In this FARview, Tjibbe Bosman explains the recent collaboration between FAR and an affiliated audit firm.

To scale up data gathering efforts, FAR has created a script based on Robotic Process Automation. Together with PwC, this script has been adjusted to use within the audit of a large asset management corporation, saving considerable time and resources. This collaboration is an excellent example of the possibilities of advancing interactions and functionalities between science and practice.

FARview#15 - Tjibbe Bosman - On the collaboration between science and practice

In deze FARview-podcast vertelt PhD candidate Iver Wiertz (Maastricht University) over zijn promotie-onderzoek "Virtual audit teamwork Working, learning, and delivering high audit quality virtually". Wiertz verricht zijn onderzoek vanuit twee invalshoeken: vanuit de afdeling Educational Research and Development en vanuit de afdeling Accounting & Information Management, beide onderdeel van Maastricht University.

Volgens Wiertz biedt het onderzoek op meerdere gebieden toegevoegde waarde: ‘Allereerst, identificeren we waar en wanneer virtueel teamwerk mogelijkheden biedt -en eventueel bedreigingen vormt- voor de effectiviteit van virtuele controleteams. Ten tweede, leveren we empirisch gevalideerd inzicht in hoe de strategische voordelen van virtueel teamwerk succesvol kunnen worden benut en hoe risico’s voor de controlekwaliteit kunnen worden vermeden door het bestuderen van variabelen die voor de accountant beheersbaar zijn. Tot slot, zullen we actief de verbinding zoeken met de accountantsgemeenschap. Hierbij zullen we gebruik maken van de mogelijkheden die de FAR ons biedt om onze vergaarde kennis te delen met de deelnemende kantoren op een manier die hun het beste schikt’.

FARview 16 Iver Wiertz over 'Virtual audit teamwork'

In deze podcast kun je luisteren naar Eddy Cardinaels en Simon Dekeyser over hun onderzoek 'Workload allocation process within audit firms'.

De onderzoekers zijn op dit moment bezig met het afnemen van interviews met lead partners van accountantskantoren en leden van de planningsafdelingen van de kantoren. Het doel van een planningsafdeling is onder andere het zo goed mogelijk afstemmen van lead auditors en cliënten. Dat kan lastig zijn omdat zowel lead partners en cliënten hun eigen drijfveren kunnen hebben om deze match te beïnvloeden. Enerzijds kunnen lead partners (bijvoorbeeld) een voorkeur hebben voor bepaalde cliënten omdat die beter passen in hun beoogd carrière-pad. Anderzijds kunnen bij cliënten (bijvoorbeeld) reputatie-aspecten van lead partners prevaleren boven kwaliteitsverbetering.

De analyses zijn nog niet afgerond, maar uit de verrichte interviews blijkt onder andere dat de koppeling van lead partners en cliënten grotendeels wordt gebaseerd op expertise, zoals mag worden verwacht. Toch lijken ook andere prikkels een rol te spelen. Zo zien de onderzoekers dat lead partners soms verschillen in hun risk appetite ten opzichte van cliënten, bijvoorbeeld omdat ze zich nog moeten bewijzen op het gebied van hun specialisatie. Kwaliteit lijkt echter inmiddels bij alle partijen hoog in het vaandel te staan.

In vervolgonderzoek hopen de onderzoekers hun bevindingen nog te kunnen koppelen aan controlekwaliteit.

FARview #18 Eddy Cardinaels en Simon Dekeyser over 'Workload allocation process within audit firms'

In deze FARview-podcast vertelt UvA-promovendus Tjibbe Bosman over het FAR-onderzoek ‘Bankruptcy and Auditor’s Reporting in the Netherlands’. Bosman deed samen met Merel van der Kuip en Wim Janssen onderzoek naar het aantal Nederlandse controleplichtige ondernemingen dat failliet ging in de jaren 2012-2020. Ze analyseerden of deze failliete ondernemingen in de jaren voorafgaand aan het faillissement jaarstukken deponeerden, of die jaarstukken voorzien waren van een controleverklaring en last but not least: wat de strekking was van de controleverklaringen.

Bosman presenteerde de studie inmiddels bij de NBA en bij de Europese Commissie. Uit de resultaten blijkt onder andere dat in de jaren voorafgaand aan een faillissement steeds minder vaak jaarstukken worden gedeponeerd en controleverklaringen worden afgegeven. Die controleverklaringen bevatten in het leeuwendeel van de gevallen geen materiële onzekerheid over de continuïteit.

