HINTERGARTEN DJ CONTEST 2025

Roul Bauer aka Vicious Steam Engine

Born in 1978 in Germany, Roul Bauer—better known as Vicious Steam Engine—discovered his passion for techno during the explosive rave movement of the 1990s in Switzerland and Germany. Deeply inspired by the driving rhythms and hypnotic energy of the scene, he carried that passion forward until it fully ignited during the COVID-19 lockdown in August 2020. It was then that his desire to create his own sonic journeys came to life.

A year later, he began producing his own techno tracks and honed his mixing skills through a DJ/mixing workshop with Mixmasters.ch. To sharpen his craft and connect with the underground community, he launched his own podcast on SoundCloud: Hot Pressure Stream. Originally started as a training ground, the podcast quickly gained momentum, attracting a growing audience and guest DJs such as Anne Rosko, Isca Nublar, 909RIOT, Traumtherapie, DJ E-Viction, Tchie, Andy Pirie, Techno X-Citement, DJ Capelli, X-Dream, and Nao Tamura.

Vicious Steam Engine has made guest appearances on several respected underground techno podcasts, including TECNO OSCURO (2 DJ sets), A Darker Wave, Techno Topic by Andy Pirie, and RTDFRAVERRADIO (Brooklyn, NY). He has also been featured on Capelli’s Outta Freak’in Control Podcast, an episodic series that showcases cutting-edge underground talent and airs on RTDFRAVERRADIO.com. His recent guest sets placed him alongside legendary and rising artists such as Frankie Bones, Lenny Dee, Jim Solis, D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Rewilder, Chris Liberator, DJ Papa Smrf, Jay Maniakal, DJ Capelli, DJ Hooraa, Bösetecha, Destro187, and Belaroc.

On November 28, 2021, Vicious Steam Engine released his debut EP Dark Dance of Gratitude on TECNO OSCURO, followed by the Kill the Silence EP on April 18, 2022.

Since 2023, he has taken a deep dive into music production, attending two techno retreats hosted by Mixmasters.net in Ibiza. There, he studied with industry legends such as Funk D’Void, Patrik Berg, Harvey McKay, Wehbba, and Josh Wink. He is currently advancing his production skills through an online course in electronic music at Sinee Institute, led by Björn Torwellen, while also mastering the Ableton Push 2.

With relentless dedication to evolving his sound, Vicious Steam Engine continues to build momentum and forge his path in the global techno scene.

Bio:
Schöppou, whose real name is Marcel Schöpperle, resides in the sun-drenched city of Kehl (Ortenaukreis) in Germany. At the age of 15, his passion for techno was rewarded with a home studio. He began spending time at youth centers, parties, or simply hanging out with friends. This is where he experimented, composed, discarded, and ultimately found his style, which continues to evolve to this day. He pursued his passion without hesitation, taking pride in his work. What initially started as a hobby gradually became more professional due to his perfectionism, leading him to produce his own tracks.
In the vibrant club scene, Schöppou has increasingly embraced electronic music and has become deeply immersed in it. His distinctive techno style is already recognized by fans who eagerly listen to his sets. To this day, he has garnered an ever-increasing number of bookings in the border triangle of Switzerland, France, and Germany.
As the techno bunker in Freiburg began to grow, the founder sought a DJ. Schöppou caught their attention, and soon he became a resident DJ at the techno bunker. Clubs known beyond the city limits, such as Drifters and the Hans-Bunte area, have since become integral to his identity. His rising fanbase, affectionately called "Mauso," accompanies him to a wide variety of events, gigs, and festivals. Since then, he has performed in various scene clubs in Freiburg, including KGB, Crash, and Harmony Cellar.
Since 2016, not only have the bookings increased, but also major festivals such as Seayou Festival and Grenzinlos Festival have recognized Schöppou. In 2019, he was able to share his passion for techno with his fans. In 2018, another milestone was reached with the Next Club in Strasbourg, which rewarded his consistent efforts since the end of 2018 to pursue his own path. Depending on the gig, his sets can be harder, more melodic, or more soulful, always maintaining a symbiosis of bass, feeling, and mood.
Schöppou has rocked the dance floors multiple times alongside various headliners, including DJ/Producers Zakari & Blange, Klanglos, Daniel Hermann, Robust Forty-Two, Techno DJane Naomi Black, Silvano Scapeta, Marsi, Miss Dark, Bruchrille, Decker, and many more.
