This episode considers the implications of the rise of state-sponsored fake news and disinformation for international images.  Simon takes the line that the exaggerations of nation branding are on a continuum with all-out lies of malicious propaganda. He calls for better research on public responses to nations using distortion.  Does it demonstrably damage reputations? Nick argues that state sponsorship of objective news can be an important component of Soft Power as the BBC is an asset for the UK.  He considers the history of this and the ways in our own time by which states are learning to blunt the kind of disruptive media onslaught of the kind deployed by Russia in 2014.  He cites the British response to the Skripal case of 2018 and the effective use of so-called 'pre-bunking' strategies in the run up to Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.  Simon worries that the loss of confidence in news undermines the whole notion of things being knowable and plays into Russian hands which prompts Nick to stress the importance not merely of single state sponsored sources of objective news like the BBC but of building free media broadly to create multiple sources of credible news at a community level.  The conversation ends with agreement that education is the answer and the perhaps our age of disinformation is a necessary wakeup call for a better future.

Reality Check (from New Space Project album)

I decided to hook up an old casio CZ-101 keyboard to my iPad to utilize the fx (as the cz-101 has no reverb etc) and decided to create a composition inside of Auria. I started with Audiobus and put the cz as in the input and the Master FX in the FX slot and used a reverb preset for all three tracks. I created all three patches from scratch.  That's half the fun of this keyboard. You can combine wave forms etc . I recorded the song in Auria and only used the PSP Micro Warmer for mastering the mix and that was it. Uploaded it to soundcloud.

Restitution ***ALL CASIO CZ-101*** Maria Calfa-DePaul

I wanted to do a composition with the cz-101 that demonstrated that the cz can do traditional instruments; not just the sci fi "synthy sounds" which I love but not for every song!! I used two presets. The Flute and the String Ensemble. HOWEVER, I ran then in audiobus as the input and put Harmony Voice on the Flute in the FX slot and put Master FX in the FX spot for the Strings. I actually recorded the flute and the drum jam rhythm track at the same time. (using the audiobus lanes ) I then played the free style drums in drum jam over the first drum track and then I added the second melody which is the string track. I used WOW on one drum jam track and Tornado on the other drum jam track to beef them up. I then mixed it using the PSP MicroWarmer and then audio copied it into Audio Mastering. I used the Easy Listening Preset but reduced the input as it was a bit hot. Then I added some compression. I then uploaded to soundcloud.

Midnight CZzzzzzzzz's ****Casio Cz-101 and Drum Jam**** Maria Calfa-DePaul

I wrote this composition entirely on the Casio CZ-101 Synth
I used only patches that I created. Some were created using the wonderful app called CZ-Touch by app developer Chadwick Wood.
I used my Apogee jam to go from the CASIO line out to the in of the iPad via the lightning adaptor. I used my iPad mini2 and Auria to record the music. I then audio copy and pasted the mix into Audio Mastering another wonderful app by Igor Vasiliev. I uploaded the final song directly from there to soundcloud.  The only fx I used was the convolution reverb in auria and the PSP microwarmer for the mix before going into Mastering. Thanks for listening.

Just fun for fun. My  children (age 6,8 and 12) love to impersonate daleks (Mmmm). And well fun for fun I recorded them and tried to find an as close as possible way to have their voice 'dalekified'. It really scares my cat !

Juste pour rire. Mes enfants (6,8 et 12 ans) adorent jouer au Daleks (Duh...). Et fun pour fun, j'ai essayé de reproduire au mieux les traitements d'une voix dalekifiée sur les leurs. Ca fait flipper mon chat.