Een probleem is dat veel ondernemingen zich niet houden aan het (tijdig) deponeren van de jaarstukken. Bosman pleit onder meer voor een striktere handhaving van tijdige deponering bij het Handelsregister.

FARview #20 met Tjibbe Bosman over 'Controleverklaring en faillissement'

In deze FARview-podcast bespreekt Olof Bik (hoogleraar Behavioral Auditing bij Nyenrode Business Universiteit) het onderwerp root cause analysis, sinds 10 jaar een hot topic in de accountantscontrole. Hij gaat onder andere in op de practice note die hij schreef over root cause analysis (Ten considerations for conducting Root Cause Analysis in auditing).

De basis voor de practice note (en voor een rapport over oorzakenanalyse van de NBA Stuurgroep Publiek Belang) is gelegd in een zogenaamde FAR Joint Working Group, waarbij tien accountantskantoren in een ‘veilige haven’ hun kennis over root cause analysis hebben gedeeld.

Bik bespreekt de herkomst en het nut van root cause analysis voor de accountantspraktijk, gelardeerd met vele praktijkvoorbeelden. Hierbij rijp en groen enkele take-aways uit de podcast:

• Het is goed dat het accountantsberoep inmiddels root cause analysis heeft omarmd om na te gaan wat er niet (en ook wel) goed gaat. En vooral ook wáárom dat gebeurt.
• Root cause analysis is vooral een leerinstrument.
• Root cause analysis is zeker ook voor kleine accountantskantoren geschikt.
• Een root cause analysis hoeft niet altijd tot een interventie te leiden.
• Zelfs met root cause analysis weet je nooit zeker of je het werkelijke causale verband te pakken hebt.
• Het root cause analysis team moet onafhankelijk kunnen opereren van de personen die de uiteindelijke interventies bepalen. De consequenties van de interventies mogen de analyse niet beïnvloeden.
• Zaken gaan vaak verkeerd door de drivers die ook zorgen voor een goede afloop.
• Root cause analysis kan ook worden gebruikt voor de analyse van gebeurtenissen die juist goed zijn gegaan.

FARview #21 met Olof Bik over 'Root cause analysis'

In deze FARview-podcast bespreekt Frank Moers (hoogleraar Management Accounting & Control, Maastricht University) de paper ‘Tacit Knowledge, Audit Quality, and Talent Identification’. Deze paper is een product van het FAR-project ‘The Loss of Talent’ dat Moers uitvoert samen met Isabella Grabner en Judith Künneke. Volgens hen wordt te weinig aandacht besteed aan de waarde van -en waardering voor- ‘tacit knowledge’ tijdens het carrièrepad van accountants binnen kantoor. Dat zou best een van de oorzaken kunnen zijn waarom talentvolle accountants een accountantskantoor verlaten. Dat is jammer, want tacit knowledge hangt positief samen met controlekwaliteit.

Onder tacit knowledge wordt verstaan: alle relevante kennis die niet formeel kan worden getraind. Die kennis staat dus los van de technische kennis die accountants veelal in hun opleiding en aan de basis van hun carrière opdoen. Het belang van tacit knowledge neemt toe naarmate een accountant hoger ‘in de boom’ komt te zitten. Het speelt een belangrijke rol in de kennis van het hogere leidinggevende echelon van een accountantskantoor. Eerder onderzoek toont aan dat meer ervaren accountants (met meer tacit knowledge) betere prestatiebeoordelingen krijgen.

Uit het onderzoek van Moers blijkt dat de mate van tacit knowledge bij de engagement partner samenhangt met de kwaliteit van de accountantscontrole (gemeten aan de hand van interne kwaliteitsreviews uit de dossiers). Op basis van deze bevinding zou je verwachten dat tacit knowledge ook een wezenlijk onderdeel is van het talent-identificatie-proces en de prestatiebeoordeling van accountants. Dat is echter niet het geval. De hoofdmoot van de beoordeling ligt op het gebied van technische kennis en vaardigheden. Moers noemt dat zorgwekkend. Het vormt volgens hem namelijk een mogelijke verklaring voor het verlies van talent door accountantskantoren. 

Moers: ‘Als je identificatie en behoud van potentie serieus neemt, dan moet je ook kijken naar welke karakteristieken en vaardigheden hoog in de organisatie nodig zijn en die expliciet meenemen in de beoordeling laag in de organisatie. Tacit knowledge vormt daarvan een belangrijk onderdeel.’

