Audio Social is proud to bring you the 9th instalment of the series. Brought to you by a Nelson kween - Mews! 

From the forests of the west coast of BC Mews was raised in the paws of festival culture, electronic and folk festivals alike. Being exposed to all types of music from around the world from a young age ignited her passion for DJ’ing. 

She has since refined her own sound. Largely influenced by all types of bass music, predominantly coming from the UK along with r’n’b, hiphop, downtempo and nostalgic dance floor anthems from her youth. You can count on her to get your body moving.

Now you can find her nestled in the mountains of Nelson BC playing at restaurants and clubs, while patiently awaiting the return of music festivals.

Audio Social is beyond excited to bring you the 10th installment of our mix series. Featuring the Worst Behaviour Kween and Bass Coast alumni - Anna Morgan! 

Anna describes her inspiration for this mix as music that makes her shake her ass (get it girrrl) & nostalgia for her found BC rave memories @bass-c0ast

ANNA MORGAN is a tastemaker and connoisseur of globally minded low-end frequencies. Raised by Jamaican's in the Bronx, she found the rave community and it set her soul free, she aspires to bring that freedom to each dance floor she has the opportunity of sharing music with. Known for her eclectic high energy sets, genre fluid productions and dedication to breaking in new sounds, she has been quickly building an international community as fun and diverse as her style. As a curator and writer for the footwork jungle blog, she is an evangelist for 160bpm bass music. As a DJ, producer, label head and promoter she highlights urban diasporic stories by sharing her journey and the work of her community. She has been a regular on international festival lineups such as Outlook, Bass Coast, Lightning in a Bottle, and Shambhala. Her sets notably push rhythmic boundaries, while remaining dancefloor accessible. Her work has been covered by DJ Mag, Mixmag, Resident Advisor, Fact Mag,and her Label  Worst Behavior Recs was named by DJ Mag as one of the labels to watch in 2020. Her recent women's day mix was named mix of the day by Resident Advisor.

A true Kootenay local, Mraki [mer-aw-kee] is a passionate multi-talented mixed Indigenous queer artist. You can find her at shows playing a wide range of selections from hip-hop, rnb & afrobeat. To liquid dnb, dub, bass & contemporary sounds. Although this selectress has only been mixing for a few years, she has been dedicated to contributing & cultivating a prober vibe long before her step up to the decks. Whether it’s throwing a monthly hip-hop night, starting her own radio show, or strumming on her ukulele, Mraki has a genuine heart for the love of sharing & creating music in all mediums. 

This mix is special and is not only an extension of her heart but a jump of faith.
The music she chooses to share, listen to, or make, is just an extension of herself. It’s a part of her spirit. Mraki reminds us to not let the fear of not being good enough, stop us from sharing music with others. Her mix is healing not only for herself but for those who listen. Audio Social is elated to be featuring the selector and our good friend Mandai. She’s been a supporter and huge inspiration to the crew over the years! And we can’t think of a better person to celebrate and host for the one year mix series then this bass queen herself! This mix is packed with heaters ready to warm your pre rave or night out now that we can do so again! This mix is full of bassy goodness, including global, dancehall, grime, rap riddims ready to bun out dem’ speakers for a late summer boom turn up!

This bad gyal remains a staple in the west coast’s underground music scene as a consistently evolving local favorite. Mandai is a well-known member of Vancouver’s notorious Lighta! Crew, having acquired her inspiration from the bass scene of the early 2000s combined with Caribbean sound system music and culture that captured her soul. From digging through crates of vinyl to sourcing intimate and forward-pushing sounds, she stays true to her heart when creating a vibe. Her curations have expanded through the years and weave through genres that span continents. She is alumni to some of the best events such as Bass Coast, Shambhala, Diversity, The Field, LIB, Symbiosis’s Oregon Eclipse, and Vancouver’s infamous Ting!

