Muskrat Math is an improvisatory piece performed entirely on a Eurorack modular synthesizer setup without a computer.  It gets its title from two of the most used modules in this piece:  the Muskrat “vile little wavetable drum”  and the Make Noise Maths.  Though it is an improvisatory piece, it has an arc to its structure.

Before Clocks Cease Their Chiming gets its title indirectly from the last lines of the poem “As I Walked Out One Evening” by W. H. Auden.  It features textures inspired by clocks (the ticking of clocks, its pendulums, springs, and mechanical features) and the chiming and resonances of bells.   A musical composition, like a clock, is a structure that when performed, measures the passing of time.   Like the clocks in the Auden poem that “whirr and chime”, in music we come to understand the fleeting nature of life and love and our efforts to suspend our belief in the decay of these things.  This piece was written for Duo Montagnard and received its world premier at the 2009 World Saxophone Congress in Bangkok, Thailand in July of 2009.

This is a mp3 version of a elctroacoustic piece for 2-channel playback.  

In my piece Encroachment, I explore the boundaries between the natural world and the man-made world.  Recently I moved to the wilds of Pennsylvania and I am constantly confronted (yet delighted) with wildlife and natural beauty.  Yet the presence of human beings is actually more apparent in these surroundings.  For instance, there is the road next door, the rock quarry down the street, 4-wheelers and motorcycles, and in the fall, lots of hunting.  In Encroachment, natural sounds are mixed with man-made sounds.  Especially important are the sounds of man-made boundaries (doors, roads, fences, buttons, etc. ) that demarcate the different areas of the piece.
