In our thirteenth episode we present a special episode, with a luxury guest from the USA, Lisa Smith AKA Noncompliant or Dj Shiva. 

“As her moniker implies, she takes no prisoners, channelling the fury instilled by worldly injustices into blistering, defiant sets.” - Mixmag 2017

Raised in small town Indiana on a musical diet of 80s synth pop and punk rock, Noncompliant soon found barnyard raves and warehouse techno parties and (as DJ Shiva) quickly became a fixture of the fabled 90s Midwest USA rave scene.

Two decades and a name change later, she is at the top of her techno game. Mixmag named her one of 2017’s Top 20 Breakthrough DJs. She owned a packed and sweaty Boiler Room during Movement Detroit, turned in mindblowing mixes for Slam Radio, Discwoman, and Resident Advisor, and quaked some of the world’s most respected dance floors like Smartbar Chicago, Amsterdam’s DeSchool, Concrete in Paris, and Berlin's legendary Berghain. Her festival appearances include Unsound, Red Bull Music Festival Paris, Movement Detroit, and Whole United Queer Festival.

As a producer, her releases, and remixes on labels like Valence, Argot, Flash, and Dark Entries have pounded sound systems worldwide, with her tune “Women’s Work” landing on Fiedel’s official Berghain 08 mix and on his label Fiedeltwo.

At her core, she is a die-hard techno fan with a deep love for music and a drive to continue honing her craft as a DJ and producer in order to share her favorite music with people on dance floors everywhere.

Rolando Ray Rocha - @rolando000 grew up in south west Detroit, a Hispanic district, he was heavily influenced by his cultural Latin rhythms and percussion. Inspired from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the community. It was later when he heard @axis-jeff-mills in 1985 as "The Wizard" that he discovered the innovative sounds of Techno. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Mike Banks and joined Underground Resistance in 1994.
In 1999 'Jaguar' although not Rolando's first release on UR turned perceptions of Techno on their head, breaking into other genres of dance music and becoming a classic in the boxes of DJs such as @danny-tenaglia-officia, @carl-cox, @pauloakenfold, and @gillespeterson. The track has a long legacy of reworking and lives on fifteen years later inspiring audiences from all genres.
As of November 2004, Rolando left both Underground Resistance and his Los Hermanos project behind.
2014 Rolando has launched his own label R3 (Roland Rocha Records) and will exclusively release his own music on his label.
Rolando now a Dj for almost thirty years continues to work internationally as a Dj and continues to hold a residency at the notorious and enigmatic Berlin club Berghain.

Renewal, rebirth, regeneration. Such is the vernacular of spring, a moment where life begins again with a burst of new energy. However, this particular Spring brings with it rather heavy times that have come to consume our entire conscious experience. When such darkness surrounds us every day, sometimes music can be one of the only outlets for the catharsis we feel. 

Back with the second part of their Unrush Mix, Slam shows us they are unafraid to confront these themes. A truly engaging listen, and one perfectly fitting for this current moment of hopeful lament...

Antenes is the name multidisciplinarian Lori Napolean currently works under, making her debut as a producer earlier this year with a firing triplet of modular techno workouts on the L.I.E.S. White Label series after first serving note of her talents on a prior label compilation. Her production chops go back further however, with Napolean operating a laboratory of self-made analogue sequencers and synth modules for several years that incorporate telephone switchboards, built and manipulated in the name of rhythmic, sonic, and spatial exploration. If you’ve watched the modular synth documentary I Dream Of Wires, you are probably aware of Napolean’s endeavours, but those that haven’t can watch her part here.

If we were to trace the lineage of this podcast, then it all began with the conversation between Aurora Halal and former Juno Plus man Scott Wilson leading up to the feature we ran on the Mutual Dreaming founder in early 2014. It was then that Halal mentioned in passing one of the regular selectors at Mutual Dreaming, Lori Napolean, whom she referred to as ‘The Brookyln Hauff’. Intrigued by this comparison we made contact with Napolean soon after, laying the groundwork for the two hour techno session now published. Does the comparison stand up? In truth, Napolean’s talents as a selector would compare favourably with any high profile DJ out there on the basis of this mix.

A quick glance at the supplied tracklisting should elicit an excitable reaction in any self-respecting fan of techno, drawing through several generations of the genre’s exponents, bookened by some local field recordings. We’ve been waiting some time for this mix from Antenes and it’s been worth it! In very little time he has strongly stated an eclectic sound as a producer, exploring the boundaries of techno, electro, ambient and IDM on his label Insurgentes and on his DJ shows at South American festivals like Dekmantel Bogota and Festival Tatacoa. Keep your ears on this one...

Dutch techno hero Dimi Angélis is presenting an incredible 3 hours of 100% Jeff Mills vinyl on a 2 decks set-up. Hypnotic to blistering, sci-fi to gritty, all sides of Jeff are being on this newest contribution to the series. A must listen for sure, and it includes a tracklist (scroll down!) too.

Dimi: “The mix is recorded during the last ANGLS Locked stream I’ve been doing at my studio every two weeks since we were in lockdown. Most of the time I pick a theme for the show, and after doing one on Regis, Surgeon, The Advent and Luke Slater, it was about time to do a Jeff Mills special.

This got a bit out of hand time-wise though and ended up being 4.5 (!) hours. Mills is so diverse, but in general it’s always deep. After all, this mix is kind of a club night trip. I start the mix like I would do in a club, but only added a bit more ambient and soundscape-stuff to the beginning.I found the original length being a bit too long for a podcast though, so I decided to take that first part - including the more atmosphere-y beginning - off. It’s almost 3 hours full of Mills stuff now, and overall I hope it shows his diversity and what he stands for. Almost everything he has been doing sound-wise comes along within the mix.”
