After hitting a police officer who tried to hurt her adopted son, Grushe runs to the mountains. She arrives at a tottering bridge and just when all hope seems lost - a group of women from the nearby village help her cross to the other side and - once she's safe - tear down the bridge behind her.

Grushe's lover, Simone, is going to war. As they say their goodbyes he comforts her: "It'll only be a few days before I'm back and we can marry", but she knows it could take longer, or worse... as he disappears into the distance, she calls after him, and promises: "I will be waiting under the willow tree. Until you return. And if you don't... I'll keep waiting"

As Grushe was standing between courtyard and gate, she heard (or thought she'd heard) a low voice calling: The Child called to her! Not whining, but calling quite sensibly (or so it seemed to her). "Woman," it said, "help me." And it went on, not whining, but saying quite sensibly: "Know, woman, they who walk away and hear not a cry for help, but pass by with troubled ears will never hear the gentle call of a lover nor the blackbird at dawn, nor the happy sigh of the tired grape-picker as the Angelus rings." And she rose, and bent down and, sighing, took the child and carried it away. As if it was stolen goods she picked it up. As if she was a thief she crept away. The play, set in 1974 London, tells the story of three musicians and their manager, who shut themselves down in a derelict recording studio in order to record a country-rock album overnight, unaware that strange chemicals in the walls are driving them to the brink of insanity. As artistic and social tensions flare, music becomes mayhem and Everglade Studio demands its pound of flesh.
