Study 10 - Chillingham Manor

The Chase

Held in the brig for 40 days, he senses the crew's apprehension. They behave erratically as the storm strengthens. His bruised and sweaty hands are slowly slipping from the manacles. On deck, Captain Redbane scans the green black sky, and inspires a long draught of the salty air, tinged with the smell of ions. As he inhales, he realizes his imminent demise at the hands of the cruel and thoughtless sea. His eyes meet the onslaught of water; the physical laws of the world mean nothing as the storm grows in intensity and an 80 foot wave slams the ship broadside. Relentlessly the ocean devours the boat and it's crew.
A powerful blast of lightening rends the boat in twain as our hero is thrust against the metal bars in the brig. A final strike from the waves jettisons him from the boat altogether and slamming into the cold blackness, he is rendered unconscious.

A limp and sunburned body floats past a buoy in the harbor of Innisfree. In our hero's mind whirls a cacophonous mixture of sights and sounds. He remembers his journey, his wife, his companions, The Jewel of King Askota; all lost. Slowly, a swirling mass of torn clothes and hair comes to rest in a tidal pool. A fisherman's son comes to lean over the curious flotsam, discovers it is shallowly breathing...there may still be time to save him...

The Death of Captain Redbane/Escape/Awashed on the Shores of Innisfree

The day after the funeral, the child was awake before everyone, and had begun to establish contact with his recently deceased grandmother. Outside, the birds acknowledged the grey dawn. In front of him lay the gutted remains of a 40 channel mobile CB radio, a soldering iron, green, red, and black wires, a clamp-on ammeter, coiled up coax, and an off-white saucer sprinkled with crumbs and 2 remaining sugar cookies. The child was sitting on his knees in a gardeners position, earnestly turning the RF gain in conjunction with the squelch control. In static colored visions, he heard himself travel outside of his parent's home, up into the sky and further into the ionosphere where electricity traveled unencumbered and reached all the way around the Earth. He whizzed by planets and brushed by comets and gravely nodded to event horizons surrounding sightless black holes, which he knew emptied themselves out into white holes in alternate universes. His grandmother had always loved his imagination, and now he was using it to reach out to her, to make contact with her, to establish a link and a connection, to ensure that there really was a destination at the end of our travels through life. In the end however, he only heard static.
