Dark ambient synthesizer music inspired by astrophysical phenomena, specifically the recent discovery of J0613+52, a primordial “dark galaxy" the size of the Milky Way but without any visible stars.

All tracks were composed and recorded using a minimal hardware-only setup, which included a small Eurorack modular system (with Erica Synths Graphic VCO as the main sound source) augmented by a Make Noise 0-Coast, Nord Rack, Eventide Blackhole reverb, and Boss RC-1 Loop Station.

Everything was recorded live just as you hear it, without any overdubs or DAWs.

This compilation documents the initial experimental ambient phase of my creative journey as Auldwav.

Included here are four previously released songs, plus one new song, "Remembrance."

All songs were composed and recorded using a minimal, hardware-only set-up, which included a Make Noise 0-Coast semi-modular synthesizer, a small Eurorack modular system, an Electro-Harmonix 22500 looper pedal, some effects pedals for reverb and delay, and a Tascam DP-006 digital recorder.

Tracks 1, 3, and 5 incorporate sounds from the excellent Sonic Beds Vol. 1 sound pack by Jogging House (jogginghouse.gumroad.com).

PLEASE NOTE: Out of consideration for listeners with unilateral hearing differences and/or people with other monaural listening needs, no stereo effects were used during the recording or mixing of these tracks.

Old-school, sequencer-driven electronica, with a steady Motorik beat.

Composed and recorded using a hardware-only setup that included a small Eurorack modular system* augmented by a Make Noise 0-Coast semi-modular analog synthesizer and 0-CTRL analog controller, Korg SQ-1 step sequencer, and Eventide Blackhole reverb pedal.

Everything you hear is fully automated by the various control voltages of the "patch" except for the sequencer pattern changes which were performed manually on the SQ-1.

The concept of reanimation has special relevance here as this piece emerged organically out of a "dark night of the creative soul" that I experienced after the release of my previous single Arivaca. I was feeling worse than uninspired. In fact, I was questioning whether I should be spending my limited free time making music at all. So I put all my gear in the closet for a month or so, and did other things with my free time (I mostly read fantasy novels). Eventually, I went back to my first love, electric guitar, and just played music for fun with no expectations of composing or releasing anything. Finally, I brought my Eurorack out of the closet. Things slowly built from there, as the audio-tactile experience of patching CVs and turning knobs reanimated my musical inspiration.

Reanimate

Rhythmic dronescape blending sustained digital wavetable and analog oscillator tones with a syncopated tribal beat.

Composed and recorded using a hardware-only setup that included a small Eurorack modular system* augmented by a Make Noise 0-Coast semi-modular analog synthesizer, Korg SQ-1 step sequencer, and Eventide Blackhole reverb pedal.

As with all my tracks, "Circular" was recorded in mono out of consideration for listeners with unilateral hearing differences.