For Audio Social Mix 015 we hand over the decks to Ultima Esuna. Recently making the move from Vancouver to Montreal, she made a big impression on the local scene here in a short amount of time. Her sets are always thoughtful and adventurous, and this one is no exception. Working her way from chill ambient and house, all the way up through percussive rollers, broken techno, footwork and more. This mix is filed with left turns and unexpected blends. 
 
Ultima es una is a composer and producer from the East Coast of Mexico. Music from the jungle with steady drums, alluring percussion, haunting flutes, Latin elements & smooth house sounds, an easy listening experience and pure flavor. She creates soundscapes and organic sounds from nature and life experiences.

140 fans, do we have a treat for you! Up next on the mix series is our dear friend Rhombi. 

Based out of anemkii-wiikwedong in Northwestern Ontario, Rhombi is a selecta who serves up a deep and exquisite mix of eyes down dubstep and grime.

Rhombi is the co-founder of the Thunder Bay Bass Collective, a group of dedicated DJs and producers working to promote bass music events and sound system culture in Northwestern Ontario. They're also a co-host of CILU 102.7FM's weekly electronic music show Audio Vomit.

They have also had the pleasure of appearing at venues across Canada such as Future Forest Festival, Valhalla Sound Circus, SUB ZERO Music and Arts Festival, and Tumblestone Music Festival. Audio Social Mix Series 017 - SIM 

A tough new strain of dancehall has been gaining momentum over the past few years, and nobody embodies the sound better than Montreal's Sim. In charge of ASM 017, Sim showcases a range of low tempo sounds, including a wealth of their unreleased originals. Blending traditional dancehall rhythms with modern techno and uk bass aesthetics, this mix is a perfect snapshot of an exciting new branch of underground dance music.

Based in Montreal, SIM — influenced primarily by dancehall and artists like King Tubby and Dave Kelly, as well as Plastikman, Jeff Mills and Equiknoxx— found their entry point into electronic music. It was in their first tours in Europe and the US that SIM was introduced to Epic B, Uninamise, Hitmakerchinx and Brooklyn’s wider FDM network in New York as well as London’s TSVI, Mina, Kouslin and Jamie Rodigan that SIM began to refine and polish their own productions. At first glance you get a sense that SIM is the type of producer that holds a strong identity and a clear vision for their sound. With an entire career ahead of them, they are already a force of nature that could be unstoppable. The inspiration for this mix is their ongoing study of the the boundaries between dancehall, techno and their surroundings.

Audio Social Mix Series 018 - BLKFT 

BLKFT is Niitsiitapi from Siksika Nation and is the Founder and Manager of Drum Beat Entertainment. He is an award winning DJ, Producer, and Radio Host winning the 2019 National Campus and Community Radio Award for Best Electronic Music Show in Canada. He has been further nominated for the same award in 2022 with further accolades surrounding his work in the music community in southern Alberta and across Western Canada. BLKFT plays an eclectic mix of genres spanning Bass, House, Disco, and Drum and Bass.

Although you can usually find this award winning DJ playing house and Hip-Hop BLKFT mixed things up for the Audio Social series. Stating he found inspiration from listening to friends play bass and drum and bass on the Virtual Pow Wow Music Festival. This inspiration pushed him to expand his skills and listen to more artist who have been killing it within the bass music scene.  His mix reflects that inspiration and includes a variety of art from across Turtle Island.

Audio Social Mix Series 019 - Thuja 
 
Our latest mix comes from our very own Thuja. Thuja joined the Audio Social crew officially in 2021 but he’s been supporting Audio Social since the beginning. His roots are deep, along with his sound as he is an acclaimed producer getting featured on Subtle Radio and Deep Tempo.  Thuja released his first EP - Shapeshifter with Obsidian YVR last year and his track Welcome to the Party was featured on Deep Tempo in 2021. 
 
