Have you ever been daydreaming at work and ended up seeing a film reel in your head of moments that changed your life? I was in the middle of doing that once and after the third viewing, it trailed off to a memory of an interview where Justin Currie (Del Amitri) professed his hate for “list songs” (thanks, Billy Joel!) while introducing one his band had just recorded. At that moment it occurred to me that I'd just done the same thing. I know gentlemen aren't supposed to kiss and tell, but it seems Audrey Smilley will.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings

I wrote this after delivering pizza to Provo Canyon School in the late 80s. Provo Canyon School was intended for "wayward" children, though I've heard lots of stories about the fact that that definition was pretty broad.  I was struck by the fence that was between the grounds of the school and an upper-middle class neighborhood adjacent to it. I was trying to write the song from the perspective of someone forced to be there.

This was recorded live in 1988 in at Broderick's, a club in south Provo, Utah. This version of the song was released on vinyl as Theatre of Ice since the four members of Audrey Smilley were also playing in the live version of T.O.I. It became Theatre of Ice's biggest selling single ever.

Kill Your Girlfriend

Blind Lead the Blind recorded live at Foodstock in 1988. Foodstock was a concert benefit for the homeless held at BYU. Attendees were admitted by bringing cans of food instead of money. This was one of our many drummerless seasons so we played acoustically. We also figured if we wore ties and white shirts, the Daily Universe would put our picture in the paper. It worked. :)
