Joining them is Lady Blacktronikia, with her wealth of production experience, on remix duties. An innovative use of samples shines here amidst her driving rhythms and fierce atmosphere. Her sound is heavily influenced by the classic elements of old school Chicago & Detroit House -- drawing inspiration from youthful exploits in the Bay Area club scene of the 90s to her current success as part of Berlin’s thriving nightlife scene.

We're back with a new upload from the Local Underground Classics Series. This edition features an early house mix by DJ Dao. In the late 90's and early 2000's, Dao played a central role in the growth and cultivation of dance music in Reading, PA. He co-owned and operated Digital Movement Productions alongside Branson Bell and Brent Yocum (over various incarnations), and performed throughout the region as DJ Dao. 

Dao was and is a master craftsman in the art of the journey mix. His mixes tell a story. His mixes paint a picture.  In his mixes there is love and loss, tension and tumult. In his mixes there are tracks chosen with care.    

In the selection featured here, we find an artist seeing his tools and palette in a fresh way...as a means to storytelling. 

Since then, Dao has been telling stories in the Bay Area where he has resided for the last 20+ years.

"There Again and Here Now (2000 c.e.)

Do it! Set the DeLorean to December 2000 and tune into these funky feelings of hope, regret, love, and fear.

I had been spinning vinyl for only 3 years at the time. But, I had this desire to story tell through the mix’s lyrics. The arc of this mix is deeply influenced by Dubtribe Soundsystem’s style of lyrical journey, with the end lyrics resolving the opening. I had recently broken up with a beloved partner, I was young and stumbling through life as you do at 23 years old. I was no longer feeling moved by the Trance and Progressive I used to spin years’ previous, but I had a vinyl arsenal of slower House & Breaks I could finally mix confidently.

I needed to do some work. Cathartic and soulful work; and I did. I worked it all out in this mix. This was a pivotal point in my life going from merely spinning a sequence of tracks into striving for something … mmm, more meaningful.

Fallin' Over You

The tribute to DJ Spinbad continues with perhaps his most famous work. It's reportedly the most bootlegged mix of all time, so thought I might as well hop on board :D 

Spinbad's 1995 mixtape Rock The Casbah is frequently cited as THE defining moment in modern megamix/mash up culture, and with good reason. Featuring JS-One and A.Vee, according to the man himself this tribute to 80s pop was assembled on a 3-track (... a 4-track with a broken channel), and is simply put a technically brilliant, phenomenally imaginative and daring piece of mixtape history. To quote DJ Yoda's recent tribute, "Spinbad is one of the main reasons that I am a DJ. [He] was the first hip-hop mixtape DJ to leave the comfort zone of rap music. He showed me that music isn't something you need to be embarrassed about". 

To the mix then. I've only ever had a shortened version, but digging around there are a few variants commonly available, so this is a composite of the best quality remastered version I could find - blip-free, balanced and with the missing end stitched back in. I may revisit once I get a higher quality version of the post-Maneater section, but for now this will do just fine.