FARview #22 met Frank Moers over 'The loss of talent'

In deze FARview-podcast is Sander Tiggelaar te gast. Sander is PhD candidate aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. 

Sander gaat in de podcast in op zijn PhD-project ‘Management control in auditing firms and its implications for managing coexisting objectives’, waarvoor op de FAR-website reeds een literatuurreview beschikbaar is (zie link beneden). Inmiddels is de eerste ronde interviews voor het onderzoek achter de rug.

Accountantskantoren gebruiken meerdere beheersingsmechanismen tegelijkertijd. Hierbij worden zijn zowel op resultaat gebaseerde (zoals omzet) als op waarden gebaseerde (zoals cultuur) mechanismen van belang. Sander onderzoekt in hoeverre deze verschillende beheersingssystemen samenhangen met het gedrag van accountants, en vooral ook hoe deze systemen onderling kunnen samenwerken in het sturen van (gewenst) gedrag.

Uit de interviews blijkt onder andere dat de cultuur binnen een bepaalde vestiging van een kantoor grotere invloed heeft op gedrag dan de landelijk uitgedragen cultuur van de accountantsorganisatie. Dat is belangrijk om te weten.

Een wezenlijk onderdeel van het proefschrift zal gaan over het beheersen van het exploiteren van bestaande technieken versus het innoveren aan de hand van nieuwe technieken binnen de accountantscontrole

Het doel van het promotieonderzoek is om een duidelijk beeld te schetsen van welke controlemechanismen belangrijk zijn om accountants te helpen bij het maken van keuzes in hun werk.

FARview #23: Sander Tiggelaars PhD-project over management control in audit firms

In episode 24 of FARview, PhD student Xiaoxing Li (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) talks about her FAR PhD-project, which concentrates around data analytics. Auditors' data analytics potentially has many benefits for auditing, but may also challenge the application of professional skepticsm.

The main focus of the podcast is on a recent article by Xiaoxing in Maandblad voor Accountancy en Bedrijfseconomie (MAB): Behavioral challenges to professional skepticism in auditors’ data analytics journey. Next to defining auditors’ data analytics and explaining its importance, Xiaoxing discusses potential behavioral challenges to professional skepticism from five perspectives that she derived from the data analytics literature.

The behavioral challenges are:

o Auditors’ attitudes toward auditors' data analytics (e.g. algorithm aversion).
o Data characteristics (data reliability and data relevance).
o Anomalies identified by auditors' data analytics (false positives and false negatives).
o Auditors’ mindsets when using auditors' data analytics (e.g. fixed mindsets versus growth mindsets).
o Social contexts and interactions involved in auditors' data analytics practice (e.g. tone at the top, audit committee’s attitude and regulation).

Being aware of and prepared for these potential behavioral challenges to professional skepticism can be important for increasing the benefits of auditors' data analytics and for improving audit quality.

FARview #24 Xiaoxing Li's PHD-project over false positives vs. hit rates

In deze podcast vertelt Christian Peters over zijn paper ‘Auditor Automation Usage and Professional Skepticism’. Deze paper is onderdeel van zijn promotieonderzoek.

Accountantskantoren investeren miljarden in het implementeren van technologie in de accountantscontrole. In zijn onderzoek bestudeert Christian de gedragsmatige aspecten die een rol kunnen spelen bij het gebruik van deze technologie. Een van de risico’s is dat accountants technologie in sommige situaties meer vertrouwen dan gerechtvaardigd is. 

Met een experiment op het gebied van het reviewen van een voorraadtelling toont Christian aan dat accountants minder professioneel-kritisch handelen (ze besteden onder andere minder tijd) als zij controleinformatie krijgen vanuit een algoritme dan wanneer de informatie afkomstig is van een persoon. Deze accountants ontdekken ook minder fouten. Het gebruik van technologie kan dus een negatief effect hebben op het controlegedrag van accountants. 

Het gesignaleerde negatieve effect van technologie kan worden verminderd door het toepassen van een interventie in de vorm van een counterarguing mindset. Deze mindset wordt gestimuleerd door accountants enkele minuten lang argumenten te laten bedenken waarom voorgelegde stellingen niet zouden kloppen. Het vooraf activeren van een counterarguing mindset bij de accountants zorgt er inderdaad voor dat de negatieve gedragingen als gevolg van het algoritmegebruik afnemen.

