Unexpectedly inspired by Balenciaga’s 1950s Empire Line – an iconic collection of womenswear – the Scandinavian duo of Jonas Rönnberg (AKA Northern Electronics artist Varg) and Christian Stadsgaard (half of Damien Dubrovnik and co-founder of the Posh Isolation label) have created a brittle winter series of textured drones and crystallized noise. On January 23, the Empire Line will release their first EP via Shifted's Avian label, featuring the icy, abstract "Jewelry Armoire." The track debuted on Discreet Music, our weekly exploration of experimental music.

Roll the Dice "Cannonball" [First Floor Premiere]

A leading light of Shanghai’s musical underground for years, RBMA alumni ChaCha presents ‘Moon Mad’, her first album as Faded Ghost. Not only in name does Faded Ghost immediately call up associations with hauntology – the album revels in the kind of nostalgia for lost futures pioneered musically by Burial in the early 2000s. On “Lunatic Romance”, which we’re premiering here, the forlorn, smeared vocal snippets emerge as shadows behind menacing synth growls and thin layers of noisy crackling. About a third into the song, the ghostly remnants of a dubby bass line emerge, which seems to signal either comfort or impending doom – depending on which way the moonlight shines on it.

Faded Ghost’s ‘Moon Mad’ LP is out soon on June 9th via SVBKVLT.

Ever since graduating from the Red Bull Music Academy 2014 in Tokyo, Turkish sound artist Ipek Gorgun has been refining her craft consistently. Following her first solo LP, ‘Aphelion’ and her collaborative album with Ceramic TL (Egyptrixx), ‘Perfect Lung,’ ‘Ecce Homo’ marks the next step in her impressive development. The album arrives via Touch, the UK electronic and experimental powerhouse known for releases by Ryoji Ikeda, Biosphere, Phil Niblock and Hildur Guðnadóttir, to name but a few. Currently enrolled in a doctoral program of Sonic Arts in Istanbul, Gorgun and her head-spinning compositions slot right in with the label’s trailblazing talent and “Tserin Dopchut” proves the point: Washes of sound envelop the listener from all angles, conjuring an evocative universe of pleasure and pain.
