Beyond the incredible venue, production, and beautiful collection of humans, there were three things that made set this extra special for me: opening the room to an empty dance floor, having the DJ booth in the center of the room, and playing the most original music I’ve played in a set. 

I rarely get to build a room from zero anymore, so I took great pleasure in playing records early on that are subtler, slowly building tension as people trickled into the venue. Having the booth in the center made it much easier for me to sense what the people sonically needed as the night progressed - we all were locked in for the last hour. 

I also blended the ambient room sounds with the mixer output capture the spirit of the night. You’ll hear the excitement of the crowd match the energy crescendo. When I listen to the set, it almost feels like I’m transported back to the party. 

It a very special gig, and I’m grateful to Robot Heart for having me play.

I’m super happy to share this special recording with you guys from what was not only my first time playing stereo, but was one of the most treasured musical moments of my journey so far. 

Being invited by one of my best mates to bring in the new year together in this temple of music and dance was something I’ll never forget. The energy in the room that night was so special. We were surrounded by many of our best friends, some family and the most dedicated Montreal music community as well as some friends and dancers who had travelled from the US and other parts of Canada to be there with us. 

I opened things up before Mik (Kora) took over for another 4 hours or so and then we finished things b2b for another 4 hours. 

After countless nights/days at our studio playing together with a small group of close friends, it was something we had dreamt of doing at Stereo and somehow even though the club was sold out, it still felt like an extension of those intimate experiences. Where it feels like connecting authentically to the music and to each other is not just a celebration or a party, but collective therapy. United energy, everyone channeling their joy and their pain, their love and their gratitude through the music. There are few places where this still feels possible and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to play there and do it alongside someone that has become like family to me.

My affection for Robot Heart is well-known, tracing back to my first encounter with it in the desert sands in 2008. Over the years, my musical journey has been deeply influenced and shaped by its presence. 

Having the opportunity to partake in Robot Heart's Residency in Oakland, California, was a true delight. 

The four-hour set I performed stands out as one of my favorites in recent memory, largely due to the unparalleled connection forged with the audience. 

Beginning the night and carrying through to the peak hours before passing the decks to Sante Vie, the energy was phenomenal to say the least. 

I hope that you find as much joy and resonance in this performance as I did that night

I was thinking about all the long waits in line for Burning Man tickets over the years and decided to give some of you something to listen to while the walking person icon slowly makes its way across the screen holding all our hopes in its little tiny pixel hands. 

The wait time  is usually about as long as it took to get from one side of the playa to the other last year after it rained and the playa shrimp rose up to attempt to take over the world!! 

Burning Mud. Mudding man. Raining man. Remember the wild stories (all from the outside media or Diplo and Chris Rock) vs the kindness and generosity of strangers out on the playa. I hope, even if faced with adversity last year, maybe, just maybe, you also saw how wonderful people can be when called upon in a ‘crisis’. 

I was lucky enough to stay until Tuesday night and grateful to still get to play a sunrise on the Robot Heart albeit a few days later than planned. There was so much love in the air that (finally) beautiful morning. If you missed it or want to listen once more or are just bored and looking for something to distract you while waiting in line for this years tickets (I’ll be waiting too) then here’s burning man/mud/magic 2023.  Feel the love in the air and the tickle of playa shrimp on the soles of your feet.
