sing while I walk but that is as far as I go. I spend obscene time sifting through my music database and the web looking for something fresh and good feeling to drip into my ears.
