Sean Keating – Amplified Bio Take 2 (written by Neil Jordan)

It has been over two decades since Sean asked me to write the liner notes for his 2001 CD release, “Touch The Sky”. Sean had already established himself as a DJ to watch out for, thanks to his first residency at Halifax’s top club night at the time, Baseline @ Reflections. Back then, a friend of mine described hearing Sean DJ for the first time as “it’s Trance, but funky!”. At the time, Sean was playing music with a bit of a different sound for Halifax and Atlantic Canada. While most DJs and electronic music lovers were focusing on sounds coming out of the US, Sean was focusing on the sound of the “Global Underground” that DJs like Sasha & John Digweed were making famous. Sean had fallen instantly in love with those two the moment he heard their “Northern Exposure” compilation and wanted to share that love with listeners in Halifax and beyond.

Since 2001, Sean has held residencies with some of the most respected promoters and clubs in the region,including Massive Productions as well as Underdog Productions thanks to his reputation as one of the most professional and consistent performers around. He started his long-running mix series, “Chilling Moments” early in 2003, which continues to this day. He has played some of the biggest local shows and played alongside some of the world’s biggest DJs, including Deep Dish, Danny Howells, Luke Fair, Armin Van Buuren and many, many more, all the while inspiring a new breed of budding local DJs.

During the summer of 2003, Sean was given the chance to play alongside his all-time favourite DJ, Sasha. The night started off at The Attic, but it continued on from there ending up at a local afterhours spot where Sean once again took to the decks and played a brand new Dean Coleman remix of Coldplay’s “Clocks” that caused Sasha to immediately drop his drink on the floor to run over to join Sean behind the decks, where they continued to tag back and forth for the next 2-3 hours in front of an extremely intimate crowd of 50 lucky locals. If you were there, you’ll know it was a moment in time.  

Sean’s relationship with his heroes, Sasha & John Digweed, took another step forward in 2011 when Sean decided to enter John Digweed & Beatport’s “Structures II” mix contest on a bit of a whim. Having never entered a mix contest before (or since) and being up against a very long list of international entries including professional touring DJs, Sean set his expectations low, only to be judged by a highly respected panel as the winner and have his music featured on John’s highly-respected weekly broadcast, “Transitions”.

While Sean’s performances have slowed down greatly in recent years, his love for the music has done anything but, and his long journey continues with this mix for the newly formed Atlantic Melodic & Progressive (AMP) group. It is the Sean Keating you’ve always known: immaculate programming backed up by flawless execution in a mix that sounds just as good in your headphones while working from home as it would if you were on the dancefloor, with the maestro painstakingly going through every track to make sure it fits just right. I have known the guy for over 20 years now. I’ve heard him in his basement, at house parties, at afterhours establishments and clubs of all sizes and I have yet to hear one dropped beat. This “Amplified” mix is the next brick in the legacy Sean has been building as, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the best DJs Nova Scotia has ever produced.

AIM 001 2022-01-26

The second installment in the Amplified series comes from label head, Aviatrix. A long time connoisseur of electronic music, she entered the scene as a dabbling producer before switching over to a set of turntables and a mixer, then quickly again to the initial digital interface when the first online-only specialty record stores appeared in the early 2000's. 

The music that soon became all-encompassing was the faster drums with the beautiful and haunting melodies of progressive and tech trance. Many a night would be spent trawling the releases of the day, or week, looking for just that particular hidden gem, no matter the time or effort. Now, we bring you her latest mix of a carefully curated selection of just such fantastic tracks, showing a gorgeous juxtaposition between the allegory of light and dark.  As usual, you can expect rolling basslines, strong kicks and always those high hats.

Elicia Martin is a DJ and vocalist based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Dark haunting basslines paired with hypnotizing vocals are the essence of an Elicia Martin set.

Elicia has been a singer her whole life, through grade school she entered and won talent competitions. She was introduced to electronic music in the summer of 2015 at an after hours club in Montreal where she danced till midday. Ever since she's been addicted to Progressive and Techno basslines that can make you get lost on the dancefloor for hours.

Jody grew up in Cape Breton, and soon plans to move back there with his family. He became a regular of the emerging Halifax dance scene around '96, when trance and progressive were the most popular sounds in the world, and which he has been happy to re-explore through this mix for us.

Jody was also a founding member of the Deep Red Collective, behind such venues as the legendary Club Red and then Sub Rosa Afterhours. He's played our Future Forest and Classics summer festivals, but he took his time before stepping behind the ones and twos, waiting a dozen years or so from starting out in the Halifax scene. 

He began playing techno and tech house among a group of Edmonton friends in the mid 00's, becoming intimately involved in the house music scene there before moving back to Halifax to be closer to his two daughters (both lovely singers themselves). He has now reunited with many locals and old friends, as well as met many new faces.

AIM 008 Aviatrix Live @ Future Forest Nest Stage 2022-08-06 945-1100

For this month I'm incredibly proud and honoured to present one of the originators of the Halifax rave and club scene, none other than Nick Nonsense himself. Here are some words he wrote about the mix below. 

There was a time when a lot of the music I played was a trance or ambient style of electronic music. It was a time when I had yet to find my own signature style and when the subgenres of electronic music were less defined as they are today. I still enjoy those records that fit into that sweet spot where you might imagine a bunch of different DJs liking it enough to chart it. I’ve tried to compile and mix a bunch for them for this AMP mix, my first for the series. It’s a soup of techno, minimal, stuff the online record stores calls Deep House (but I don’t), bubbly acid, spacey house, electro/breaks, and a couple of big room tracks. 

