Despite the levels being set really high, there is not much built-in noise.  The stereo image is not as strong as it could be if you were using external mics.  imho.  :-)

True, Rudyard Kipling was based in India - but the jungles his stories were based on are also found in the terai region of Nepal! Chitwan National Park is home to a healthy population of tiger, leopard, sloth bear, rhino, elephant, gaur, dhole, sambar deer, spotted deer and many more mammals, not to mention around 500 species of bird!

This soundscape was recorded late one afternoon in grassland adjacent to a stretch of dense riverine forest. Being mid-spring, the air was full of vibrant birdsong with orioles, barbets, doves, magpie-robins, ioras, mynas, coucals, junglefowl,peafowl and many more species all calling to create an incredibly complex soundscape.  The alarm call of a large Sambar deer can be heard as a deep bark at regular intervals, a sure indication of a tiger or leopard nearby.

Just spent a lovely long weekend in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. The first couple of days the weather was warm but windy, making recording difficult. But yesterday, the 1st of September was a perfect - 26 degrees celsius and no wind. Despite the chilly morning, the dawn birdsong was spectacular, as if the birds knew spring had arrived.

It was one of those rare times where all of the elements come together and make for a perfect soundscape - nothing to do with me or the recording gear - just pure nature at it's best. I'm going to make the recording into a album over the coming days - stay tuned!

Round Hill & Nombinnie Nature Reserves protect vital mallee habitat in western NSW, Australia. Spring is a great time to visit these areas, and if you can handle the frosty mornings, the intense dawn chorus of the mallee country is amazing.

Species recorded include: Bar-shouldered Dove, Common Bronzewing, White-fronted, Grey-fronted & White-eared Honeyeaters, Gilbert's Whistler, , Crested Bellbird and Southern Scrub-Robin

Dawn in Mallee Country

The sounds of the rainforest late this afternoon were wonderful. I visited Eubenangee Swamp National Park, about an hours drive south of Cairns, and took a trail which meandered through lowland tropical rainforest alongside a river. Yellow Orioles are the dominant species calling with their magical liquid fluty sounds filling the humid air.

This is one of my most favorite bird vocalizations. Recorded in Belize, this is the Montezuma Oropendola. The strange and remarkable song of the Montezuma Oropendola is an ascending series of overlapping bubbly syllables which crescendo to a high peak.  The song is often accompanied by a scratchy call that is reminiscent of a fizzling firecracker or the ripping of a thick fabric (Stiles & Skutch 1989). A single-syllable whiney eeuh call seems to function as a contact call between birds. Howell and Webb (1995)

Montezuma Oropendola

A huge woodland grouse, the large black males are unmistakable. They spend a lot of time feeding on the ground, but may also be found in trees, feeding on shoots. Localised breeding species, found in Scottish native pinewood, a rare and vulnerable habitat, and in commercial conifer plantations. The UK capercaillie population has declined so rapidly that it is at very real risk of extinction (for the second time) and is a 'Red List' species.

Less than 100km from Sydney, the highlands of Kanangra-Boyd National Park seem a world away. This vast area of wilderness is less visited than the nearby Blue Mountains National Park , but it's stunning gorges and alpine plateaus are equally beautiful. Swampy peat bogs and snow gum woodland are features of this highland region, and these specialised habitats play a vital role in the water cycle. The peat acts as a huge spongy reservoir, slowly releasing crystal clear, naturally filtered water into the creeks and rivers which eventually feed into Sydney's water supply. Birds, mammals and frogs all thrive in this protected area, and this album features three distinct soundscapes recorded over the period of a day in the reserve.

It's a sunday morning and most people sleep in, not this chap though. He is busy chipping away at an old snag to find his breakfast.The birds around the neighborhood have just finished bringing in the dawn with their singing and are busy planning their day ahead. You can hear a flock of chestnut-backed chickadees and the plaintiff song of the swainson's thrush. Happy fathers day to all.
