Nyctophilia – a preference for the night or darkness; an ironic title for a tune so lush and light on its feet.  Sure, the bass is as dense as the Bavarian forest, with an über-stereo grind that circles relentlessly like our own personal mini-Hindenburg but it’s the beautiful licks of the Japanese Koto that take centre-stage here. Latitude weaves a haunting, ethereal atmosphere from psychedelic stabs and cranial melodic elements.  A crisply-imagined drum beat moves the experience forward at its own pace through an underground cave system, many miles from civilisation.

Prime Number picks up the pace a little with a busier rhythm section whilst retaining this release’s laid-back feel with a thoughtful, cerebral vibe.

Exploring the darker, more atmospheric side of Drum & Bass, Xanadu soon caught the attention of one of the scenes greats, when Ant TC1 chose his track ‘Abstrakt’ as the winner of Outlook Festival’s producer competition in 2012.

Early support for Xanadu's tracks (such as 'Ventricle') came from a number of highly esteemed artists and DJ's including Mefjus, Fourward, June Miller and Kasra, but the ball really started rolling when he met the legendary Dom & Roland.

Dom invited him to release his first record on D&R Productions, the first original solo work (other than Dom's own) to be signed to the imprint. "Through The Oort Clouds" was the debut release, a full length LP which came out in January 2015

Xanadu currently has more music forthcoming on Dom & Roland Productions which we should see later this year.

Too Much is one of those core, quintessential things that every DnB DJ needs in their arsenal – a dirty roller!  A relentlessly pulsing, throbbing bassline driven by a weighty, running drum beat, simply designed to shift the dance up a gear.  Why won’t my damn feet stay still?

Involved with electronic music since the mid 90s, Cambridge duo http://soundcloud.com/none-decay have behind them a rich tapestry of studio and DJ experience in drum & bass, hip-hop and beyond.  They made their AutomAte debut on Depth of Vision EP Vol.2.  Rising quickly through the ranks, their first full-length artist EP on the imprint garnered attention from high-ranking drum & bass officials such as Goldie and Ulterior Motive.

This, their second solo artist EP for AutomAte, is a diverse quiver of vibes.  Opening track Ribs sets the scene with a relaxed, classic break, warm sub and floating, spacious synth.  Next comes Mano Dura, on which label boss Deficit’s tightly-coiled, ever-switching drums are combined with a trademark None Decay alien bassline to form a tough, aggressive weapon aimed at the harder floors.

Next up, Low Lights truly embodies the None Decay spirit – laid back, slightly tongue-in-cheek but nonetheless perfectly executed with accomplished delegate of lyrical culture Inja effortlessly delivering the goods on the mic.  Finally, things take a turn toward the shadows with the dark, grumpy Last Of Us.

The Depth Of Vision EP series has thus far offered an incisive look through the http://soundcloud.com/automate-dnb vaults at some of their exceptional breakthrough artists.  This latest chapter aims to showcase two sides of a stylistic coin, placing old-school vibe-led pieces directly alongside punchy modern productions, demonstrating that it takes all sorts to feed a healthy scene.

http://soundcloud.com/phonograph opens the EP with New Horizon: a thoroughly modern, hard-hitting, swaggering masterclass in groove and grunt.  The killer combination of funk and weight will win this track a place in many a record bag.

http://soundcloud.com/ewokdj may not have been seen in public since AM8E006 but has been working solidly with the AutomAte crew behind the scenes.  Heavy Armour delivers a compatible vibe with his previous solo efforts for the label, rescued from deep in the techy, dark traditions of old school DnB.

http://soundcloud.com/sl8r-dnb ’s offering Conflict is a more contemporary, head-nodding, foot-tapping groove.  Equally at home on the headphones or in the dance, there is a spring in its step that belies its simplicity.

Hungarian newcomer http://soundcloud.com/them3chanikal draws this chapter to a close with a light & energetic techy roller.  Back Of Beyond offers plenty of pace and, rather than an ending, leaves the series feeling wide open for the next instalment.

Raiden & Agman Gora - AutomAte Halloween 2015 (Live @ Black Swan, Bristol)

‘The Frog' unites Fuj & Cirrus for a snapping, driving underground anthem which lets you know exactly what these artists are about. Lumbering but never once losing impact, it's littered with nastily distorted LFO and grinding beat patterns. Not for the faint hearted, Fuj & Cirrus don't disappoint. Cirrus comes next with ‘Ether', again bringing the edgier, grunting sounds present throughout its predecessor, while utilising vocal samples to take you through the drops. The pace is then increased, switching between layers and giving no hope of pulling yourself out of its construction line of snipping drums and lasers.

Fuj offers up next, with climatic, quaking sub bass and smashing kick throughout ‘Gun of a Son'. Its percussion and crashing breaks are intimidating, killing any commercial vibes in the vicinity. Rounding off the EP is ‘Aphotic Zone'; Cirrus jumps on remix duties for Fuj this time, once again integrating their production might and creating a towering concoction of creepy atmospherics and wavering voice notes.

Fuj and Cirrus are not to be underestimated. Between them they're invading the underground and moving towards the big leagues.

Deficit - AutomAte Halloween 2015 (Live @ Black Swan)

Amoss, a producer/DJ duo from Herefordshire, England. Having met in High School, James and Andy wrote and performed music in bands before discovering electronic music, specifically Drum &amp; Bass. 

With their debut release 'Glurg monster' in 2010 on Cyclone Recordings the duo jumped onto the scene in style. Since then they have now moved up the ranks releasing on Renegade Hardware with their track 'Flex' on the Inception EP and most recently teaming up with the Horsemen on the Horsementality LP. They are currently the driving force towards Kent based label Horizons Music with whom they have already released 2 singles and their highly acclaimed 'The Spectrum EP' with many more waiting in the wings for 2012.

Taking inspiration from across the board of Drum &amp; Bass, their style varies through gritty, hard hitting beats and distorted basslines to deep, technical and experimental sound design.

Next comes 12 Monkeys, a rolling head-nodder that takes us all back to before neuro was neuro.  Next up, Playing features a beautifully close, intimate vocal performance from Hazy Jane, backed with stripped-back beats and ominous vibe. M-Set steps once more unto the breach with a double-sided single that reaffirms his place on the label roster. 

Both ‘Capital’ and ‘Come Nah’ are equally as incisive as his previous work, yet show a different side.  A man of few words, M-Set lets his production do the talking.  ‘Capital’ begins with an introduction that gradually pulls us into a weighty drop, then down through a bassline anchored with an almost impossibly low tone. Each pad and embellishment floats effortlessly into the next, while stabs and slices add a gritty element to the atmosphere. Rolling break layers carry you into the core and we gradually succumb to the lazy rhythm. ‘Capital’ is a cut that could easily place itself in the choppier waters of late-night sets, a primary reason why M-Set material is a sought after addition for any DJ or club space.

The reverse, ‘Come Nah’, is just as dynamic in its motions, featuring the trademark keys that help unlock a musicality and a jazzy undertone which counteracts its heavier elements. M-Set proves that his capability as an artist doesn’t just stretch to the punchier rolling tracks, he is able to conjure a wide spectrum of versatility. Whether it’s the laid back intensity of ‘Capital’ or the relentless breaks and sonic hooks of ‘Come Nah’, M-Set continues to push his boundaries and remains at the head of the game.