Kantoren die technologie gebruiken kunnen dus gebruikmaken van het activeren van een counterarguing mindset. Maar ook als dat niet actief gebeurt kan bewustwording bijdragen aan het verlagen van de risico’s.

Christian laat ook zien dat verminderde oplettendheid (als gevolg van het steunen op een algoritme) bij het uitvoeren van een taak niet negatief doorwerkt in vervolgwerkzaamheden (getest aan de hand van een additionele goodwill impairment test).

Christian biedt ook nog een interessant inkijkje in de job market van aanstaande PhD’s.

FARview #26: Christian Peters over accountant, automatisering en professional skepticism

In deze FARview-podcast vertelt UvA-promovendus Tjibbe Bosman over zijn paper ‘Skin in the Game: The Consequences of Audit Partner Clawback Provisions’.

Een van de maatregelen uit het rapport ‘In het publiek belang: maatregelen ter verbetering van de kwaliteit en onafhankelijkheid van de accountantscontrole’ van de Werkgroep Toekomst Accountantsberoep was het invoeren van een clawback-regeling voor partners bij OOB-accountantsorganisaties (maatregel 3.5). 

De meeste accountantsorganisaties die OOB’s controleren hebben inmiddels zo’n regeling ingevoerd voor hun equity partners. De aanname is dat dit leidt tot hogere controlekwaliteit.

Bosman vertelt in deze podcast over de achtergrond van de clawback-maatregel en wat de consequenties zijn van die maatregel. 

Uit de onderzoeksresultaten, gebaseerd op 77 procent van de wettelijke Nederlandse controles tussen 2010 en 2019, blijkt dat partner-clawback-clausules ertoe leiden dat partners minder (risicovolle) controlecliënten accepteren. Ook stijgt het inkomen van de partners, ter compensatie van het clawback-risico. Bovendien verstrekken partners minder goedkeurende controleverklaringen. Echter, de clawback-maatregel leidt niet tot het verminderen van de kans op fundamenteel foutherstel (het intrekken van de controleverklaring), tot het verminderen van winststuring of tot betere rapportage op het gebied van continuïteit.

De bevindingen stemmen tot nadenken over de vraag of clawbacks een efficiënte oplossing zijn voor het verbeteren van controlekwaliteit.

Vragen van de controlerend accountant wekken soms wrevel op bij de cliënt. Vooral jongere accountants kunnen zich dan geïntimideerd voelen door controllers met meer ervaring. 

Het gebruik van e-mails kan deze negatieve effecten verminderen, maar heeft ook nadelen: de accountant mist mogelijk signalen van misleiding, zal minder doorvragen en bouwt minder aan de persoonlijke relatie met de cliënt. Gebruik van e-mail blijkt wel een betere manier voor het opvragen van documentatie.

In deze korte podcast vertelt Christian Peters (Nanyang Technological University) over twee aan elkaar verwante artikelen van Bennett en Hatfield waarin deze onderzoeken worden beschreven. Een artikel gaat over het effect van een sociale mismatch tussen controlerend accountants en de controller bij de cliënt. FARview #30: Christian Peters over sociale mismatch & e-mail- versus face-to-face contact

Wat weten we al over leren in het accountantsberoep? Als antwoord op deze vraag analyseerde Christian Peters ruim 100 academische artikelen, samen met Bart Dierynck en Kathryn Kadous. De resultaten daarvan zijn opgenomen in hun artikel ‘Learning in the auditing profession: A framework and future directions’ dat recent is verschenen in Accounting, Organizations and Society.

In deze korte podcast vertelt Christian Peters (Nanyang Technological University) over de opzet van het artikel en schetst hij de belangrijkste take-aways.

Het raamwerk voor de analyse is gebaseerd op twee dimensies: (1) de locatie van het leren (tijdens de controleopdracht of buiten de controleopdracht); en (2) de rol van anderen in het leerproces (actief of passief).

Een van de take-aways is dat mentor en protegee het best op informele wijze met elkaar in contact kunnen staan, waarbij de mentor helpt bij de ontwikkeling van de protegee, een rolmodel vormt en sociale steun biedt. De mentor-relatie tussen beiden moet echter niet te lang duren.

Christian bespreekt ook nog resultaten op het gebied van prestatiebeoordeling, ‘overconfidence’, socialisatie en het proces van ‘ervaring-reflectie-conceptualisatie-experimenteren’.

