Lithuania is undoubtedly one of the countries leading the direction of contemporary dance electronics for some time. We are happy that we can give space to their young promising DJs in our podcast.

Born and raised by the Vilnius atmosphere, Roudtraxx has been part of the local underground club scene for several years. He is part of the well-known record store and label Discotag, where he has plenty of opportunities to devote himself, as he says, to his musical obsession.

For us, he has prepared a selection of his favourite club tracks. It is up to you to decide what a fresh breeze sounds like from a distant land.

Mannequin Records next release, out 23rd November is about the Mutoid Waste Company, the legendary performance arts group founded in West London in the early 80s and an important part of the underground counter-culture in Berlin and European early rave scene (Spiral Tribe) to be re-discovered. The Mutate tracks where created in 1990 when Steffe Sharpstrings Lewry, vocalist composer and producer from the UK, active since the mid 1970 (Gong, Planet Gong, Here & Now), was living with members of the Mutoid Waste Company.

MWC were described as "part street theatre, part art show and part traveling circus" in the 1986 LWT documentary South of Watford presented by Hugh Laurie.

The group became famous for building giant welded sculptures from waste materials and for customising broken down cars, as well as making large scale murals in the disused buildings where they held their parties.

In 1989, after a number of police raids on their warehouse in King's Cross, they left the country and travelled to Germany where they became notorious for building giant sculptures out of old machinery and car parts, one of which was 'Käferman', a giant human figure with a Volkswagen Beetle for its chest, offering a Bird Of Peace sculpture that overlooked the Berlin Wall towards East Berlin and the regime of East Germany. They had a collection of scrap military vehicles, including a Russian MiG 21 fighter aircraft which 'followed' them around wherever they went, and a painted tank known as "the Pink Panzer".

Deeply influenced by the rise of the acid house and the industrial/experimental sounds naturally erupted at the end of the 80s, the 3 tracks where included in a video compilation of Mutoid art, “How The Mutoids Brought Down The Berlin Wall”, edited by film maker Jonathan Barnett.

Steffe Lewry - Mutate (part one)

The record label Gladio Operations launches its second release onto the market after the recognition of its debut EP Flight to Anywhere released in June. 
War to The Future gives its name to the first series of various artists from the label, which includes four electro cuts, exclusively orientated for the dance floor.

The EP opens with a producer from Barcelona Univac, who after releasing Chernobyl tracks on the Dutch label Moustache Records, gifts us with Station Cero, a powerful, devastating track resonating with industrial sounds. The second track titled Poison, bears the signature of the Ukrainian artist Lectromagnetique, a track loaded with excellent dark and enigmatic sounds. The owners of the Gladio Operations label, UHF, open side B with Unexplained Situation, a vertiginous journey wrapped in rich and deep psychedelic textures. 
With releases on well renowned labels such as Bass Agenda and Bunker Records, the Serbian producer Alavux closes the EP with Sunset, a fantastic track with an aggressive bass line and significant and repetitive sequences.

Filled with coarse synth-lines, percussive kicks, pierced with eerie vocals and submerged into nostalgic ambience it’s a cinematic sound journey for those brave enough to take it.

TYVYT|IYTYI - Shade Beneath

They sat around the television, eyes glued to the national broadcast. A few moments later it concluded but they were no wiser than before. Little to no information had been shared, the guidance they'd been waiting for nowhere to be seen. But were they surprised? Empty promises had always been the dish of the day. The system was well and truly broken, and seemingly nobody was taking on the responsibility to fix it. 

Since their inaugural release in 2017 from Ecotone, Dutch label Rotterdam Electronix have been serving up the best in electro and techno. They followed up the first EP with outings from the likes of Betek, Discipline and their last breakbeat fuelled release from Prague duo Fractions. Taking control of the eighth on the label is modular enthusiast Crossover Network who works together sluggish rhythms, drones and driving bass for a soundtrack to a dystopian future.

Vakula, a versatile Ukrainian producer and a long-term Arma contributor, drops a new album on the label.

In Search of Ancient Civilization is an contemporary electronic work at its finest, although the tools used to shape its sound are linked to a folk tradition. For that matter the album features musicians from within Vakula's creative circle. Tracks that needed specific vocals and also rare instruments such as harp, fujara, tambourine have been produced in collaboration with Olena Nevertii and Yaroslav. The artist has sampled himself while throat singing along with field recordings in natural surroundings.

There's a message behind the carefully made-by-hand fantasy aesthetics of the production and its unconventional voice. Vakula's fascination with the Ancient world moved him through the history of humanity, to the point where his findings were insightful enough to warn the listener: "It's time to wake up".

In Search of Ancient Civilization is the 22nd release of Arma Records to be released on 23rd October 2020.
