Taking two of the most tireless acts away from their passports has yielded an album and stage show fit to clobber any unsuspecting rap lover. Fresh Kils is a "producer/DJ/sample magician…involved with two of the 5 most written about rap albums in Canada", according to Allya Kanani at Imprint Show Review. PremRock is no slouch either: "The hirsute and hooded rapper casts himself in a very short but worthy lineage…of rhymers artfully influenced by Aesop Rock" says Jeff Weiss of Pitchfork/LA Weekly. 

Thousands of words have been spilled on the technical prowess of Toronto producer Fresh Kils and his assault on the MPC, while New York emcee PremRock has written thousands more crisscrossing the globe studying Tom Waits and Ernest Hemingway. After three tours, countless studio sessions in Toronto, and numerous jaunts spiked by booze in back alley shakedowns, PremRock and Fresh Kils have officially linked up on record and on the road to milk their notoriety for all it's worth. 

PremRock is fresh off of his one-two punch of A Clean Well Lighted Place LP and Who Art in Nada EP, and Fresh Kils needed a challenge after winning the producer championship at both Toronto's Sound Battle Royale and the Bangerz Beat Battle. Together, they own every inch of accomplishment on the indie rap circuit, from freestyle battles to MPC beatdowns, sharing stages with giants like Nas, Ice Cube, and Rakim, and lassoing in Homeboy Sandman, Moka Only, El Da Sensei & C Rayz-Walz on the duo's first joint album, due in late September. 

The album PremRock & FreshKils is an instrument of flavorful angst, born from a partnership of two vagabonds born to bless stages but remain steely eyed to getting paid in "props". With a nod to Check Your Head-era Beastie Boys, PremRock finesses smooth breaks of all shapes with New York straight talk. PremRock stirs up lessons from De La Soul's Stakes is High twenty years later: we're still being eaten alive by our indulgences. As a bartender from and stalwart of the independent New York indie rap scene, PremRock is trusted by anyone looking for a good Old Fashioned or a frenetic live show that's kept him on the road for half a decade straight. As Impose Magazine described him, he's a "bar stool scholar" and the new album is his master thesis on keeping your edge when the sensibilities of your craft change on a dime. 

FreshKils answers the most important question for any rap album: "Are the beats banging?" You goddamn right. FreshKils blends the unquantized mastery of Slum Village-era J Dilla with the bounce of El-P's crowd roaring Run the Jewels production. This is boom bap for modernists - keep it warm, keep the heads nodding, keep it mean, clean, and chock full of thump. He tones down his Warlord of the Battle on the MPC and gives PremRock enough space and melody to clear the decks. Knowing restraint is the true mark of a master, and on this album FreshKils segues deftly into his new role as Instrumentalist first, Head Stomping Beat Battler second.

These guys got the right fix for the wrong crowd: the glimmering girls of the road, the rough-living mopes in the Northeast corridor, the purists who call bullshit, the big shots with short memories, The album is cool and magisterial, the live show is pumped full of surging blood.