FARview #31: Christian Peters over leren in het accountantsberoep

Gaan lange werkweken ten koste van de kwaliteit van de accountantscontrole? Het antwoord is helaas: ‘ja’. 

Tjibbe Bosman (promovendus Universiteit van Amsterdam en verbonden aan de Foundation for Auditing Research) bespreekt in deze pitch een artikel van Christensen, Newton en Wilkins: ‘How do team workloads and team staffing affect the audit? Archival evidence from U.S. audits.’

De onderzoekers vinden dat werkweken van 55 uur en langer schadelijk zijn voor de kwaliteit van de accountantscontrole. Zij vinden, onder andere, ook dat continuïteit binnen het controleteam in opeenvolgende jaren kwaliteitsverhogend werkt. Deze effecten gelden met name voor assistenten en seniors. 

Het is dus belangrijk voor accountants, toezichthouders en andere belanghebbenden om oog te hebben voor de werkdruk van accountants en de continuïteit binnen de teams.

FARview Pitch: Gaan lange werkweken ten koste van controlekwaliteit?

Hoe kan een auditcommissie het accountantscontroleteam ondersteunen? Waardoor voelen accountants zich het meest gesteund? Wat zijn de gevolgen van die steun op het gebied van professional skepticism? En maakt het iets uit wie de steun vanuit de auditcommissie communiceert? Op die vragen geeft het onderzoek van Joe Brazel, Anna Gold, Justin Leiby en Tammie Schaefer een antwoord.

Anna Gold (hoogleraar Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) belicht in deze pitch twee onderzoeken die samen de basis vormen van het FAR-project ‘How do audit committees support audit engagement teams and encourage professional skepticism’.

Het gaat om een survey en een experiment. In de survey is onderzocht in welke mate en op welke manieren auditcommissies support bieden aan auditteams. In het experiment is onderzocht of support van de auditcommissie de professioneel-kritische houding van de accountant vergroot en of het verschil maakt wie (de voorzitter van de auditcommissie of de partner) de support richting het controleteam communiceert.

De bevindingen van de survey laten onder andere zien dat in ongeveer de helft van de controleopdrachten het controleteam ondersteuning ervaart vanuit de auditcommissie. Die ondersteuning wordt vooral gecommuniceerd door de partner of manager van het team. Veel respondenten geven overigens aan nooit informatie te ontvangen over steun van de auditcommissie. Bijna 70 procent van de deelnemers zegt in het geval van support vooral ‘emotionele steun’ te hebben ervaren (waarbij de auditcommissie bijvoorbeeld interesse toont in de bevindingen, beschikbaar is voor vergaderingen en begrip toont voor moeilijkheden). Andere vormen van steun worden in mindere mate gevoeld (bijvoorbeeld het mogelijk maken van samenwerking met het bestuur en het delen van inzichten over de klant).

De resultaten van het experiment suggereren dat het communiceren van steun vanuit de auditcommissie de accountant kan helpen om professioneel-kritisch te handelen bij een cliënt met een onvriendelijke houding ten opzichte van de accountant. Het maakt daarbij niet uit wie de support vanuit de auditcommissie communiceert.

What are the main drivers of auditors' skeptical actions?

In this short podcast/video, Therese Grohnert (Maastricht University) and Petra Tijmstra (NBA and PwC) talk about how they have experienced their joint FAR research project. The project can be viewed as a best practice of a symbiotic cooperation between practice and academia with mutual benefits. How can auditing practice and academia fruitfully work together?

In this FAR podcast Sara Bibler (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) talks about the purpose, findings and takeaways of the study ‘Thinking Outside of the Box: Engaging Auditors’ Innovation Mindset to Improve Auditors’ Fraud Procedures’ (co-authored by Margaret Christ, Tina Carpenter, and Anna Gold). 

Auditors face complex challenges, for example in fraud detection, where creative thinking is essential. Building on the creativity literature, the research team studied whether an ‘innovation mindset’ leads to more effective fraud procedures. Furthermore, because regulatory bodies have expressed concerns that focusing on client insights might detract from audit quality, this study also examined whether these concerns are justified.

Key findings:
Auditors prompted to adopt an innovative mindset identified more effective fraud detection procedures, improving audit quality without any reduction in efficiency. Importantly, the goal of providing client insights did not diminish audit quality and could coexist with fraud detection goals without negative effects.

