This is a series of 14 short excerpts from world-renowned bassist-composer-bandleader William Parker's 8CD Box Set, Wood Flute Songs: Anthology/Live 2006-2012.  The box features ALL previously unissued multi-track concert recordings, and over half of Parker's compositions therein make their debut on record as well.  At the core of the box is the William Parker Quartet - WP: bass+, Hamid Drake: drums, Rob Brown: alto sax, Lewis Barnes: trumpet.  Also featured are full concerts by his groups Raining On The Moon & In Order To Survive; and the Quartet together with the AMR Ensemble (of Geneva, Switzerland), Billy Bang, Bobby Bradford & James Spaulding.

This piece is the opening section of an orchestral work entitled, “Ceremonies For Those Who Are Still”, which is dedicated to all those who are magical who inspired me. Each piece of the whole work is a small ceremony.

Additional details:
This piece is inspired by and dedicated to Black American activist George Jackson. It is from the album, "Corn Meal Dance."  The whole album puts song-form to the forefront. Music that can be readily sung & danced along to, with love in heart.

Additional details:
This piece is part of a longer work entitled "The Blinking of The Ear". The dream was to combine written music with improvised music; slowly and seamlessly folding them together as one. This sextet live version wholly realized that dream; it was an extraordinary event in music called universal tonality.

Without Love Everything Will Fail

Arranged for; performed by voice & piano, and then overlaid by jazz quartet improvisation (drums, bass, alto saxophone, trumpet).

Additional details:
Prayer is a hymn coming out of secular music, and performed by voice & piano. That recording is then lovingly blanketed by a quartet improvisation.

Additional details:
Tabasco is a composition named after the Mexican state of the same name. This music is part of the electric guitar project called "Mayan Space Station".

Additional details:
This piece was written for the great composer and band leader Edward Kennedy Ellington. It was part of a full concert in Milan, Italy for which I was commissioned to present interpretations of Ellington's work. Getting to the essence of Ellington's work was an essential part of the process.

Additional details:
This comes from a large ensemble piece called, "Double Sunrise Over Neptune". It is a composition that is constructed with a concept I call Universal Tonality, which features the blending of tempered and non-tempered instruments, and often -as here-, a communion of musicians from many corners of the world who have never before played together.
