'Doolska' is an amalgamation of Polska (Poland) and Mrs. Dulska, the infamous character from the 20th century Polish play by Gabriela Zapolska, ‘Moralność Pani Dulskiej’ (The Morality of Mrs. Dulska). The EP is a protest to Poland’s religious hypocrisy and often negative treatment of the LGBTQ+ community, action for which Avtomat has been attacked, denigrated, and even locked up for. Released on Friday 17th September, this is a UK first from Avtomat.

One of Warsaw’s foremost LGBTQ+ music makers, and a stalwart of its scene, Avtomat, has released his first EP with 51-53 the queer-focused label that launched in early 2020.

‘Dzwoni Doopsko’ translates to ‘The Ass is Ringing’ with the EP a protest to Poland’s religious hypocrisy and often negative treatment of the LGBTQ+ community, action for which Avtomat has been attacked, denigrated and even locked up for.

“This EP is, again, a bit of a concept - I zoomed out the picture of what it means to be any kind of different in Poland and tried to compress it into this one, emblematic character, symbolising all the bigotry, hatred and sloppiness of the Polish right-wing, perpetuated by their hypocrisy and need to police everybody according to their own beliefs”.

"There is a humanitarian crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border. Since early August hundreds of people seeking international protection, coming from the Middle East, South Asia, and northern and middle Africa are crossing the external European Union border. Polish border troops are facilitating a process which is both nationally and internationally recognized as illegal, the so-called pushbacks. This brutal practice pushes the refugees from Polish territory back under the gunpoint of Belarusian border patrol who then use the same tactic and push the people back onto the Polish side. Consequently, the exhausted migrants are repeatedly chased away from one side to the other. Polish border patrol keeps ignoring the refugees’ repeated declarations telling them that they want to seek international protection in Poland. It breaches the law, according to which the border patrol should accept the application for protection and start adequate procedures and not keep these people outdoors for weeks. The temperatures in Eastern Poland are dropping day by day, which will cause more deaths by hypothermia, starvation, and exhaustion. On 19th September Polish border troops found the bodies of three people who had died of hypothermia. On the same day, the Belarusian authorities informed about the death of a woman who died in the company of her three children. On 24 September Polish authorities informed about another death, of a man from Iraq.

Polish organizations supporting foreigners have been involved in aiding the people on the border from the very beginning of the current crisis. They were communicating with them over loudspeakers while the border troops were not allowing for any humanitarian or medical aid to reach the refugees, denying them even food or freshwater. On 3 September the Polish government decided to implement a state of emergency in the cross-border areas, which has not been done since 1981 when martial law was introduced in Poland. What it means in practice is a drastic clampdown on the aid organizations and their access to the cross-border areas as well as fewer journalists who could document the situation on-site. The people on the border have been left without any help from the outside. No one controls the actions of the authorities anymore.

The situation at the Polish border breaks our hearts. We strongly disagree with the racist politics of the Polish government which leads to the deaths of innocent people, who are seeking refuge and a chance for a better life in the European Union. As Oramics, we want to support Fundacja Ocalenie (Rescue Foundation) who has been helping the migrants on the front line since day one and they facilitate easier access to a new life in an unknown country.

We have collected music from Polish and international artists and all the proceeds from the sales of the tracks will be given to Rescue Foundation."

This track was created by Avtomat especially for the compilation. Its lyrics reference the "Our father" prayer ("our daily bread") and the religious hypocrisy of the Polish government, who are ostentatiously Catholic, but fail to help starving and freezing people on the border and even actively bar anyone from helping them, engaging in illegal pushbacks.

AVTOMAT @avtomatmusic is an openly queer composer, producer, DJ and vocalist, visual artist, member of the Oramics and Ciężki Brokat crews, co-creator of Radio Kapitał, Polish ambassador for Keychange.
	His music has morphed several times throughout the last 10 years – from purely synthetic timbres and polyphonic singing with Pleśni 
to a perplexing fusion of rhythmically and sonically jagged compositions, bass-heavy club tracks on his latest EPs, “Gusła (Human Rites)” and limited vinyl release on London-based 51-53 Records, "Doolska". 
  He also remixed tracks by Kamp and Baasch,  composed and created live music for several theatre plays.
 In the club his fifteen-year experience of supporting queer, anti-fascist and underground scene results in an selection of the most forward-thinking sound offered by today’s scene. In his series of DJ-sets and club nights he blends unusual rhythmic patterns kicked up a notch with his improvised vocals.