Thinking outside of the box

Can culture controls improve audit quality? Well, according to Jasmijn Bol and her co-authors they can!

In this FARview, Professor Jasmijn Bol (Tulane University) talks about her paper ‘Can culture controls improve audit quality’. This is joint work together with Isabella Grabner (WU Vienna), Katlijn Haesebrouck (Maastricht University) and Mark E. Peecher (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign).

They investigated how cultural controls can improve audit quality.

It is key to build in the internalization of audit quality as a core value.

First, that requires socialization. There should be a focus on supportive leadership, by building an audit voice culture. That means that there's open communication, that people are tolerant of making mistakes and that there's a lot of appreciation for learning. Another part of supportive leadership is resource facilitation: make sure that there is a budget that allows for action-oriented skepticism.

Second, selection is important. When hiring, retaining, and promoting auditors, the personal values of these people should be closely aligned to the values that you're trying to socialize and internalize. The personal values of importance are care about societal interests (wanting to contribute to society) and ‘being a true seeker’ (wanting to get to the bottom of things).

FARview Jasmijn Bol: can culture controls improve audit quality?

On April 2 2025, Joe Brazel (North Carolina State University) gave a FAR-masterclass on this important question at Nyenrode University

During this highly interactive meeting he presented the findings from several of his research studies on the evaluation and support of professional skepticism in audit teams. 

Audit professionals are expected to apply professional skepticism, especially when signs point to potential fraud. But how is that skepticism evaluated by supervisors? Is it judged more by the outcome of the investigation than by the quality of the process? And what changes when supervisors begin to reward skepticism based on how it's applied, rather than what it uncovers? And does the active support by the audit committee increase auditors’ skepticism?

FAR masterclass by Joe Brazel: How can we improve the application of professional skepticism?

Ulrike Thuerheimer is an assistant professor in accounting at the University of Amsterdam. Her research focuses on financial auditing and sustainability assurance.

In this podcast, she covers several topics. She takes a closer look at the current state of sustainability assurance regulation in Europe and in the United States.

She then discusses how research in sustainability assurance compares to research in financial auditing, highlighting both the similarities and the differences.

She also outlines the main categories of research in sustainability assurance and wraps up with key findings and practical take-aways.

FARview Ulrike Thuerheimer: ‘Research shows that assurance on sustainability reporting adds value’

Sustainability assurance research is still in its early stages and many important questions remain unanswered. 

According to Ulrike Thuerheimer (assistant professor in accounting at the University of Amsterdam) directions for future research include:

• How do financial statement and sustainability audits interact?
• What team characteristics matter?
• How do materiality concepts differ between the financial statement and sustainability audits?
• How does limited assurance differ from reasonable assurance concerning sustainability?
• How to measure the quality of sustainability reporting (and assurance), possibly with the help of AI?
• What is the impact of (changes in) European regulation?
• What are cross-country differences in what parties are allowed to provide sustainability assurance? 
• How will the market and auditors react to future enforcement cases?

In de vijfde aflevering van onze podcast series FARview is professor Bart Dierynck te gast. Hij is hoogleraar Management Accounting aan de universiteit van Tilburg. 

Een accountantskantoor kan worden beschouwd als een high reliability organisatie, net als een ziekenhuis, een vliegmaatschappij of een kerncentrale. Als een accountant een verkeerd oordeel velt dan kan dat immers zeer serieuze negatieve gevolgen hebben, ook al gaat het dan eerder over geld dan direct over mensenlevens. Als we een accountantskantoor als een high reliability organisatie beschouwen, dan is dat een goede manier om te kijken naar hoe zaken beter kunnen, zeker ook op het gebied van leren. Tjibbe Bosman sprak met professor Bart Dierynck in deze podcast over deze interessante invalshoek.

Take-aways van deze podcast zijn:

•Het effect van leiderschap op de lagere niveaus, van senior richting junior bijvoorbeeld, mag niet worden verwaarloosd.

•Als de senior accountant een hogere mate van behavioral integrity vertoont, dan leidt dat tot meer psychologische veiligheid binnen het team, hetgeen een effect heeft op jobtevredenheid, prestaties en intentie om te blijven bij junior accountants.

•Prof. Dierynck zou graag zien dat alle stakeholders de accountants meer gaan beschouwen als lerende beroepsgroep en accountantskantoren meer als lerende organisaties. De invalshoek van een lerend beroep leidt tot een meer positieve instelling dan het verplicht afwerken van procedures. 