Although you may just be hearing his name now, Thuja has been producing tunes for years, and his early inspiration came from Eprom , noting he loved his production and sound design because they were all so different compared to anything else he has ever heard. His unique production style is what pushed Thuja towards music production in the first place. Like all great producers there has been growth within his sound and Thuja notes he is now inspired by Whatley, Darkimh and Sleeper. Inspired by the greats his sound is deep and mysterious, but Thuja wanted to treat us to a well rounded mix that covers a ton of different styles within dubstep featuring a few Thuja originals and bootlegs. His inspiration for the mix is something you could chill at home and listen to. 

Now we may be biased because we love his oh so much but he is a producer you should keep an eye out for. He is up-an coming and this is just the beginning.

Audio Social Mix Series 020 - Unmarried Woman

It's summertime (finally), and we can think of no better way to celebrate than putting out a mix from rising Vancouver selector Unmarried Woman. She has put together a killer mix of sunny disco cuts and toe tapping house for your next backyard BBQ or beach day, guaranteed to put a smile on your face as the weather warms and the days get longer.

UK transplant, Unmarried Woman infuses her love of soul and disco with classic house. She cites the influences of dynamic selectors like DJ Harvey and Motor City Drum Ensemble, who layer compelling samples gracefully amongst other electronic genres, to highlight the quality of each selection. 
With a recognised passion for music and comedy, she has fused the two by producing DJ live-streams punctuated with stand-up comedy segments. She continues to evolve her hosting style through her fortnightly ‘Guest Selections’ radio show, on Vancouver-based ‘B-Side Radio’. Through the show she celebrates local and international DJ talent, in an authentic, light-hearted way.
 Past accolades include performing alongside house legend Prosumer, shared the billing of the long-standing Disco Night at the Fox Cabaret, as well as the opening Public Disco event of the summer. Looking for her performing at Bass Coast festival this summer, opening up the Catina stage on the Saturday afternoon.

Unmarried Woman - Audio Social 020

For the 21st instalment of our mix series we have Audio Social co-founder Destrata stepping up with an hour of low tempo bass. Rolling through mutant dancehall, slow uk bass, & percussive bangers from around the globe, this mix showcases the 100-115 BPM bass sound at its most energetic.

Vancouver based DJ and Producer Destrata is never one to be limited by a specific genre or style. His debut track ‘Bait & Switch’, a 130 BPM hybrid drum workout, came out on Martyn’s legendary 3024 label in 2021 as part of the “It Was Always There’ compilation series. This was followed quickly by his debut EP ‘Low Sun’ on Danish label Indexlife; which combined minimal bass sensibilities with the percussive edge of Uk Funky.
In early 2022 the Norwegian label Top Billing released the ‘Energy Boyz Ep’, a collaboration between Destrata and techno producer Garneau. A hybrid of ravey breakbeat and classic electro, their Energy Boyz side project is an outlet for both producers' less serious side. Destrata’s output of left of center, percussion focused club music continued with his latest EP released on London's Eat My Beat in 2022, as well as another release with dutch imprint Intercept slated for later in the year.

Spring is in the air and this mix was inspired by the anticipation of festival season being just around the corner. This mix covers numerous genres with the thought of playing to a festival dance floor in mind. 

Jenn’s selections for this mix do not disappoint, they put you into an elated hyper state which we promise will get you excited for the magic in which festival season has in store for us. The Audio Social crew have been long-time fans of J.F.Killah, we have all thrown down at many of her sets and she played our favorite set of the summer last year at Shambhala. A fun fact about this selectress and producer is she grew up playing the piano and completed certification through the Royal Conservatory of Music. HOW COOL IS THAT?! Her being classically trained definitely translates into her mixes. Although Jenn is known to play dark and grime-y tunes, all of it is melodic, which blend flawlessly together. 

We have seen an evolution in J.F.Killah over the past few years. When she first started Djing she exclusively played Drum n Bass and Jungle, but her style has evolved to playing tons of genres. She credits this new evolution to being exposed to a wide variety of sounds while attending festivals and events and being inspired by other artists and producers. 