Aviatrix is building something special here that I truly respect in both vision and substance, and I really wanted to contribute something. So I stepped out of my normal format of just house or techno and went looking for deeper cuts in a progressive or dark ambient style. Since I often pick the tracks in that style by artists or from labels not known for that sound, I like to think my mix sounds a little different from the others in the series while still capturing the flavour. This mix features my new found love for the Boston-based minimal label Little Helpers, the most recent work in the progressive vein of well-known house music producer Kevin Yost, a couple of really old classics that are hard to pigeonhole, and a few of my favourite progressive artists like Dusky and James Dexter. Ultimately aren’t we all just trying to do a good impression of Sean Keating anyway? I know I am.

Ryskie (RYE-SKI) began producing and mixing in 1999 using very unconventional methods and a unique layout of gear. His style and sound choice has changed many times, but his passion for the music and for the rave culture has stayed the same. After his first official release (Mind Infection - Mekka Warrior Records) skyrocketed to #1 on mp3.com and likewize on the Australian mp3.com.au in 2003, he has continued to have constant international support from DJs and producers alike.

Being best known for his versatility, he has done shows ranging from top40 superclub vibe to underground afterhours warehouse parties. Never being afraid to attempt any genre, it is rare that there is a venue or crowd that does not simply fall under his control as he takes them on a journey of which few have the power to do.

The best advice he can give about keeping up in the vicious and competitive music industry is to "Keep true to yourself, and do it not just for yourself, but for everyone. Because anybody can learn the ropes, and make a big splash, but if you just do it to make yourself feel good, or because you think it's the cool thing to do, you will fade away and fall behind. Only the strong, and true, will survive in this for the long haul."

June's Amplified mix comes from our very own Sean Keating.

A fixture on the East Coast electronic music scene for two decades, Sean has earned the respect of electronic music lovers, DJs and promoters all over with his intelligent and smooth blend of organic and progressive house.

A true technical perfectionist who combines outstanding programming skills with near flawless execution Sean has earned himself the reputation as one of the most consistent performers around. His professional approach and his ability to adapt to different atmospheres has provided him with many memorable experiences throughout the years having shared the stage with some of the biggest DJs in the world including Armin Van Buuren, Deep Dish, Danny Howells, Luke Fair, Sultan and Steve Porter to name just a few. In 2003 Sean was lucky enough to play alongside one of the DJs most responsible for his love for electronic music and progressive house specifically when he was asked to open for Sasha.
More recently in 2011 Sean provided the winning mix in John Digweed's "Structures Two" International mix contest and was featured on Digweed's highly acclaimed radio show "Transitions". An accomplishment that even the most seasoned international DJ aspires to.

While Sean's live performances have become increasingly rare in recent years, he is still regularly releasing new editions of his long running mix series "Chilling Moments" which is currently celebrating its 20th year!

Future Forest is an outdoor camping arts festival with a focus on electronic music. The festival originated in 2012 as a fundraiser for a friend and accomplished DJ, Jay Hamilton, who was diagnosed with cancer. Future Forest proudly embraces the perspective that there are no spectators at the event but rather participants who in some way contribute to the overall experience. Now in its ninth year of operation.

Located in the middle of a forest beside a river, far from any houses, Future Forest immerses its guests into the wilderness located just 30 minutes outside of Fredericton, New Brunswick. The festival features three unique stages that are built using the natural resources the forest provides. The tall trees and beautiful landscapes are utilized for stage construction.

Greg Elliott has been DJing for a hobby since 2002, just a few years after falling in love with the progressive sounds of that era, idolizing DJs like Sasha and John Digweed, along with other DJs discovered though the Global Underground mix series.  During the height of the COVID pandemic, he decided to get more serious about it, and took online classes at Tim Penner's True Peak Sound School, and in February of 2021, started posting 
three hour mixes monthly to SoundCloud.  In March of 2022, he decided to start streaming on Twitch, and now tries to maintain a regular livestream schedule despite his day job as an electrical engineer.

From a young age, he embarked on a thrilling journey of exploring electronic music, driven by a deep-seated curiosity. With an impressive 14 years of experience, DJ DartFrog has mastered an extensive range of genres including House and Tech House, to Melodic House and Techno, and even hardcore.

His passion for music has resulted in the creation of 80 remarkable tracks under "dj dushine," available on widely recognized platforms such as Spotify, Apple music, and Beatport. Renowned for his skillful tribal drums, uplifting melodies, and heavy and dirty  basslines, DJ DartFrog consistently delivers a unique and captivating musical experience, serving as a testament to his unwavering dedication and artistic growth.
Building upon his versatile talent, DJ DartFrog continues to evolve and expand his already impressive skill set. Three years of private piano lessons have allowed him to cultivate a distinctive style and approach to music that sets him apart from the rest. Tāndāv Musicā, the brainchild of Halifax's own DJ Jay Vyas, emerges from the picturesque landscape of Nova Scotia, Canada. July's guest mix comes from another long time veteran of the scene returning for their second time to Amplified as well - DMFA (David Anthony).  

One of the original promoters hosting all night events in the town of Moncton, DMFA has been there during all the major milestones of our local rave history, and has had the opportunity to play alongside some of the greatest djs to come to town when large warehouse raves were a common occurrence in the Maritimes - back in the 90's and early 00's. With so much time invested in the scene, expect something truly magical for this month's episode of Amplfied.

November's Amplified mix comes from Saul Goode. A happy hardcore dj by passion, Saul got his start at the turn of the millennium. Known for rocking the dancefloor from either side of the decks, Saul is all about the good time party vibe. Hard beats and euphoric melodies (no matter what bpm) are the order of the day when Saul steps up to the decks. Bringing together a blend of styles most people wouldn't expect, Saul's sets never disappoint and are sure to leave the crowd out of breath and still begging for more.