•Accountants zijn noodzakelijk en het is belangrijk om samen te zorgen voor het beste resultaat. Dat bereik je volgens mij niet met de ‘wij-zij-houding’ die je nu regelmatig ziet. En dat is ook helemaal niet nodig. De inspanningen om de controlekwaliteit op hoog niveau te houden zijn immers groot.’

FARview # 5 - Bart Dierynck - over daad-bij-het-woord-voegen, nieuwe situaties en leren

In the seventh episode of FARview, our guest is Justin leiby. He is an associate professor of accountancy at the University of Illinois. His research interests are primarily in the area of auditing, focusing on social aspects of auditing, like social status and empathy. One of Dr. Leiby’s main research and teaching interests is the role of empathy in auditing, which is covered in the first part of this podcast. In the second part of the podcast, Dr. Leiby talks about his current FAR-project (with Anna Gold and Kathryn Kadous) ‘The effects of expert status on the audit of complex estimates’.

Key take-aways: 

•We will benefit society and ourselves much more effectively if we view the world, at least partially, through an empathic lens. This also holds for auditing, of course.

•Companies, and the old guard at companies who have been very resistant to the idea of remote work, are being slowly persuaded that remote work can be effective.

•Auditors disagree with the client when a high-status expert disagrees with the client. This is encouraging. We also found that the auditors did not go along with the high-status expert when the expert agreed with the client and did not provide a good argument for their agreement. 

•Auditors know that competence and status are not always the same thing, but they also seem to know that competence is not enough.

FARview #7 - Justin Leiby – on empathy in auditing and the effects of expert status

Our guest for the eight episode of FARview is professor Marshall Geiger. He is a full professor of Accounting and the CSX Chair in Management and Accounting and Professor of Accounting at the University of Richmond, US. Professor Geiger has also been an honorary Professor of the Faculty of Business and Law at Deakin University in Australia. In collaboration with co-authors prof. Anna Gold and prof. Philip Wallage, he has made a research synthesis on the topic of Going Concern Opinions that was funded by the Foundation for Auditing Research.


Key take-aways: 


•A Going Concern Opinion is not supposed to predict failure, it’s a mechanism for the auditor to alert readers that there are concerns.

•Going concern research in a COVID-19 era might flesh out more cleanly that more industry experience will lead to more accurate going concern opinions.

•Companies are adapting their business models, but the real issue is how well they are going to do under the new business model, how excellent are they going to be able to execute their business plans. 

•The possibility of a second COVID-19 wave is an important issue. What will that wave look like? How much will it affect specific companies? And how much support will companies get then? That should also be disclosed by management.

FARview #8 - Prof. Marshall Geiger – on COVID-19 and the Going Concern Opinion

Our guest for the ninth episode of FARview is professor Wim Gijselaers. Gijselaers is professor of educational research at the School of Business and Economics at Maastricht University. His research focuses on educational innovation in higher education, social determinants of team cognition and team performance, and judgment and decision making in management and accounting.
In this podcast, Gijselaers answers the questions that could not be answered after his presentation during the FAR Conference, due to time constraints. Although this interview was planned to be an extension of the Q&A-session, it evolved into a broader podcast. So, this podcast went beyond answering the remaining conference questions.

Key take-aways:

•‘If young people in the hierarchy feel disconnected with the group, they tend to withhold important pieces of information. This doesn’t happen on purpose, it just happens. They might not even know they are withholding important information.
•As a partner of an audit firm, I would put substantial effort in the analysis of the client at the beginning of the audit, then sit together with the team and communicate the risks and tell the team what I think is important. Then, one or two weeks later already, I would plan another meeting. I would show my interest in them, from a factual perspective. 
•In previous interview-studies, juniors told us that they felt really lucky with a partner if he knew their name, if he made time to talk, didn’t look at his phone screen all the time but at them, and interpreted feedback as being genuine.
•Sometimes the partner faces a lot of budget pressure and has less or no time for appropriate attention for the team. Then it is also important to have invested in the beginning and made clear that there might be moments that the partner might seem a bit rude, due to the stressful calendar.
•The only way research findings will work in practice is if the practitioners get a sense of understanding what is driving the scientists, and the other way around. My experience shows that if you keep investing and start to appreciate each other’s strengths, then new research practices can develop which you might have never seen before, and which can become very powerful.’