Pleśni to nowy projekt i nadchodzący album muzyka, wokalisty i producenta Kajetana Łukomskiego, grającego pod nazwą Avtomat. Do współpracy przy najnowszym albumie zaprosił wokalistki śpiewające białym głosem (m.in. wokalistkę śpiewającą od dwudziestu lat w zespole Werchowyna). Pleśni łączą ukraińskie, rosyjskie, syberyjskie i gruzińskie pieśni wielogłosowe z nowoczesnymi, basowymi podkładami elektronicznymi, które wprowadzają te, często zapomniane, ludowe kompozycje w obszar zainteresowań młodych ludzi.
Projekt przypomina człowiekowi, skąd się wywodzi – nie z geometrii, symetrii i matematyki, a z pleśni, prehistorycznej zupy, chaosu i biologicznej gęstwiny. Dzięki niemu bardziej możliwe wydaje się połączenie dzisiejszego, technologicznego życia rodem z miastosfery z bardzo pierwotnymi środkami wyrazu, które grają gdzieś głęboko w każdym z nas.
Koncerty projektu Pleśni składają się zarówno ze śpiewów a capella jak i elektronicznych rytmów inspirowanych IDM, UK-dubstepem, future bass, itp.

TELEDYSK
Teledysk do opartego na ukraińskiej pieśni ludowej utworu Iszoł Brat został stworzony głównie dzięki crowdsourcingowi i chęci grupy ludzi do zrobienia czegoś wyjątkowego. Jego produkcji podjęła się niezależna grupa Black Oak Studio, przewodzona przez Aleksandrę Dermont i Martę Behling, która wraz z Kajetanem reżyserowała klip. Za niesamowite, pokazujące naturę często z niespodziewanej perspektywy zdjęcia odpowiedzialni są Tomasz Cedro (TMS Studio) i Rafał Smykowski (Essential Film), a montażem zajęła się Anna Jacobson (Black Oak Studio). Za zaskakujące kostiumy własnego projektu odpowiedzialna była Katarzyna Sikora. Klip został sfinansowany tylko i wyłącznie przez członków zespołu produkcyjnego.
Obraz do Iszoł Brat opowiada historię, która ma swoje korzenie w oryginalnym ukraińskim tekście piosenki. Dwójka zamaskowanych, uprawiających leśną mimikrę wędrowców, brat i siostra, przemierza organiczną gęstwinę w nieznanym celu. Podczas gdy on jest siłą napędową ich wędrówki, ona jest zdecydowanie bardziej wyczulona na podszepty intuicji i otaczającej ich biologicznej kipieli, która w pewnym momencie upomni się o nich ożywającymi prosto z mchu, ziemi i roślin postaciami. Gdy brat w końcu dostrzeże, że postawił przed siostrą zbyt trudne zadanie, może okazać się już za późno.

Pleśni (a Polish pun – pieśni is traditional songs, pleśni means molds) is the new project and an upcoming album from Kajetan Łukomski – a musician, vocalist and producer, whi has been playing for eight years under the moniker Avtomat. He has invited vocalists singing in the traditional white voice (open-throat singing) to work on the next release. Pleśni connects Ukrainian, Russian, Siberian and Georgian traditional singing with modern, sub-bass-driven electronic rhythms, which make this old, primal music that has been forgotten by many more accessible to young people and takes it into the future.
The project is devised to remind the humans where they come from – not from geometry, symmetry and mathematics, but from mold, prehistoric soup, chaos and biological thicket. Thanks to the unexpected clash of styles it seems to be able to connect the contemporary technological lifestyle born out of metropolitan areas with the more primal expressions, which dwell somewhere deep inside us.
The gigs of project Pleśni include both traditional, a capella singing and electronic rhythms inspired by IDM, UK-dubstep, future bass, etc.

THE VIDEOCLIP
The videoclip to Iszoł Brat, which is based on a traditional Ukrainian song, has been created mainly thatnks to crowdsourcing and the will to make something extraordinary. It’s production was coordinated and carried out by an independent film group Black Oak Studio, led by Aleksandra Dermont and Marta Behling, who also co-directed the video with Kajetan. The fantastic cinematography, frequently showing nature from unexpected points of view is the work of Tomasz Cedro (TMS Studio) and Rafał Smykowski (Essential Film), whereas it was edited together by Anna Jacobson (Black Oak Studio). The surprising and unreal costumes were designed especially for the video by Katarzyna Sikora. The videoclip has been financed independently.
It tells a story which has its roots in the original Ukrainian lyrics for Iszoł Brat. Two masked travellers, a brother and a sister, are traversing the forest’s deepest nooks in search of a destination unknown to s, exercising some sort of mimicry to blend in. While he is the driving force behind their journey, it is her, who is a lot more sensitive to the whispers of her own intuition and the surrounding biological mass. A mass, which will eventually come for them in the form of mysterious creatures rising directly from the moss, the soil and the plants. When the brother finally sees that the task he’d laid out in front of his sister is too much for her, it might already be too late.

