Die U-Bahn-Station am Times Square in New York gehört zu den meist frequentierten Stationen der Stadt. Der Berliner Musiker Andreas LUPO Lubich hat diesen Ort mit einem erstklassigen Mikrofon erkundet.

Die Wahrnehmung der eigenen Umgebung verändert sich deutlich, wenn man mit verbundenen Augen durch die Gegend geführt wird. Man nimmt dann auch die Geräusche wahr, die eigentlich nicht so wichtig sind und daher normalerweise vom Gehirn weggefiltert werden.

Aufnahme von 1999
Eine ähnliche Erfahrung lässt sich machen, wenn man eine Stadt mit Mikrofon und Kopfhörer erkundet – am besten eine, die man nicht kennt. Man beginnt genauer zu hören und die eigene Position im Raum mit den Geräuschen der Umgebung abzugleichen.

Als der Berliner Musiker und Mastering-Engineer Andreas LUPO Lubich im Mai 1999 nach New York reiste, hatte er sich ein schön klingendes Mikrofon ausgeliehen. Er bewegte sich damit durch die Stadt und landete auch in der U-Bahn Station am Times Square, wo ein Großteil der Welt jeden Tag aufs Neue zusammenkommt.

Mitten drin ein Saxofon
Dort rattern die Züge laut und roh in den Bahnhof, jemand spielt selbstvergessen mit seinem Basketball und wahrscheinlich sitzt irgendwo noch einer, der sich gerade die Fingernägel schneidet. Sogar ein Saxofonspieler, der Stücke spielt, die man schon viel zu oft gehört hat, ist in so einem Setting zu ertragen. Und obwohl der Musikant mit seinem Instrument fast die ganze Zeit zu hören ist, dominiert er die Aufnahme nicht, sondern bleibt nur ein Teil des gesamten Bildes.

Traditionally a real-time improviser, Thorn applies the same method here: live improvisation, spontaneous structure-building, and experimental mélanges of violin and code. Many of its foggy textures derive from Haze, a tool he developed for generating densely patterned lo-fi soundscapes.

A sonic memoir imbued with violin and experimental code, a curious doubling of terms begins at the churning waters of Necarney Creek merging with the Pacific. Unfolding from pure lyricism into machinic textures, the music summons the verdant twilight of the primeval forest and the glow of the city lights it ad-umbrates. The machinic is both refuge and trial in this work, though the final word is the fracturing, hard-driven logic-become-logistics that may signal a morbid dénouement.

Seth Thorn - What Lies Before

Refraction and Reflection has taken field recordings and synthesizer sounds and processed them in various ways to alter and reconstruct the original. Some of the sounds present are complexly processed recordings, retaining none of their original qualities, others are delicate noise, and then there are those which recreate the sounds of nature, such as that of treading on snow or tree branches, or the call of a bird. There are truly a great variety of sounds utilized. In this album, I tried to bring into harmony both the tactile and the deeply spiritual aspects of sound.

The new album ‘Object Models’ has taken a broad, yet calculated approach to both the sound and composition of its elements. While retaining much of the pop-music track length credo of ‘Let’s be Happy', the spacing between parts has become less structured, focusing more on the breathability of track in full. Never fully silent, there is now just as much focus on the quiet parts as the loud.

While a few of these pieces are about prior and current neurological
experiences, the overall focus of ‘Object Models’ is pinpointed on
personality changes due to neurological damage. Socially, having to appear the same while old versions of the original are worn-out photocopies; a card-catalogue. The dusty Rolodex®. Which 'face' to choose in which social situation, and the occasional errors; a misplaced index card.