FARview #9 - Prof. Wim Gijselaers - Mutual understanding leads to powerful research

In the 11th episode of FARview, our guest is professor Jasmijn Bol of Tulane university. On october 16th, she gave a masterclass on the topic of audit culture and its effects on audit quality. In this podcast episode we follow up on this masterclass with an in-depth discussion. 

In business, employees are one of the most important drivers of success. Audit firms, in particular, rely greatly on employee cooperation and know-how to achieve organizational objectives. As a result, smart audit firms motivate and guide staff members to organizational goals. Without proper motivation and guidance, employees take actions that may not enhance organizational value or may even take actions that destroy value. Importantly, this does not necessarily suggest that they engage in fraud or intentional negative behavior, because value also evaporates, for example, when employees simply prioritize the wrong actions on a busy day. To mitigate these motivation and direction concerns, effective audit firms use a management control system. In this research study, the project team examines how Dutch audit firms use their management control system to motivate and direct auditors’ efforts towards audit quality.

FARview #11 - Prof. Dr. Jasmijn Bol - Het effect van 'audit culture' op audit kwaliteit

What is the societal impact of fraud? What percentage of auditors have actually encountered fraud in their career? And how has the fraud topic evolved in the area of auditing, over the past decades? All these questions were answered by Mark Peecher (Professor of Accountancy at Illinois, Gies College of Business) in episode 12 of our podcast series FARview. 

Furthermore, Mark summarized the FAR-study he and his team are working on. In their FAR study, they conducted a field experiment in which 184 auditors listen to their own clients’ earnings calls in the midst of audit engagements. Preliminary results indicate that prompting auditors to focus on fraud actually reduces auditor concern about fraud risk! Prompting a focus on management dissonance, by contrast, results in an increase in auditors’ assessed risk of material misstatement and strengthens the correlation among assessing and addressing risk (cognitive dissonance is the negative, uncomfortable emotion a person feels when they are saying something that they know is not true).

FARview #12 -Prof. Dr. Mark Peecher - On the topic of addressing fraud in auditing

In episode 14 of FARview, PhD student Sebastian Kuhn (LMU Munich) talks about their FAR-project on the relationship between internal control quality and audit quality, and how financial analysts can contribute to audit quality. Kuhn sheds some more light on the two ‘work packages’ that are part of the project. The first package is ‘understanding the relevance of internal control quality for audit quality’. The second package is about ‘identifying financial analysts as an information channel that may allow auditors to assess internal control quality more accurately and efficiently’.

Particularly, the second work package is innovative. The general notion is that financial analysts are highly interested in internal control quality, because that directly affects firm operations, which in turn influence future performance. This is an incentive for the analysts to gain as much information on internal control quality during the analyst meetings. Previous research shows that analysts possess superior information concerning the influence of external determinants (like macro-economic factors) on firm performance, and their internal control quality. In their FAR research project, Kuhn and his team members study how the analyst knowledge concerning ‘asking the right questions’ can help auditors in assessing fraud risks, for example by developing a ‘dictionary’. FARview #14 - Sebastian Kuhn - on the relationship between internal control and audit quality

Veel bestaand onderzoek op het gebied van de accountantscontrole kijkt naar de uitkomsten van de controle, bijvoorbeeld naar de controlekwaliteit. Professor Jeroen Suijs en zijn team kijken in hun FAR-onderzoek echter meer naar de ‘productiekant’ van de controle, naar de inputs: welke diensten verricht de accountant en hoe is dat gekoppeld aan de mix van werkzaamheden die de accountant verricht en aan de audit fee?

De basisvraag die aan het onderzoek ten grondslag ligt is of verschillende typen ondernemingen verschillende accountantscontroles nodig hebben. En dan gaat het met name om DGA-ondernemingen versus OOB’s. De gedachte is dat de interne en externe waarde van een accountantscontrole verschillen tussen die twee groepen ondernemingen. De interne waarde van de activiteiten van de accountant is naar verwachting (relatief) groter voor DGA-ondernemingen dan voor OOB’s. Dat beïnvloedt naar verwachting ook de relatie van de interne waarde met de bijvoorbeeld de ‘labor mix’. 

De eerste resultaten laten zien dat de bestede tijd bij OOB’s relatief groter is aan het einde van het jaar en bij de DGA-ondernemingen juist gedurende het jaar. Nadere analyses volgen nadat alle data zijn verzameld. De bevindingen raken mogelijk de Standaarden voor accountantscontrole en het opleidingstraject.