For our "We Stand with Ukraine" benefit compilation, Polish queer artist @Avtomatmusic revisited an earlier project of reworking traditional Ukrainian folk songs and recorded vocals especially for the occasion.

This compilation came together as a solidarity effort between the eastbloc sound community and their international loose network of friends, allies and collaborators. 

We want to state again that our network has a zero-tolerance policy against all manifestations of racism, antisemitism, queerphobia, classism and other forms of discrimination.

While this is a benefit compilation for Ukraine, we want to express our solidarity with the people of Palestine, Syria and Yemen and all people who are currently victims of imperialist aggression.

Polirytmiczna struktura remiksu, który wysmażył Stendek sprawia, że w oryginalnej ścieżce wokali pojawia się niesamowita transakcentacja, podkreślająca pełen grozy charakter całego utworu. Więcej takich zabaw można znaleźć na jego znakomitym albumie „Touch”.

Remiks, za który odpowiedzialny jest weteran polskiej sceny deep house, Pysh, odchodzi nieco od bezpiecznej strefy producenta, który tym razem postawił na gorące rytmy inspirowane afrobeatem i porywające do tańca przeszkadzajki. Sam Pysh wydał właśnie w wytwórni legendarnego niemieckiego producenta Einmusik niesamowity długogrający album.

By emphasizing this artistic diversity, we constantly strive to keep it in the spirit of aesthetics developed in the groove series. As the title of the compilation indicates, it is all about creating a wide panorama of the possibilities for the label. 

Avtomat is one of the representatives of the Polish @oramicspl crew, which promotes women, LGBTQ+ and non-binary artists moving beyond heteronormative ideology. His A Mess is a grainy and vibrating construction surrounded by a layer of coldness.

Here's a ballroom track for the hard times for the LGBTQ+ community in Poland, featuring a conservative Polish MP, Krystyna Pawłowicz, commenting on how LGBT relationships are unproductive and the state cannot sanction them. LET'S VOGUE THROUGH IT TOGETHER!

The track is part of Total Solidarity, a charity compilation we've released with @oramicspl in cooperation with @psychicwarfare and Berlin's Uferlos Studios(mastering). I was also responsible for the artwork. Proceeds from the compilation go straight to LGBTQ organisations in smaller Polish cities, where homophobia, biphobia and transphobia are the hardest to endure. All proceeds from the digital sales will be sent directly to the ‘Foundation of the Free Woman in Rojava‘ (Weqfa Jina Azad A Rojava) which is one of the last women’s organization in the area.

Avtomat - Child Of Chernobyl

"Nieludzie (Ignorance Ha)" is an updated version of the 2019's track that featured on Oramics' Total Solidarity compilation. Now featuring Przemysław Czarnek's (the recently appointed minister of education) infamous dehumanising quote* about the LGBTQ+ community and human rights being drowned out by its doomy stabs. The track's distorted bass and slo-mo deconstruction of ballroom tropes sound even more ominous than ever.

the full sampled quote goes: "Let's defend ourselves from the LGBT ideology. We have to stop listening to this nonsense about some human rights or some equality. These people are not equal to normal people. End of story."

Avtomat - Nieludzie (Ignorance Ha)

Avtomat jest jednym z najważniejszych artystów queerowych w Polsce, producentem, DJ-em i wokalistą. Organizuje cykle imprez (m.in. Ciężki Brokat), należy też do prężnego kolektywu Oramics. „Gusła (Human Rites)” to jego pierwsze wydawnictwo od siedmiu lat. Premiera EP-ki 6 listopada nakładem Tańców.

EP-ka „Gusła (Human Rites)” powstała w okresie trudnym zarówno dla Avtomata, jak i każdej innej osoby queerowej w Polsce. Muzyka po części narodziła się w trakcie artystycznej rezydencji w Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej w Warszawie, gdzie kolektyw Oramics odprawił queerowy rytuał uzdrowienia. Artysta opisuje ją jako „kolektywny krzyk społeczności postawionej pod ścianą”. W czerwcu 2020, w przeddzień performansu, Avtomat został aresztowany protestując przeciwko bezprawnemu zatrzymaniu Margot Szutowicz z kolektywu Stop Bzdurom oraz narastającej opresji wobec społeczności LGBTQ+ w Polsce. 

