Offthesky - Dying Within Dreams

After decades of chasing, accumulating, and then sharing new music with you, I think I've hit some saturation point. I think I'm done spinning in the vortex of the "new", being pulled in all directions, catching up on all the "fresh" and "innovative" tracks. I'm not saying that I will stop covering new music. No. But I think I'll focus the virtual lens of my listening on a very narrow point, investing my time and attention over more extended periods. I think I will turn inwards... towards music and the artists that genuinely make me feel. This is the case with Rafael Anton Irisarri's A Fragile Geography, an album from 2015, which captured my attention then as it does now, triggering memories, triggering thoughts, and emotion. A decade ago, during a move between coasts, Rafael lost his possessions - stolen with the moving truck - along with all his audio archives, forcing him to rebuild his studio and sound from the ground up. The pain of this loss is reflected in almost every single track on the album. This music is slightly dark and melancholic. It's visceral, and it gets under your skin. And there it stays with you for ages. Becoming part of you, becoming part of your existence.

On September 19th, the album will be reissued, beautifully remastered by Stephan Mathieu at his Schwebung studio, along with a limited edition cassette of remixes by the most renowned artists, handpicked by Rafael. "This record has always been about letting go of one life and rebuilding another", says Irisarri, "It feels fitting to return to it now - ten years later, in a different country, a different world." These reworks are worthy of your precious awareness as well. I know that there are more than a few in the pipeline (at least six), which will be revealed one at a time. As of this writing, there is already a gorgeous rework by the one and only William Basinski, with his version of "Secretly Wishing For Rain" with Gary Thomas Wright, which incorporates field recordings of Reseda rain and birds captured by Basinski himself. You can check out a digital stream of that track here. *BUT!* Today, I am premiering for you a second rework by Abul Mogard! This piece bears not only the original elements of "Persistence" but, of course, Guido's extremely personal touch that breathes new life into this sound.

Seabuckthorn - Black Boar

David Cordero is an artist based in San Fernando, Cádiz, on the southern coast of Spain. His work has appeared on many of the Ambient scene’s favourite labels including Home Normal, Dronarivm, Archives, Polar Seas, and Past Inside The Present, among others. He also released ‘Restless Nature’ on Whitelabrecs back in 2024. Having made music since his teens, David began releasing solo material in 2016 after years spent performing as part of a Post Rock band. His music draws inspiration from Ambient pioneers such as Brian Eno and Steve Roach, as well as the Japanese school of minimalism led by the likes of Satoshi Ashikawa and Hiroshi Yoshimura. Nature and everyday life play a central role in his compositions, which are crafted through long hours of experimentation in his home studio. A curator of Ambient and experimental music events in Spain, David remains deeply engaged in fostering the scene while continuing to explore new sonic ideas.

Anthéne is the project of Toronto-based musician Brad Deschamps, who has been releasing music since 2015. Known for his hushed, melodic guitar-based soundscapes, Brad has released on respected imprints such as Home Normal, Oscarson, and Past Inside The Present, as well as through his own label, Polar Seas Recordings. His influences span from the spacious, slow-moving worlds of Stars of the Lid to the delicate intimacy of Julie Byrne, with a constant leaning toward minimalism and melody. In addition to his solo work, Brad is an active collaborator, creating music as Rosales (with Ian Hawgood) and Citrine (with Phoebe Dubar), among other projects.

Their second full-length collaboration is called ‘Let One Bird Sing’ and follows 2023’s ‘Lost Under The Sea’ on the Home Normal label. The two artists began by patiently exchanging small musical sketches, allowing each to build upon and reshape the ideas in their own way. Layers of guitar, modular tones and textures were gradually woven together into a seamless whole. It was an unhurried process where space and subtlety were as important as melody. Both artists have a deep respect for detail and restraint, and this shared affinity is evident throughout this album.
Brad was inspired to choose the album’s title based on a line in a poem by Faiz Ahmad Faiz, which speaks to a hope for freedom. This is something Brad connected not only to humanity but also to the natural world. The pieces on ‘Let One Bird Sing’ carry a sense of openness and quiet reverence for nature, reflected in their unforced, drifting structures and gentle interplay of tones. The artist’s intention was to create a space for calm and reflection, inviting either attentive listening or moments of stillness and detachment.

Following in the tracks of Musique de Film I & Musique de Film II, Ümlaut’s new album, Musique de Film III, continues to explore the relationship between sound and vision. As a point of departure, this album presents a new creative direction in the evolution Ümlaut’s unique world. Each of the twelve audio and video tracks were created individually and simultaneously, with an overarching theme of perpetual geographies in mind. While the titles impart hints as to a song’s inherent meaning, room is left for listeners to discover their own interpretations. Simplicity is the key. For maximum sensual impact, songs are stripped down their essentials. Nothing is superfluous. The sound is futuristic, yet immediate, where being in the moment yields rewards. A palette of atmospheric colours and spectral harmonics lures the listener into a peaceful dimension of silence and harmony, where delicate field recordings and distorted textures are threaded with warmth.
