The Sustain Series project continues with its second volume, 24 recycled forms created from old and unused material. Since the release of Volume 1 in November last year, more artists have come together to salvage, repurpose, restore and deconstruct each other’s pieces, or collaborate on a particular idea. What results is a growing variety of approaches and outputs, from minor embellishments to full disfigurement.

Volume 2 moves thematically, as if in four chapters, from the expressive openers, through enchanting natural-sounding pieces, before opening up to more ethereal expanses, and finally darker and more thoughtful ones. As it does, visions emerge of our natural world - its power, its beauty and its vulnerability.

Postcard 37 comes from anthéne. Also known as one half of North Atlantic Drift, Toronto based Brad Deschamps who has been putting out sublime drones on the likes of Sound in Silence, Assembly Field, Catherdral Transmissions and Polar Seas. On Colour Fields, time seems to stop altogether as fragments of guitar and keyboards meld into a drifting placid mass that shimmers throughout the duration of the entire EP.  Colour Fields has been beautifully mastered by Ian Hawgood.

Each release will come in a hand printed sleeve on recycled card with original artwork by Katie English who has been doing all the recent Rural Colours sleeves.

"In this decade, I visited many places in order to record organic sounds such as, rare bird voices and sounds of waves (I live in the basin area far from sea). There is a river near my house and I often visit there to record, or merely walk. When I recorded in the early morning hours at that riverside for ‘Under the Morning Mist’, the body of water was beautifully wrapped with a dense mist. A gorgeous backdrop and inspiration for this arrangement. 


A park located in the city where I reside, was the inspiration for the arrangement, 'In This Perfect Dream'. The captured sounds of trees, leaves, and the winds.. All beautiful sounds around me that we typically take for granted. I got lost in time, it felt like a perfect dream, hence the title of this arrangement."

I made this short collection of microsound collages in the early hours of the morning before work. They began to take on a restful dream-like quality which I enhanced by imagining nocturnal scenes, cave systems, caverns, islands, and night skies. The title of the EP makes a tentative reference to Aldous Huxley’s Utopian classic ‘The Island’. I hope that the listener, too is transported to imaginary places of their own and feels rested by this music.

Hotel Neon is a trio from Philadelphia, which has appeared on these pages [and hopefully on your rotations] ever since their self-released and self-titled Hotel Neon debut in 2013. The album has been subsequently picked up by Home Normal, with the band’s followups, Remnants (2016) and Context (2017) appearing on Fluid Audio, and migration with Means of Knowing (2018) to Augustin Mena’s (aka Warmth) Archives imprint. For their latest release, titled Vanishing Forms, the trio returns to Archives, with eight ambient atmospheres that blanket a spinning mind. The vastly spanning and highly textured pieces drown all anguish and polish the sharp edges of that troublesome thought. 

Listening to this music is like opening your eyes on the beach facing a boundless ocean, with an intense realization that at this moment all is real and everything else is just product of a projected and forever fueled in worry ego. This is how things truly are… And if you don’t have the luxury of an ocean near your dwelling, at least you can reflect on the presence in your headphones, with Hotel Neon spraying all the vapours of their waves.

The album will be available for pre-order this Friday (April 12th), available on digital, CD, and of course, vinyl. You may have already noticed in the above Release Notes section, but it’s worth pointing out again the mastering touch of Rafael Anton Irisarri from his Black Knoll Studio in New York. Hotel Neon is setting out on tour for the album premiere events, which also include performances by Lowercase Noises and Slow Meadow!
