Shanghai-based producer and DJ Laughing Ears became known to us through her 'Metamorphosis' EP on the inimitable Chinabot, an imprint showcasing some of the most exciting Asian artists operating in the experimental electronic sphere.

She's carved out her own sonic niche, which sees her chopping and screwing footwork and dubstep-inspired beats with haunting atmospheres and layers of synthesis. Since then she's also landed on the likes of Infinite Machine for her debut LP 'Blood' before being snapped up by Untold's Hemlock Recordings for her latest EP, 'Losing Track': another deep dive into broken rhythms, bass experiments and eerie atmospheres.

Off the back of the release, we asked her to deliver a mix which gives you an introduction to the sounds that form the backbone of her DJ sets and her own productions.

Laughing Ears: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

In celebration of our guest's birthday and the 50th offering from our fledgling nest at the Abstract without Abstraction HQ in Denver, Colorado, we are incredibly honored to present a special offering from an irreplaceable presence in the city's scene, Routing Number. 

Routing Number is a gifted DJ and keen selector who we first encountered in the realms of Denver's house & disco parties, but who we quickly learned is unable to be pigeon-holed; effortlessly traversing the sounds of the spectrum and seen beaming with an infectious enthusiasm on the dance floor as often as they are found behind the decks. Here, they pay homage to their metalhead roots, exploring the intersections between ambient, noise, heavy metal, and dance music in a mix delivered in a style that epitomizes what this series was originally intended to be all about.

As moods reflect, morph, and mirror the weather (here the depths of winter), we hope that you stay warm, look out for one another, turn the volume up, and enjoy pouring over this chapter in our guest's sound. For us, we hope it is just one of the opening chapters, with many more to come. "My loved one always says (borrowing from Rick & Morty): “you can’t learn anything until you learn how to chill” - and she’s damn right. Chilling is something I am pretty bad at though. You know, living in London and being slightly enslaved by my passions… but still, there is one place I am able to chill: the space in-between spectral voices, dub-infused grooves and weird & wonderful textures of the likes featured in this cocktail of, personally, very emotional tracks. As I listen, the oomphs and throbs flying out of subwoofers transport me right where stress lives - inside my own body. There, whispering words of comfort to my stiff muscles, I finally take a moment to take care of myself. 

I hope this mix will serve as a soundtrack for many other visceral soothing moments like this - a warm bath, incense and candles are highly recommended :)”

By breaking down Chez’s dedicated work into single words it becomes quickly evident how the Chicago legend has significantly shaped the evolution of clubmusic as we know it today. He was there when The Music Institute became the centre of Detroit's techno movement and facilitated the rise of The Belleville Three. He was there when KMS brought Detroit’s music to the world. And he was there, in a creative partnership with Ron Trent, when Prescription explored new levels of depth and nailed one of the greatest runs in house music history.

Despite the great achievements of the past, Chez is all about the future. After a break from the industry, he re-emerged with Balance Alliance, showcasing his ever-evolving approach to music and continuing to write house music history up to this day.
