Monolith

Second piece of three movements for new music ensemble, three singers and electronic backing (at 120bpm). This piece was submitted to the BBC inspire competition in 2015 and received a "highly commended" status.

CD: 60 SECONDS.

BA: Lights on. Down 2 and a half. Forward. Forward. Good. 40 feet down, 2	 and a half, kicking up some dust. 30 feet, 2 and a half down. Faint 	shadow. 4 forward. 4 forward, drifting to the right a little. Okay. Down a half.

CD: 30 SECONDS.

NA: Forward drift? 

BA: Yes. Okay? CONTACT LIGHT. Okay, ENGINE STOP. ACA – out of DETENT. 

NA:  Out of DETENT. 	
MODE CONTROL – both AUTO. DESCENT ENGINE COMMAND      OVERRIDE – OFF. ENGINE ARM – OFF. 413 is in.

CD: We copy you down, Eagle.

NA: Houston, uh, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.

CD: Roger, Tranquility. We copy y’all on the ground. You’ve got a bunch of 	guys about to turn blue, we’re breathing again. Thanks a lot.

II. the eagle has landed

The first piece of three movements for new music ensemble, three singers and electronic backing (at 120bpm).

"We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people. For space science, like nuclear science and all technology, has no conscience of its own. Whether it will become a force for good or ill depends on man, and only if the United States occupies a position of pre-eminence can we help decide whether this new ocean will be a sea of peace or a new terrifying theater of war. I do not say that we should or will go unprotected against the hostile misuse of space any more than we go unprotected against the hostile use of land or sea, but I do say that space can be explored and mastered without feeding the fires of war, without repeating the mistakes that man has made in extending his writ around this globe of ours. 

There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet.

Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation may never come again. But why, some say the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?

Recorded at the SAM Summer School 2015, a five-day composition course in the Purcell School. On the first day, our group was given some advice on how to start a new piece. One of these pieces of advice was as follows:

"Don't be afraid to change time signatures or explore various keys. All too often, we get stuck in one time and don't move away from one or two chords."

Taking this to heart, this piece changes keys 48 times and has 33 shifts in time signature. The starting and ending melodies on the cello are made from the tonics of the chord sequence that follows.

This is an old recording of the first piece I ever wrote, performed live, in Wells Cathedral.

15 year old FL Studio composer, I make stuff for myself and for several small Roblox games.

 I like to make weird music, and I’m inspired by Oliver Buckland, Graham Kartna, and Machine Girl.

 I’ve been teaching myself how to compose for about a year now, and I’d say it’s been pretty successful, though i’m lacking some key elements and high quality VSTs, since i don’t own any real instruments. I’d like to make things with more realistic sounding classical instruments or just piano if i had them.

 I do not use AI and I will not use AI.