Jenn inspires us and we can’t wait to see what she brings to the festival scene this summer.

Sacha Gabriel 🍄👽🌌🌈🌀

For ASM 026 we have Vancouver local Sacha Gabriel on the decks with an hour plus of chuggy progressive house and melodic techno. Pulling together big room vocal tracks and melodic baseline Sacha shows how to maintain a consistent, deep and driving groove.

The inspiration for her mix, comes in a two fold. Sacha shares “ I wanted to pay homage to a genre that I considered really 'trippy' and 'transcendent' while growing up in the Rave Scene during the late nineties and early aughts. Progressive House is Dark, moody, and ethereal. Vocals set against hard-hitting four-on-the-floor beats and dreamy soundscapes. It's a sound I don't hear that often!” 

She also shared that as she is homing in on her zeitgeist of dirty-bass and tech, she is noticing the trends that are hitting a saturation point that is getting monotonous, so she switched things up a bit for this mix, noting its time for her to punctuate with the sci-fi sounds. 🛸🔫👽👾

Get your gunfingerz ready, Kilbourne is bringing back our mix series in a massive way. Inspired by the emotions he is currently feeling and the energy he is currently holding, this mix features an eclectic mix of Grime, Hip-Hop and Dubstep. Featuring an array of dubs and forthcoming bits from his friends, and released favourites.

Kilbourne’s sound is inspired by sound system culture and the roots I come from. Growing up listening to Hip-Hop he features a lot of Grime and Hip-Hop vocals in his own releases and in this mix. His inspiration for Dubstep came from the beaches of Texada Island from Diversity Music Festival.  With local legend Westerly bringing top tier Dubstep acts to the community based festival it introduced him to sound system culture and the depth of the music behind it. From then on, Kilbourne dove head first into the 140 realm and has worked extremely hard to establish a sound that resonates for him. His inspiration to grow and be creative is from nature, his community, his partner, the event and the emotions he is feeling. 

As friends and fans we see how hard Kibourne is working. He runs and curates Cimmerian records, plus has had some massive releases with Deep Dark & Dangerous, Cimmerian Records, Iron Shirt Recordings, Sublimated Sounds & Heft Audio. N1GHT W0RK is a DJ, Producer, Curator and Designer based in East Vancouver. 

As a beatmaker, N1GHT W0RK fuses his love for ‘00s Hip Hop and R&B with bass-forward sounds and shuffling rhythms borrowed from his favourite UK music genres. Building on this nostalgia, his DJ mixes weave minimal basslines, emotive melodies, sample chops and bouncing beats into future-forward blends finely tuned for sultry club experiences. 

As a member of Chapel Sound since 2014, N1GHT W0RK has been DJ’ing and organising events at various clubs and DIY venues throughout Vancouver. He recently launched WHEEL UP -- an East Vancouver event series aiming to connect community and like-minded artists who share a common love for bass heavy club music exported from the UK.

Audio Social is proud to bring you the 8th instalment of the series, an all original unreleased mix by SIADIC. Their encompassing sound and textures seamlessly blend elements of electronic, traditional instrumentation, and sounds of ambient nature together to create a sonic deep listening experience.

Siadic is the collaborative creation between two brothers, Adam and Simon Whitaker-Wilson. Their style explores deep, progressive, and downtempo territory which captivates their audience through continuous hypnotic soundscapes. With classical instruments, Siadic bridges the gap between live performance and contemporary engineering of low-end sound. They have opened for Djrum, TMSV, Egoless, Jafu and showcased at Ciliate and Eye of the Storm in Vancouver. They have also performed at festivals across Western Canada including Bass Coast, Shambhala, Kamp Festival, and The Field Gathering.

Siadic has independently released several singles and EP's, and have become well known for their all original live sets. 2019 marked the release of Zenith EP, on Sensing Waves. 2020 has brought out a new sound featuring their latest EP release, Nadir.