Materiał składa się z czterech agresywnych, klubowych utworów. Ich korzeni można szukać m.in. w polirytmii i synkopach tańców takich jak oberek czy chodzony. Avtomat ma również smykałkę do domowych perkusjonaliów oraz przerabiania starych pieśni na wokalne drony i desperackie wrzaski. EP-kę otwiera tytułowy numer, w którym łoskot garnków i patelni ułożony jest w wirującą, ażurową strukturę. Pozwala to na pozostawienie przestrzeni w miksie dla wprowadzającego napięcie, gumowego groove'u, który ciągnie kawałek do przodu. Z kolei „Szeptucha (Hex Therapy)” to Avtomat gotowy do konfrontacji. Producent ściera ze sobą pełne dramaturgii dźgnięcia akordów, wycie wiedźm i metaliczne dźwięki, rzucając klątwę na osoby odpowiedzialne za codzienną przemoc wobec osób queer.

„Stop Bzdurom (The Bad Gays)” wydaje się być najbardziej wściekłym utworem na płycie. Kawałek dedykowany jest tytułowemu kolektywowi i jego walce z pseudoreligijnymi bzdurami głoszonymi przez podejrzane organizacje pro-life. Ciężarówki oklejone homofobicznymi hasłami jeżdżą po całej Polsce w obstawie policji, nie dziwi więc, że numer oparty jest na dźwięku rzężącego silnika. Inwazja dźwięków, krzyków, uderzeń i brzmień suki biłgorajskiej nawiązuje otwarcie do tej nierównej batalii.

Zamykający EP-kę kawałek „Nieludzie (Ignorance Ha)” jest zaktualizowaną wersją utworu ze składanki „Total Solidarity” wydanej przez Oramics w 2019 roku. Tym razem to nowy minister edukacji Przemysław Czarnek i jego dehumanizujący społeczność LGBTQ+ cytat zostają zagłuszone dźwiękami nadchodzącej zguby. Zniekształcony bas i powolna dekonstrukcja ballroomowej stylistyki brzmią teraz bardziej złowieszczo niż kiedykolwiek.

Stop Bzdurom (The Bad Gays) is dedicated to all the queer people fighting for their rights in Poland. The titulary collective, Stop Bzdurom, became known for their vivid reaction to the homophobic trucks roaming Polish cities (hence the roaring engines in the track). As far as I know just two days ago (on Halloween) they did a Samhain ritual to the sounds of this track. The Bad Gays is a humorous name I came up with sitting in a jail cell after my arrest in August to lift up the spirits of my cellmates, it refers to the fake Polish stereotype of a radical, gay hit squad financed by "the West".

Premiere: Avtomat 'Stop Bzdurom (The Bad Gays)'

For miles and miles the streets were filled with people, the roar of the crowd ringing loudly through the city. In their swathes they'd come together to fight for basic human rights; no matter the outcome their voices would be heard. Regardless of the obstacles they would have to contest with, they would never give up the fight.

Polish DJ, producer, activist and Ciężki Brokat and Oramics Member Avtomat inaugurates Polish label Tańce with Gusła (Human Rites), his first full release in seven years. An important figure in the country's queer scene, Avtomat cites the EP as a "scream of a community put up against the wall" with the four tracks representing a sonic response to the Polish government's inhumane views toward LGBTQIA+ people. Written during a turbulent time this year for both Avtomat and the queer scene, the abrasive tracks are informed by Polish folk polyrhythms and peppered with droning vocal manipulations.

Avtomat for Couleur3 (Swiss public radio)

A man with way too many interests – a composer, producer, DJ and vocalist, but also a graphic designer, typographer and 3D illustrator. Member of the Ciężki Brokat crew and Polish Keychange ambassador. His own music has morphed several times throughout the last 10 years – from purely synthetic timbres, through emotive polyphonic vocal compositions with band Pleśni, to a perplexing fusion of rhythmically and sonically jagged, bass-heavy club tracks on his 2020 EP, “Gusła (Human Rites)” and latest vinyl release on London-based 51-51 Records, 'Doolska'.
 
He was able to present his music during numerous festivals (Unsound, Tauron Nowa Muzyka, Audioriver, Ephemera) and an assortment of clubs. Between 2014 and 2016 he has been creating impromptu live music for an interactive theatre play The Method of National Constellations (I.e. during Modern Art Days in Białystok). The sensation of a never ending musical split has led him towards the more hybrid areas of electronic music, which he also dabbles in during his DJ-sets.
 
In the club his over ten-year experience of supporting queer, anti-fascist and underground scene, spinning turntables and using digital controllers results in an almost annoyingly disparate selection of the most forward-thinking sound offered by today’s scene. In his series of DJ-sets and club nights (Ciężki Brokat, W Mocy Nocy, the moody Dystopia) he blends unusual rhythmic patterns and futuristic sounds without forgetting the more humane qualities like melody and harmony, all kicked up a notch with his improvised vocals.
